  • it s too fast....

  • One of the greatest records to come from SUN studio

  • Great track. Thanks 4 sharing. Just to clear up Carl and Luther Perkins were definately NOT related! Nice idea though.

  • GREAT!!!

  • wow dude whats that record worth?

  • Written by Johnny Cash. Great song. Great version.

  • Actually SOLD to Johnny Cash for all of $40.00, written by George Jones. I'll bet that George is STILL kicking himself over that, lol!

It sold more copies for Warren as his FIRST Sun record than Cash, Perkins or even Presley did on THEIR first Sun records, yet Sun records sadly never gave Warren the backing or publicity he so richly deserved.

  • Really? That's crazy. Johnny was gonna record the song but Sam Phillips told him he couldn't because it was too 'rock n roll'.

It is a good song regardless.

  • Dont know if thats true. This song has Johnny Cash's style of writing-the phrasing and choice of words are clearly his.

  • Nah, if you are familiar with George Jones' style it has JONES written all over it! The "Cash" style you might be thinking of is actually that of the late Luther Perkins

(Carl's brother) who died in that tragic home fire. Those terrific early Sun hits that Cash recorded featured Cash's LYRICS, which were VERY different than what you hear here. Perkins provided the wonderful music.

  • I am familiar with Jones' style and I still dont see the style of this song as Jones'. The tempo, feel and choice of words are more in line with Carl Perkin' s "All Mama's Children", written with Johnny Cash.

Luther Perkins was not related to Carl.

  • some good music at last thanks for posting this keep rocking cat

  • hey singingthe blues there is a " BEAR FAMILY" C D with all his Sun stuff + alternative takes, false starts and a risque joke told by the big man'' Great singer pity his ego and Sam p's ego clashed

  • Hey, by the way you start this player, must be a relative brand of Philips ?.

    Great classic and sound !

  • Smith's first love was country music. When his contract with Sun Records ended he moved to the west coast in 1959. I have an album titled, The First Country Collection of Warren Smith on Liberty Records . It was recorded in the early 60's.

  • You can find all of Warren Smith's Sun recordings on the CD "Uranium Rock" from Amazon (and probably elsewhere). I've got the CD and do two songs at my own performances: "Uranium Rock" and "I've Got Love If You Want It."

  • Ps. From what I've read, Smith's fortune's suffered because Jerry Lee Lewis was starting to make it big and Sun Studios put all their money behind him, leaving Warren Smith (also at Sun) out in the cold.

  • Likewise with Sonny Burgess.

  • That is absolutely true. I like Lewis. but I think it was a BIG mistake for Sam P. to do that!

  • great post

  • The greatest rock and roll song ever. This one is for you John Henry.

  • Erm ... you're basing that on what exactly?

  • Men, I don´t know this rockin' Warren Smith, he deserves to be reminded as one of the greatest rock and rollers...

  • Bliss.

  • Thank you so much for everything-- It is a breath of fresh air!!!

  • Thnx to you man!

    L.S.M.

  • Do you have the B-side to this?? (well, obviously you do, but can you put it up?). It's called "I'd Rather Be Safe Than Sorry" I think.

    Thanks

  • Got Warrens version of "Ubangi Stomp" ???? Please!!!

Great singer pity the ego got in the way

  • hey cat thanks for posting this truely groovy sound keep it rock n roll

  • hey thanks alot, I'll try to find the cd!!!!

  • Damn fine musician... didn't get nearly enough notice. His version of this song is by far my favorite of all the folks that tried to cover it. Also like a lot of his other one... thanks to Sun for keeping the music alive!

  • thanks man.rocks!

  • good tune! tryin to fine johnny cash's version

  • Rock 'N' Ruby by Johnny Cash is on the Lonesome In Black Album.

    I like this version better.

  • It's also on the newly reissued "Greatest! and Now Here's Johnny Cash" along with an early radio version of "Country Boy" and some alternate takes of "Train Of Love" and "Cry! Cry! Cry!"

  • Very pretty, of course.

  • Warren Smith is my cousin. I never thought his record would be on you tube. Small world. If the person that posted is kin let me cuz.

  • I have been hunting down the 45 of this for as long as I can remember and never even seen one. For a long time I doubted the mere existance of the 78, but this vid really opened the doors to my search. The only way of hearing this I had was a bootlegged tape that later got ate by my old tape player, but thanks for addig this, I have been wanting to hear this for a while.

  • One of the all time classics, of course....
