Yes, a fabulous tribute by Tom Hanks, for one of the very top groups from the greatest era in Rock history - the '60s.
And Tom caught it just right - the JOY of the music and the time, right after JFK. He knew because he was there. Everyone listening who was there was BACK there, for a bit.
The first album I ever bought was one of their albums, in 1964. It was a treasure. And so was their music. And yes, Tom, it DOES still get everybody up dancing.
Really great until john cougar...or john mellenkamp or whatever the fuck he calls himself now. I just cannot stand that phony prick. Sorry to DC-5fans. I love the Dave Clark Five!
what took so long Hall of Shame? You put Rap Crap in Before The DC5..You are a fucking joke, what are you 13 and still in school? do you know or any of you know the history of RNR and the groups that influenced it?WHAT A FCKING JOKE.And why is GRAND FUNK that broke EVERY record ZEP had Not In?You people are BUTT WIPE and NOT respected .
Of all the inductions speeches I've heard from the RRHOF, Tom Hanks' was the TOPS!! It was great seeing the DC5 again, and of course I'm speaking of ALL of them because we all know in our hearts that Mike and Denis were definitely up there on that stage, too. The still-babelicious Joan Jett certainly did the group proud with her rendition of "Bits And Pieces" and with the rest of the entourage on "Glad All Over". An excellent way to cap of that year's R&R Hall Of Fame ceremony!
Wish Fogerty and Mellencamp would have spent some time learning the song...How about 'I'm feeling glad all over,YES I'm glad all over, baby I;m glad all over............
Fogerty grew up with this music and KNEW the lyrics, but Mellencamp was too young and never learned them. Mellancamp's voice was louder here so Fogerty went along with it on stage to help make it all work.....
DC5 had to be honored to have such an array of artists playing tribute to them. Joan Jett, John Fogerty, John Mellencamp & Billy Joel did such a fantastic job!
DC5 was one of my top 3 bands when I was a junior and senior in high school. They sang happy tunes and Smith's voice was fantastic. No one could ever replace him. Thanks for the great time and great memories, DC5! You were always members of the R&R Hall of Fame as far as I'm concerned!
The performances were great, but I still wish I could hear Mike Smith's fabulous voice singing those songs again-he was one of a kind and one of the very best singers in rock 'n' roll. No one can touch the special quality he had as a singer.
I'm so happy that DC5 got inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame...they truly deserve it! DC5 always had the greatest songs, and I remember when they were on the Ed Sullivan...such memories! Denis & Mike, we miss you.
This was one of the most poignant, special induction speeches ever. I am very glad that I was here for the 1960s and remember all of this fabulous music. Dave Clark Five were/are phenomenal.
The first rock concert I went to was Dave Clarke 5 in the 60s,the last John Fogerty 2007.DC5 where fantastic back then and John was just awesome last year.
Thanks for posting this. I saw the DC5 everytime they were on Ed Sullivan.Have several of their albums. Dave needs to release all of their albums on CD also would like to see DVD's. Dave, your fans need this to happen.
Chez004 you rule! Great Job! It was wonderful to witness this historic evening with Lenny, Rick, and Dave. Better late than never.... The boys look great. Dave spoke with great eloquence and dignity. Thank God for You Tube and the Net. Mike "Boomer" Smith, and Dennis Payton you are missed, and may God Rest Your Souls. DC-5 Forever! Perhaps Mr. Clark will release one more anthology, or DVD???
Hey Ba101; Really, the Staple Siingers made it; class of 1999! So why not Dave and the boys; as Dave said it wasn't meant to thought provoking, just damed good rock and roll!!
wonderful end to the show. I could have watched just the DC5, Tom, Joan and the group at the end and been perfectly happy. Tom hit all the right notes and brought back the pure happiness of seeing them again. They are all wonderful, and God bless Denny and Mike.
Thanks beyond thanks for posting this. DC5 was my favritie British Invasion band and I did get to see them twice. It was sad that Mike Smith and Denis Payton weren't a part of it and I think Dave paid them great homage with his speech. None of that 60's music will ever die and I am glad I got to see it unfold. I am just glad that Disco music wasn't connected with the 60's.
I'm listening to this & wondering what the strange offkey sound is permeating this performance. At 7:20 I go the answer. I'm sure the guy playing harmonica was there to honour Little Walter. But inviting him to sit in on this song was less than pleasant & distracted from those who were making an earnest attempt to show some reverence for the DC5. I suppose Paul Shaffer wouldn't notice if there was an elephant in the room either. The harmonica killed whatever Glad All Over feeling I had.
I wondered where those sour notes were coming from. Presumably, there will be an edited version at some point with that cut out.
The musicians should have done "Catch Us If You Can" but maybe were running out of time due to Madonna talking over and over and over and over and over again.
I was disappointed in the off sound of this finale as well. This is a great, fun, upbeat rocker of a song. Everyone singing it at the end of this production is appropriate, in my opinion -THE song that knocked the Beatles first #1 off that spot and all, the DC5 "signature song" probably.
Anyway, other than what was off here, it was a great presentation for the gread DC5!
I had the same strange quiver up my spine every time I heard that. I was looking for a goose on the stage, but finally saw the harmonica player. As the tune changes keys at one point he had the wrong harmonica for the new one. Sad.
Again, THANK YOU so much chez004 for posting this moment in music history. I was a fan from day 1 with the Dave Clark 5 and the British Invasion. You want to know WHY the DC5and their music is STILL with us today?.They had TALENT. They wrote great songs. They were Class acts and classy human beings. Thank YOU
Tom Hanks for being a wonderful human being and the perfect words. Dave Clark 5 FOREVER!
Dave Clark is why. For some reason, as owner of their complete back catalog, he hasn't allowed it to be made available. Don't know why. He also owns rights to all of the old Ready Steady Go shows from the 60's and hasn't allowed them to be made available on DVD.
Madonna DID NOT deserve to be there PERIOD! Joan Jett deserved it more. Mellancamp looked more healthier than Billy Joel I noticed! lol!! As far as DC5?? Didn't Paul McCartney write one of their songs or didn't he discover them? Need a rock n roll history lesson! Thanks :)
Originating in North London, the band was promoted as the vanguard of the 'Tottenham Sound', a response to the Mersey Beat stable managed by Brian Epstein. They had a series of memorable hits and knocked The Beatles out of #1 spot.
The Dave Clark Five placed 17 records in Billboard's Top 40 to go with 12 Top 40 United Kingdom hits between 1964 and 1967. Heavily promoted as having a "cleaner" image, Dave Clark Five holds the distinction of having made 18 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Thanks for this!! I saw the streaming video of it last night. I was so glad to see Tom Hanks and Dave Clark regain control of the evening after peope like Madonna, Timberlake and Iggy Pop showed alot of disrespect with their profanity etc. "Glad All Over" was great and Joan Jett looked good too. Thanks again!
No Offence Intended but would someone take that Harmonica from who ever is Playing it !!!!

Yes, Cougar is such a di*k - a phony di*k.
WTF is he doing in ahead of the Moody Blues and the Guess Who?
WTF is he even doing IN it? Until the two groups above get in, it is the Hall of Fraud.
That it took 44 years to put the DC5 in is a terrible indictment. Putting them in gives the HOF at least a tiny bit of legitimacy.
They waited so long Mike Smith was dead.
The gods of music are crying all over.

@TravelerDiogenes the guess who...another fantastic group. even some their early b-sides simply ruled the planet.
