Compared to the Australian presentation, SL made an extreamly poor shaw. Everything on the Drawing Boards and whats the guarantee that we could make all planned facilities in time, especially with our world famous undettered corruptions? Above all where are we getting the funds when we are already heavily indebted, having to borrow money to pay the interest already. It could have been a disaster as Greece which was a far more affluent and stronger economy went bankrupt having hosted Olympics.
@TheKUPPUSWAMY hey you are a really stinky son of dog..this is for Sri Lanka...What the fuck always..sinhala area, Sinhalese...fuckers go to Tamilnadu...you prove that you can't live in peace..fucking terrorists...go go go ...pleas go to tamilnadu..it's tamil's country...The Hell on the Earth...
We need to finish one major expressway every two years starting from 2014 until 2040. Let's have an expressway next to each A class road. By 2040, no town or village must be more than 40 km from an expressway.
Unless we see some more efforst on the part of the GOSL to be more transparent with how they do things and reduce corruption, etc this is a pointless bid. Just look at how they screwed up the IIFA and the Cricket World Cup. The ministers would make millions through commissions while the rest of us would be left to foot the bill. This is a fools paradise's hope.
Could this be the future of thing to come if the city is awarded the CWG2018?
Sri Lanka Cricket is in a financial melt down due to political interference, large scale corruption and short-sighted management policies. Cricket has become a passion for almost every Sri Lankan. Sadly the gentlemen’s game has been swamped by high finance, leading to persons without the requisite mental and moral make up wanting to be a part of it for upward social mobility and / or financial gain.
Sri Lanka’s bid to host its first Commonwealth Games at Hambantota in 2018 will leave a life-changing legacy for its 20 million people. Support Hambantota. GO to the official website, LIKE Hambantota2018 on Facebook and FOLLOW Hambantoa in the official twitter page. search for Hambantota2018 and support to take Sri Lanka to the next level.
@hambantota2018 Yes agreed, it will be life changing for us Sri Lankans, but life changing for the worse... the quantum of finance required to host a sporting event of this magnitude is way beyond our fiscal means at this moment in time - there is no way that we can afford these games without a) depleting our recovering reserves b) issuing more bonds. There are several, more urgent uses for the capital instead of this project. The cause is noble but the timing is absolutely wrong
@superkays We we able to afford the war for 30 years. I think that we can afford this for 7 years. Money spend for 6 years of the Hambantota project was spent in 1year for the war. Now the war is over all that money is saved & a portion is spent on Hambantota2018. We have lost so much time that was there to develop the country because of the war. Now we have to do a rapid re-building without hesitation. Although its seems like a waste of money now, in the long run it matters
@ihds6778 It's clear your knowledge of our current economic climate is limited, we could not afford the war and borrowed heavily to finance it, our children will still be paying the interest on these long after we are both gone. There are several issues with the bidding for the commonwealth games now, the most important being that the opportunity cost of financing these games are too high as there are several fundamental issues that need to be addressed in terms of infrastructure development
@ihds6778 the other is with the location, most games are held near major cities as the true benefit, the improvements in transport, basic infrastructure and tourism related development are more readily felt and needed. By having the games in a far out place we are wasting resources, as the demographics do not support such developmental requirements
@ihds6778 Finally, a simple google search will show you that there is always a massive overspend on these projects. Budgets will without doubt be revised upwards placing a greater strain on Sri Lanka's fragile, but growing economy at a time when we should be more judicious in our spending habits. The last commonwealth games was budgeted at under US$500m and the final figure was estimated at US$13bn. We cannot afford the overspend to be even half this amount
@superkays I am not an economist, but I think this project will be a positive one for Sri Lanka. I now live in a western country where only about 10% of the Population would know where Sri lanka is on the world map. Things are changing, there is over 30% increase in tourism within one year, perhaps it will increase much more within the next few years. I think this project will boost tourism on Sri Lanka and help boost it's economy. Not too many people out there know the beauty of Sri Lanka.
