I admit I never used about that "cheat" on using the single key, but maybe that was my obsession on getting everything. Also, I used the hookshot on the boss rather than the bow. Same reach, no resource burn.
Oh, and to the other commenter "bast963", in the older version of this game, that chest DOES contains 20 rupees, rather than a bomb...And it was just as useless at that point as the bomb to me.
This specific dungeon had me stuck, as a little kid, for months because the pillar in the middle across the pit of that one room. I just could not understand what to do, and that I could even throw it there, until I did it randomly one day and collapsed the building.
The only thing that could be similar to it, is that it involves luck. Still, the boss key in Mermaid's Cave in Ages is probably just as infuriating as horse heads.
