I took my airbag out my car today, So you have the bag folded up inside the steering wheel, and behind the bag is a circular housing (sealed) with 4 little holes in the side, when the explosive is detonated via a crash...the explosive goes off, and lets out i'm guessing some kinda gas through the four little holes, therefore inflating the bag in front of it!
That ladies and gentleman is (my version) of how an airbag works!
@BlueRice id guess no because the only way to get that much air in that big of an area in 1/5 of a second would be to cause an explosion that blows the front of the bag forward (with holes in the back to suck in air as the front is being pulled forward)
so.. it would suck in water(not air) and not really help much at all IF it blew up

@dpstarcom i blew up an airbag under water like davidsfarm and i could feel it a little on the shore and there where people on the other side of the pond saying that they felt it in the water. lol but it was a 90s ford airbag.

@cosmas007 i am guessing that the only way to get that much air in that big of an area in 1/5 of a second would be to cause an explosion that blows the front of the bag forward (with holes in the back to suck in air as the front is being pushed forward) and the person mashes into it causing it to deflate quickly but not too fast (or youd just fly into the steering wheel)
@1245678987 They use rocket fuel and an igniter. They also put in baking powder so it doesn't light on fire. There are holes for fast deflation. The bag isn't even inflated for a whole second.
@cosmas007 I belive that there's a "button" on a certain part of the framwork of a car and when it is pushed an electric signal is sent to the airback where a small explosive fills up the air-bag like so.
@AdrianC12345 it works by the car stopping very quickly, i know because we hit a ditch but no damage was caused to the car but the airbags deployed - the car went from 30 - 0 in less that a second

@delahouzzzze it is already weakened in a cross-like creases. the plastic rips but remains attached to the steering wheel.
