It immediately crashed, so I searched this up and set -xmx to 5g, and it still crashes, I've tried this technique before I got alot more ram and it showed no affect before either. I've found that when I run Minecraft from the command line, I get a lot of OpenGL out of memory errors right before the game quits. Perhaps Minecraft is doing something dumb on the GPU, and the graphics library is masking the problem as a regular OutOfMemoryException???

Same problem. Brand new computer, 12gb ram, Java fully updated, Minecraft crashes after less than 30 seconds (probably how long it takes to load that much stuff into memory). I get the same results even after performing your little trick, I put in 1024M because I also read somewhere that more wouldn't work. Guess I'm going to go play Terraria :(

@Hagekyou : Its a 1.8 issue. I'm not sure what Notch is doing but by the time he gets ready for full release, there won't be a computer in the world that can run his game. As you can see from this video and the comments, there's a massive pouring in for this problem. It says it s memory problem, but I'm running 8gb ram, 2gb in my videocard, and a 3.4gh Quadcore processer.... safe to say, if this is a memory problem, Minecraft's future will be nil.

@Hagekyou : Np, I just read some stuff last night that was talking about v1.8.1 being highly unstable. Certain things with trigger the crashes. Creepers exploding in background, jumping on your bed will instantly freeze the game, placing too many blocks too quickly, lots more.

1.9 should be released sometime this coming week and issue should be fixed. Hopefully

Note: If this does not work, or you have both versions (64 and 32 bit) like me, then there is an alternate fix that worked for me. Get the HD Texture fix patcher, run it, and in the OPTIONS tab, you can also change how much extra memory is allocated to Minecraft. This, along with running Minecraft in compatibility mode for Windows 2000 made my Minecraft run (almost) perfect. Hope this helped! ^^

@GrimR3aper0123 The lesser the better; you don't want to dedicate your entire RAM to a single java application. Start low, say 1 GB, and adjust according to needs (i.e. increase as long as the error persists).
