Mariana Alves is a horrible umpire. She makes incorrect calls and sits on her chair with a blank face as if nothing was the matter. And Capriati said after the match that she's had calls go against her and she accepted it. Like hell, she is the biggest complainer of all the players.
And we all know there were not only 4 blown calls. There were more and when Capriati clearly shot her balls out it wasn't even called "out" the ball was still in the game.
Wow! this is too much, fucking umpires, fuck em. They are worthless and can´t do their job right. Nalbandian got screwed over biog time against Isner by the umpire. Umpires should be fined as well for bad officiating.
@DEBASUHR Me either. She has a terrible attitude a lot of the time but the officials must have had some bias against her in this match. Anyone can make a bad call (and bad calls *are* made every match) but THIS many, all against a particular player?
it doesn't matter. A player needs to keep their cool and play through the bad calls. It is one thing to dispute a call, but another to take your anger and frustration out on the chair.
@drifter01z lololol i dont know if you watched the whole willams capriati match but those calls were made at very crucial parts of the match after 4 missed calls sorry im not keeping my cool and no one would
@cooktash actually there was only one of those calls that was at a crucial part. It was the call that gave Capriati advantage on point the others were ended up 15 -15, 40-30, hardly crucial. There was one call that was really a blown call. It wasn't even close to being out. But this is hardly the first time line judges have been bad and it wasn't the last, but now with the new system, they have taken a lot of that eye judgement away from the linesman and chair.
@cooktash there have been so many players that have had bad calls on them and not lost control. And not just in tennis, but football, soccer, basketball, to name just a few, but not everyone is a great bbig baby. Refs and umps and linesman are human and subject to error, just like players are. Serena had her chances to win points through out that match and many times she failed. She let a couple of bad calls get to her and began to fall apart. She couldn't play through it. That's bad form.
@drifter01z obv you didnt see the match bc serena didnt breakdown she actually played very well but at crucial points they called bad calls.... and ofc cap took it to her full advantage and fought to win the next point, theres a right and theres a wrong in this situation in which the linesmen and the orbitor were wrong nothin right about it at all.... i cant even see where youre coming from its like youre trying to side with the bad calls lol but w/e i have my oppinion you have yours that simple
@drifter01z and she did her best to play through it but kept getting screwed we all know that and if you dont obv you didnt see the match or you just dislike serena all together
@cooktash obviously she didn't do her best. Before that match Capriati had never beaten Serena. I'm not siding with the blown calls. In fact I hate them just as much or more as the next person. I coached a few women's flag football teams and the refs really sucked. But, it wasn't like the bad calls came every single time. And I'm telling you again not all of those bad calls against Serena were at crucial moments. Yes they are frustrating, but like I said you have to raise your level even more.
@drifter01z Capriati had beaten Serena six times before this match, though Williams led the head to head. These are the worst calls I've ever seen in a pro tennis match, and I've seem many. Serena was so amiable in this match compared to 2010 and 11.She even said"What the heck?'' The memories of this match got to her years later.imo.
@1Rdby Thanks for correcting me on the stats there. The point I was trying to drive home was that Serena started the match blazing, but in the second set Capriati got her feet back under her and started to play better, and then a couple of bad calls, I think got to Serena. A couple of those calls were very close, but the one that was 4-5 inches in side the line was ridiculous. After that point Capriati started to outplay Serena. I rewatched the match, and saw Serena slowly begin to fall apart.
@simoncito7777 I "think" someone needs to go back to school and learn some proper English and some manners. An athelete is supposed to be an idol to those who look up to them. What do you think her young fans are going to think when they see her ranting and raving? She's acting like a psycho, so its okay if I blow my top too. No it isn't okay, you get paid millions to play a sport. You should be above all that act like a child stuff. Suck it up and get it next time.
@drifter01z ok firts my lenguaje is not english my friend i am not american sorry for not be american and i like serena because she not take shit of nobody and dont lie more u dont like serena u are fan of other shit of player like henin or maybe capriati..... and the last yes serena deserve everything she have because because she suffered much for his skin color, for this match she maybe won and the other players do not compare to her for that in my country only see women's tennis for williams
@simoncito7777 First off if you are going to even try to debate in English then you need to learn it. Inside out. You don't see me running around using bad spanish, or russian, or punjabi. Second, what in the world makes you think anyone deserves a break because of the color of thier skin. That is a racist statement. Everyone deserves an equal opportunity, period. Color shouldn't even be considered. And finally, any athelete in any sport should be held to high standards. Children are watching.
@drifter01zok first I am not a child 18 years and I have no need to see a boring game of tennis are all female and there are clear exceptions williams or sharapova the other not help women's tennis fame, no matter how is the caracter of williams in court is no doubt she is the one that gives women's tennis fame and without her women's tennis would be nothing today and many have retired and no matter, if u you like it or not Serena is clearly dominating the tennis btw serena not play to much
@simoncito7777 You clearly are deluded about what I am telling you. Children want to become tennis players because of Serena. They see her and look up to her as an idol. But, what does she do? She blows up at the slightest call against her. This match against Capriati, Serena wasn't playing her best and Capriati was. And once again when you have millions of people watching you including children.
@drifter01z please do not see the kind of world we live in we are not at the time of Sampras or margaret times change and serena as I said before do not take shit from anyone and do not think the excuse is good enough as you did with this match and bye dont try to make serena bad because she is the best player in the moment I'd rather see serena with character
I thought the umpire who just called the Stosur / Williams final (2011) was the same one as this one (in 2004).........they look a lot a like, but the one calling the match here in 2011 is a little bit hotter. Either way though, Serena got screwed in 2004, several times. If I were in the chair, I would have played a let due to the situation. I'm not a chair umpire (but rather a player), so I'm not sure about the rule exactly. I THINK (but not sure), the chair could award the point or play a let?
Serena has had some awful luck with calls but today Eva was 100% correct with the decision. You can not yell or make noise as a ball is heading toward an opponent. My only question would be did Sam have a play on the ball, tough to say. My guess probably not but Serena needed to wait to yell out.
@gbthecoach: I understand the decision. However, I have watched tennis players serve when the crowd is yelling and they serve through it. Stosur did not have a play on the ball - she missed the shot. Secondly, I have watched tennis for years and never, never, have I seen this called. Never.
@mariewilder Those were the problems I had. Samantha had no chance on the ball; it was a clear winner. As well, Serena is being called on obscure rules that don't get called on others.
To settle this on here once and for all. The chair in this match was Mariana Alves from Portugal. Today's chair looks quite like her but is Eva Asderaki from Greece. Yes the look close to the same but different women. Mariana paid the price for this match and worked at lower level events for a few years after.
Holy crap. I didn't know it was this bad. Unacceptable. No wonder Serena's always on the defensive with calls at the Open, whether they're right or not (see today v. Stosur)
I felt Serena's pain in this match. She could have won but the umpire (or whoever she's called) is blind.
There's no way an umpire needs to be suspended or whatever. They need to just be FIRED or not be hired period. If you can't see during one match, how are you going to be able to see in another.
I want to know what the credentials are to becoming an umpire... anybody know???
@winwon74 just shut the fuck up you luckisigil twin and stop staying mad because i expose the truth about flop rice. and this isn't even a fucking music video. you brat. now back off

THESE LINESMEN REALLY PISS ME OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They call it OUT when it's IN & say nothing when it's OUT.
They should just keep their mouth shout & let the players decide to challenge it.

@tranquille8888 Back then there was no challenge system. This match was the reason why it was introduced later.
