This is John Lennon's favourite song as a child, according to a 25 Aug 2009 article in the Daily Telegraph, "Sir Paul McCartney denies he did not get on with John Lennon."
I find it hard to believe that ever since Jacquelyn Denning appeared in this lovely video of yours she either derived or was typecast into comedy. What a bummer. I can do without typecasting if this is a representative example of what it can accomplish. I would have imagined her as a greatly expressive, versatile intriguingly dramatic actress. I can't get enough of your video though, thanx for getting it really right the first time.
I'm so glad you like it! I actually devised this little piece for Jackie when she auditioned for me many years ago...she didn't fit into any part I needed at the time, but she was so striking that I felt I had to use her, somehow. I've always thought that I gave her a worthwhile vehicle to be remembered by.
I was unfamiliar with this song. It seems Hanshaw sang it in C and it has been transposed digitally to C# for this video. It's so beautiful either way, thanx for sharing.
That's an interesting observation...actually, I didn't deliberately change anything! The audio is from a cassette recording I once made from a radio show, and the DJ was playing 78 cylinder. It must have been playing a little too fast; because I also have CD recording of the song, and as you say, the key is a notch lower.
@possiblyblank I would think that if the playback speed of the 78 cylinder on the radio show had been faster than normal then the tempo or rate of beat would be different in both versions but it's not. The tempo is almost identical in both which could mean that it was digitally edited so as to change only the key from C to C#. Either way I love this song beyond words. Walter Donaldson is one of the truly great and unsung heroes of populuar music. He just never ceases to amaze. Thanx. .
Well THAT'S weird. I recorded that radio show in 1985, when a local DJ digitally changing the pitch of a song was highly unlikely, if not impossible. This is a mystery.
@possiblyblank For me the mystery lies more in the public's lack of name recognition of Donaldson as the writer of so many standard popular tunes. He was truly one of the greats. As for the different versions I think I actually prefer the one in C# over the one in C so it's really a boon no matter what the technical explanation might be. Wonderful video too, congrats all around..
Very affecting and charming. Made me pay attention to the lyrics and "white lies appear to the nature of the beast. The biochemistry of sex seems to elicit little gems of deceit from the male of the species in pursuit of the object of his affections - often meant at the time of their utterance but quickly absorbed when that object is attained.
Alas, too often, the "little white lies" aggregate and congeal into a great black lie with appropriate and lasting effect.
Thank you! Of course, it's our biochemistry in general which whelms us with perception of beauty (that girl is hot; that mountain is beautiful; that career is romantic) and the need to pursue it (I must seduce that girl; I must climb that mountain; I must attain that career)...so it could be said that our biochemistry is the reality behind what most people think of as destiny. Or anyway, how we choose to act upon the dictates of our biochemistry.
This was the favorite song of Madam LEE JONES "when I get to know you better I'll tell you my real name" . She was the Grand Dame of Kodiak Island. What a wonderful woman. Anybody else remember her?
Any idea where this beautiful lady is today? What did she go on to do? Or is she now a housewife in some suburban neighborhood, serving on the PTA, washing dishes and raising a bunch of kids?
Thanks, Tom! I see from your page you're an Annette Hanshaw fan...have you seen the recent animated film "Sita Sings the Blues"? It's been playing at film festivals in the last year, and features a soundtrack full of Hanshaw's records. There are clips of it here on YouTube.
I'm happy you did too! And it was a real treat for me to see YOUR video; it was quite lovely...and it made me see why this video would appeal to you...
Wow! What a great performance. You bring back an artform lost to the MTV nation. What a beautiful young lady you are also. You fit the part so wonderfully. It is nice to see someone who appreciates this art, and can so perfectly reproduce it. Keep up the grand work.
very, very well performed -- beautiful woman lipping Annette's song on record, and I'm glad this video won runner-up at that contest -- this girl's got talent !!
Yeah she does...AND is very beautiful, as you said. In fact, she auditioned for me for another project I was directing, but once I saw her, I conceived of this little video as a showpiece for her...I wanted to commit her to history. I'm glad I did, as she seems to have dropped out of the acting scene altogether!
As a recorded sound collector of this eras records I commend you. You have brought back sweet Annette Hanshaw to a new generation, and an audience who will appreciate her special sound once again. Very nicely done indeed.
Rediculous! What's the point?

@harrell222 Yeah, she was a heartbreaker alright. I don't recall how old she was here...early to mid twenties, somewhere.

She is just breathtaking

its as if it is her actual voice; who is it singing? When is this song from?

This is definitely Annette Hanshaw singing. I have this '78 record. It was recorded July 21, 1930 in New York.
