He should stick to Irish songs. This is an old Scottish song and needs to be sung by a Scot to convey the real emotion of a patriot. Listen to the version by North Sea Gas and you'll hear how it should be sung. There's no comparison. And why do you Irish keep singing our folk music anyway? We don't bother with yours after all. And please, don't give us that 'Celtic connection' nonsense. Celtic is just a meaningless generic term. We're no more Irish than the English are German. Cheers, anyway.
I used to go to Tommy Makem's Irish Pavilion in Manhattan to see Danny Doyle, one of the best live performers I have ever seen. When he did Killkelly Ireland there was not a dry eye in the house. Thank you for posting.
@TomChair -I love Danny! Did you read about his surgery and retirement from performing? Very sad, indeed. I met him a few times and corresponded through email. Wonderful and talented man! When did you see him in New York? Is Tommy Makem's Irish Pavilion still there?? Best Wishes
@TomChair I'm not surprised. Killkelly Ireland is such an amazing song... and how Danny sings it! I once gave the recording to a friend who listened to it on her way home from work. She told me the next day that she had to pull over and cry.
@chisaoboy - thanks! I discovered Danny in the late 80's. I've seen him a few times in concert and I communicated with him through his email. i don't think he is doing very well these days. I have all of his recordings since the early 80's. The pic are from Camden, Maine and that vicinity. Just beautiful. With St. Paddy's Day coming, I am full of nostalgia with this song.
@shambaby Sad tae hear that about Danny.......I stay near to the Tay, not heard this song before, but fell in love with Danny's version of "Step It Out Mary" an awesome song......
Thank you, He was my absolute favourite singer when I was a child. "Daisy a day" was my song, Gay Byrne played it for me on my birthday!
