What a talented man he was...one of very favorite singers from that era...i didn't know he was such a great impressionist...of course 'Mack the Knife' is one of the most unique, catchy tunes ever...plus...check out his rendition of 'If i were a carpenter'...very moving...he could blow you away with his vocal ability or take a song like that and interpret it perfectly...no frills..a straight to the heart performance...check it out....you'll see what i mean...he was one of a kind.one of the best.
Wow! He doesn't just do a person's voice and mannerisms (though he has those down perfectly). He changes his face to have a truly uncanny resemblance to the actors he impersonates. I noticed that he even changes the shape of his eyes for each person. Anyone who doesn't appreciate this hasn't seen much of the work of the actors he impersonates.
I've been ignorant of the talent of this man. I barely knew of him as a singer and had no idea of his other abilities. Might be because I wasn't born 'til '63. I'm amazed and inspired to search for more. There seems to be a dearth of multi-faceted talent today, not that they don't exist, just that they seem scarce. Nearly anybody can be a celebrity....some for the wrong reasons/actions. The same internet that makes those people also provided me with the ability to view this gem.
@mtdewchallenger This is so exciting to me! In searching for more Bobby, you'll find a brilliant singer and performer and a hugely talented actor -- in both comedies and drama (he was nominated for an Oscar for "Captain Newman M.D.").
And I absolutely agree that there no longer is this kind of celebrity -- for the most part -- today. So sad. But, at least we do have the ability to discover more and more classic stars today! :-D
Let's see, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Dean Martin, Hitchcock, Robert Mitchum...how many people DID he do in this thing?!? Anyway, it's TOTALLY BRILLIANT. And you know I'm not even a fangirl of Bobby.
i'm a huge bobby darin fan. i'm also a huge sammy davis jr fan. so i gotta ask, who did this act first? becuz sammy does this almost the exact same way
I'm not sure, I don't know too much about Sammy Davis Jr.
This particular act is from somewhere in 1960-62, I'm 99% certain of that! When did Sammy do his act?!
I do know that Bobby and Sammy both GREATLY admired each other! In fact, a telegram from Sammy is on the back of Bobby's album "That's All". AND, Sammy was once quoted saying that Bobby was "the only person I never wanted to follow".
WOW, this is a large reply! Haha!
If you find out who did it first, let me know! :-D
@ILoveRayMilland For a while, Bobby was Sammy's opening act, so they sort of borrowed from each other here and there. They don't discuss the impressions, but they do talk about that part of Bobby's career on his "This is Your Life" episode (on youtube, last I checked).
Great impressions! Another reason to love Bobby Darin. What a great and versatile performer. One of the all time greats, right up there with Dino, Frank and Sammy. The Curtain Falls too soon sometimes......
@sohooded Yes - there is footage of him on piano (you know he played piano on the record of Splish Splash). Midnight Special, Johnny Carson March 73 show, and his last TV show on April 27 73. What a surprise!
Must be stepford wives night out judging from the audience's reception

My heart broke a little when he (as Dean Martin) introduced his "ex-partner" Lewis. So glad they made up in the end!
