Our bodies are made of the very same elements that are "not life". What's so hard to believe that life came from "non-life"?
Theists believe that "god" came from nothing at all, yet we did not. Logically that's nonsense.
Now, if our bodies were composed of elements totally unique from, say, the rocks on the ground, we might have more reason to find it hard to believe in abiogenesis.
All things, alive and "not alive" are composed of the very same materials found everywhere in the universe.
Turns out Mark was an atheist trying to make the hosts put on Christian callers more and to make the show more exciting. I thought he was for real this whole time. I can hardly believe it.
@KMM61873 i do however like what mark did... he did what many theists would not do ... and most of the so called 'dumber' theists would almost never call in to the show simply because they are not interested or some other reason. Mark brought out some really important points to be made by the atheist experience so that the viewers can focus on the points and not necessarily the drama or 'excitement' of the particular show.
Mark from the Austin Stone will do anything too get his point across. The depths that a christian will reach is amazing. Mark, stop bearing false witness.
40:30 Fuck you Bob (Mark)! Love is supposed to be EARNED - you don't get to make a fucking baby and demand it sucks your dick out of love (similar to the Abrahamic god), you are supposed to EARN their trust and love and appreciation and respect.
If my kid, unprovoked, slapped my face I'd cry and feel devastated, I wouldn't brake his arms or whatever other type of vile revenge, you sick, immature fuckwit >:(
origin of the universe - multiple theories consisting of matter all ways existing, quantum mechanics, a 4th plain of existence in which universal "sheets" that collide causing big bangs, universal evolution of sorts in which universes in a way "create" or form other universes through black holes. then theres a deity who creates universes and then fucks around with it for enjoyment then lies to cultures to make them kill each other in the name of their god(s).
What do cells consist of, in the most basic meaning? Well, atoms. Are atoms alive? No.
Then, what follows is that life not only comes from non-life, but consists of non-life. Life itself is only an emergent property of a certain constellation of atoms.
If I say to a Christian that 50 billion kids have died, then they will either say that the children will be reborn, and/or that it is our own fault - that it is not God's fault that the world is so hostile to life. When Eve and then Adam ate the apples on the tree of knowledge, that was the fall of man, and after that God is just awfully angry at people in general in the Bible. So how is the free will argument rendered moot as Dillahunty says?
@DukeTwicep The conversation takes place in the context of the problem of evil. When they are making that statement they are assuming that the child will go straight to heaven and if you have to reach a certain age before you can exercise free will (about 7 or 8) yet most people die before that age it shows that god cares little about free will as a criterion for access to heaven. So it is the argument that god allows evil because of free will is rendered moot.
@DukeTwicep yes that would have been my response but they are taking it from the strict monotheistic view and such reincarnation is not part of their religion. I have to say that I'm not very impressed by the argument as an atheist so I don't think it will have much effect on an educated theist.
@Transandfree The argument about the children? Well, if you're discussing free will I'm sure it could be stimulating to ponder.
I just got an epiphany -- why does God keep creating souls for the humans? Did he have a stockpile of souls from the beginning? If so, why would he have souls stockpiled? If not... is he creating new souls all the time to be given the choice of choosing religion (why would he do that?)? Or did they all fail and it's just recycled souls? So many questions.
@DukeTwicep Certainly it does seem observed for god to have souls stockpiled and most forms of Christianity in the west would maintain that he does keep creating souls but never say why; however outside of the catholic/protestant world the view is very different. Some religions ,going back at least as far as ancient Greece, maintain that souls are eternal and have been around as long as god without creation. It's easy to argue that these souls are reused so that each can be tested fully.
@Transandfree So if you assume that god keeps creating souls, that would mean god is still kind of evil as he knows the world is really bad, and by creating new souls he is sending them down to their doom, probably not deciding to choose Christianity anyway. So he is still kind of intervening, it's not like he stopped "caring" after the jesus story. If it were up to me I would have gotten rid of all the stockpiled souls after Eve bit the apple, but noo, he decided to make souls suffer.
@Transandfree And one could argue what "fully tested" really is. To me, as a former reader of the Bible, it seems that is a test where you have to choose between good and evil. The broad path and the narrow, but it's not really that narrow as people are inclined to be good to each other. But it's not really about good and evil, it's not even apparent Christianity is the rightful and good path. And god probably knows this, but creates new souls and sends them to certain hell-fire.
I have a question. I'm just going to state my position on the subject on beforehand.
I don't believe in free will, I don't see how we can have free will if our actions must be based on past experiences, the state of one's body and the state of the environment. Free will assumes that there are free choices, a free choice is a choice without any dependencies.
But to my question. How is the "free will" argument rendered moot by saying 50 billion children has died? Continued...
I neer said science was "static," only that quantum physics has shit to do with what you say is ESP. The whole controversy over quantum physics has aquat to do with what you are trying to imply, also.
The issue is about the implications of the relationship between the correct interpretation of the measurements of the wave function and the peculiar behavior of a bunch of physical different quantities given how we now are not dealing with fixed quantities anymore.
You do realize that they are actually talking about quantum physics in a completely different contxt, right? You cannot quote mine like that against someone who knows about *it* b/c it makes you look silly.
Buy a book about physics for the general public that merely explains the science and has very little math (you don't need it to grasp and understand the actual concepts being discussed) and you'll know what I mean. You're not doing yourself any favors here.
Dude, sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm actually a physicist. And quantum physics has shit to do with ESP, or inexistent "ESP functions." The closest we will ever come to finding ESP would be to *invent* the fucking thing ourselves.
How? Well, you design a brain-computer interface (to tech yet for that) and have it receive and interpret signals from the electromagnetic spectrum into some kind of human readable format...like a fucking cellphone does. There you have it. Mystery solved.
An UFO is any kind of unidentified flying object, and for ESP's--have you ever read abou remote viewing? Yeah, that research didn't yield much, otherwise we would've known by now.
Mark from Austin Stone again... I guess his breakthrough with Matt and Jen didn't stick. He tries really hard with his Langan approach, but then totters off into morality and gets completely overwhelmed.
"What makes you think god is supposed to be moral?" Christians tell us he is the MOST moral being.
"I don't think god owes us anything; I think we've betrayed him and he's getting his revenge on us."
Er... his religious views seem to have become very disturbing. I hope he's not in the news...
If you are a Christian you have to believe that God created everything. That includes the Malaria parasite that is killing millions of children in Sub-Saharan Africa. Where is their free-will? So God not only does nothing to stop their suffering but he directly contributes to it.
Not only can't Atheists answer truths in human morality, justice & ones self awareness as an individual with free-will, they discount all of these carte blanc as mere biochemical illusions via their limited world-view. An Atheist has to assert that evil is merely a man made-up concept by believing there is no such intent in life. Individual culpability to crime or evil is only illusory from biochemical puppets of chance and evolution if there is no human soul or creator God with such intents.
Evil exists as a necessity for humans to have full true freewill as we self-evidently do. How could one even obtain by choice any values or virtues over vices if no evils existed? How could one be courageous with no danger or pain? How could ones temperance, forgiveness & mercy be displayed without human choice of good vs. evil or natural dangers existing? If there was no evil there would be no freewill in choice to being good vs. evil and thus no true human choice of any which equals freewill.
I wish You tube would change the hand votes to three options Love, Like and Thumb down. Like doesn't give proper emphasis. Perhaps a two thumbs up?? ;-)
have enough knowledge to know. I think that an atheist is an agnostic and an agnostic is an atheist. The separation of the two, let alone the existence, baffles me. Anyone enlighten me please? Thank you all :D
@laird47 Search Google for "iron chariots atheist vs agnostic". For a very brief summary: Theism addresses belief, whereas gnosticism addresses knowledge or claims to knowledge. They are not of the same category and one's particular position in one does not necessarily imply a particular position the another.
Could someone please tell why we have these two different classifications: Atheism and Agnosticism? I think that having two names is unnecessary. I understand what they both mean, but I think that both of these terms are completely unnecessary. Do people go around saying "I am an aSantaClausist?" or "I am an a toothfairiest?" I do think "Atheism" need an "ism." Atheist: A person who lacks a belief in a god or gods. Nothing more, nothing less. Agnostic: A person who doesn't think that we continue
@laird47 this is a great point. Almost every Agnostic is an Atheist. Some people choose to call themselves Agnostic because they are afraid to admit that they are Atheist because of the fact that people are very negative towards them.
@TheDarkknightrules92 Not almost every agnostic is an atheist, almost everyone who calls themselves an agnostic is also an atheist but doesn't want to commit to that label. Agnosticism goes to what you know, while atheism goes to what you believe. There are plenty of theists willing to admit that they don't know if god exists but believe it anyway. They're agnostic theists. They believe on faith. gnostic theists, agnostic theists, agnostic atheists and gnostic athiests are all real positions.
I did some research on that Chris Langan guy. He's a smart guy, but he might be a little nutty...I guess Mark...err, I mean "Bob" looks up to other nutty types...
On the whole mentally tricking yourself deal: when I was a kid I would sit legs crossed and stare at my wall and after about 30 seconds of extreme focus I could make it appear to be whatever color I was focusing on (in my head only of course). The human brain is awesome but somethings just aren't taking place in reality.
I love Matt's arguments but sometimes I hate the way he argues. He loses his temper way too fast at times. I really dislike the yelling, it takes away from his arguments cos it's what people tend to remember. It's too bad really.
@simsi1616 I'm an agnostic who refuses to go full atheist because of the general perception the public has about them-- The Atheist Experience Show bills itself as being for non-atheist callers and the promotion of "positive atheism." Matt constantly loses his cool, sometimes cursing at people. He's been encouraged by guests such as Aaron Ra (one my favorites) to tone it down-- vitriol is causing both sides to push would-be adherants away. Matt really needs to change his tone or resign.
@amberwhite122589 Yeah, I totally agree, Aronra is the best! I do call myself an atheist, and I try to prove to people that their perception is wrong, although in Canada I don't face too many religious nuts.
I really do wish Matt would calm down, stop yelling, let his callers finish and stop hanging up on them. It makes him look like a jackass and the worst part is that religious folk then feel as if they're vindicated and it completely takes away from his really good arguments.
@amberwhite122589 You can't refuse to go atheist. You either are or you aren't. If you disbelieve then you're atheist. If you possibly think there might be a god of some sorts but don't buy in to the religion then you're a deist. Agnostic is such a lame term, you might as well say 'sitting on the fence' and I don't value my own mind.
@000phill000 whatever... I guess Carl Sagan had no idea what he was talking about. Don't answer me back-- if you are that picky over a term that has multiple definitions I am not interested... take it somewhere else.
does anyone else NOT notice that "Bob" from "Austin" is actually Mark from previous shows??? Go back and watch the Mark episode.. Something doesnt add up here folks.. This guy has the exact same voice and speech patterns as Mark from wherever.. This is the EXACT SAME GUY!!! check it out and please TELL ME if I am wrong!!!! Damn and he was SOOOOO close to crossing over to becoming Atheist and then he impersonates another person and makes this BS argument... How did Matt not pick up on it?
@legacy917 Dammit!! Please Disregard my last comment!!! I stand here like an idiot and I admit it!! Just read the other comments as well as the video description... They already called Mark out!! BRAVO!!!!!!! I'm a douche...Good job for picking up on it guys!!! NICEE!!!!!!!!!!so sorry I doubted you all... go ahead.. let the flaming begin...lol
@legacy917 Hot Damn! I watched this, then randomly picked another atheist experience video to watch. and the caller was....Mark from Austin! either he's on a lot, or maybe (wait for it)
it's God's will!
or not.
as Einstein said
"God does not play dice with the Universe" (but I hear he's fond of checkers)
@legacy917 Actually, "Bob" sounds more like Andrew from episode #686. I've listen to the Mark calls before and both Mark and "Bob" don't really sound that similar. However, "Bob" does sounds awfully similar to Andrew and I'm more than certain they're the same person.
@legacy917 Maybe Mark has DID/MPD? They didn't want to get into a long discussion, so I suppose, even if Matt suspected it, he let it slide for the time being.
@legacy917 Yes! I did notice, and judging from the fact that your comment is at the top, someone else has figured that much as well. Oh, and there's another comment on the top with the same exact subject. :D
And I also think you picked up excellently on the sad fact that he hasn't changed, even though he seemed to wake up in that "overtime episode" that I'm guessing you're referring to. What a waste of time and energy trying to convince him was in the end. Actually he sounds like a troll now.
he actually is atheist he was on their blog and even said he calls in because he wants them to have 70% of their calls be theists which will never happen cuz theists hate being proved wrong. and even when they do call in they are still stupid! and don't listen...
Does anyone have a link or know if its even possible to access the paper that's referenced in this video? I just want to look at the specific statistics and calculations that Mr. Paul uses.
"You were whining about 50 billion children dead." OK, stop right there. Could he possibly be any more callous? He thinks that's WHINING? What's he going to say next, "You keep pouting about the Holocaust"?
God has to be amoral. He created all the moral situations, so he must not believe that any of the moral situations are any better than any other moral situations.
I've met a few people who had the good fortune to have grown up as atheists, and to me they seem nearly like characters from some advanced civilization out of science fiction. Imagine growing up without having to listen to creepy preachers' ghost stories about preparing for the end times and Jesus' return! I so look forward to the coming "Jesus who?" era.
You guys should debate "Shockofgod" who claims to always beat Atheists in a debate. Look him up on Youtube guys! I'll enjoy seeing the idiot be taken down
@000phill000 There was no show on July 31st. You can see when there was and wasn't a show at The Atheist Experience website on the archive page (located on the left-hand side of the site under "Show archive & content feeds"). Also, the homepage will general have dates for upcoming shows.
Is it just me or is it when Matt is host there are words or expressions he uses that in the context you kind of know what the meaning is but look it up anyway? Thank God(poe intended) for the internet because I'm not sure I could keep up if this was live I would constantly be referring to a thesaurus or dictionary so as I couldn't keep up with the conversation.
A questions I have about the Christian creation story.
If God spoke into existence the the universe how could his voice be heard if in the vacuum of space sound doesn't travel so how could the nothing before he created everything have sound?
If you where camping why would you make/setup trillions of campfires(suns) trillions of lanterns(moons) & trillions of tents(planets)for one campsite?
Why do you think creation scientists are so persistant in their belief in the "aether" of space, which would allow god to speak through the medium of aether. Yep, take an old physics idea and dredge it up for religion.
@mattshark100 Interesting I don't know if I've ever heard of that before, the things people can fool themselves/get fooled into believing. More illogical belief to justify illogical believe
There is absolutely NO DOUBT that bob is the mark guy from previous episodes. The funny thing is he totally got shut down once again by Matt. He could be an atheist attempting to play devils advocate though.
Antivaxxers are a major public health threat. These are misguided people — generally good-hearted but still mistaken — who think that vaccinations can cause autism in children. This is despite a raft full of evidence showing no connection whatsoever. Basically, antivaxxers resort to anecdotes, misinterpreting data, and an appeal to emotions to make their case.
@Brandt761 Yes, but people had serious doubts. I was still hoping that he was genuine, but this bob guy sounds way too similar to mark, and if it is mark, then he has either taken a step backwards, or is just trolling
@SnakeSalmon8izback Blasphemy! How can you say that anyone, ever, is better than Carl Sagan? You, my friend, are going straight to heaven, to be brainwashed and bored for the rest of eternity.
I have trouble grasping the idea that atheists are so mistrusted and ostracised in the USA. How is this possible in 2011? It makes me realize how lucky I am to be raised in a free society.
Hi everyone,i'm muslim and lately i've been searching about the existence of god and trying to understand atheists point of view, some stuff atheists say actually make perfect sense to me and i'm planing to turn into an atheist, but i just have one question that i didn't get the answer of it yet. How do you explain certain scientific facts that have been already prooved in the quran? that's my question i really hope that someone can help me.
- "How do you explain certain scientific facts that have been already prooved in the quran?"
See the channel of user/TheIslammiracle.
- "and i'm planing to turn into an atheist"
People cannot choose what they believe, so you cannot plan when you want to become an atheist. Atheism is not a religion, so it's not a club that you can decide to join. Atheism is just a lack of belief in any gods, so you can only realize that you are an atheist when you have already become one.
@TheAtheistExperience Sorry i obviously didn't explain my point verry well, by saying and i'm planing to turn into an atheist i meant i'm trying to break free of all the illusions and the crazy ideas they put in my head while growing up cause after taking a good look in stuff and trying to use my brain i realised that it's stupid and it dosen't make any sense but still it's hard to admit it cause when you grow up on believing in something then you realise that it's wrong it takes time to get it
@xilended the real problem in all this is that, if you sit down and read the bible, and apply generous rations of interpretation, then it too says scientific things. If any other holy text can be interpreted to be providing scientific facts that we know today, then the entire premise for the argument is destroyed. You cannot rationally believe the koran is telling the truth on the basis that it has scientific facts when there are other holy texts that also have scientific facts.
@TheAtheistExperience so you don't believe in the possibility of any sort of divine being? not so much is proven about the universe around us, but earth alone just makes too much sense for it to have been spawned at random. there has to be some conscience deity or deities that allowed earth to exist and make sense and give us such complex meaning. i can understand a lack of belief in every religion, but a god existing just seems too real.
@chadwick0091 more of a lack of interest i think, of the hows and whys of the universe. i'm assuming that because your calling what i think ignorance. why does earth make sense, if there was no consciousness behind its creation? i'm not specifically talking about a christian god or any sort of religious belief, just something divine in the universe
@sonicusr lack of interest? i'm very interested in finding out about the hows and whys the universe. im actually going into physics/astronomy. let me ask you, what evidence do you have for this "divine being" you're referring to?
@chadwick0091 i'm saying i think it's possible because it makes sense in a way, but it still doesn't make sense of how a being could exist. we also don't know why things makes sense like they do and why we're truly existing in a fixed universe with laws, so there are endless possibilities of what could be true.
@sonicusr of course it's possible. anything's up for possibility. it just comes down to: what possibilities have the most evidence with them? is there evidence for a divine being of some kind? the reason i ask this is b/c in your first post you said "there has to be some conscience deity or deities that allowed earth to exist..."
@chadwick0091 there's no true evidence of how and why earth exists, just theories and assumptions, and a deity is something thought of as all powerful and such, so with the possibility of a deity, that brings the possibility of earth and the universe. there's no proof of any divine being, but knowing what a divine being is and what it's supposedly capable of doing, it makes sense that one allows earth to exist
@sonicusr there is evidence of how earth exists. those theories that you're referring to have evidence to back them up...that's why they're called "theories." no divine being has ever made the leap from a hypothesis to a theory, due to lack of evidence. and how do you know what a divine being is anyway? how do you know the characteristics of a divine being?
@chadwick0091 there's no true evidence of how earth exists. there are theories that are based off of assumptions that are thought to be the closest reasons as to how it came about. i know what a divine being is because it's a divine being. somewhere along the line divine beings were brought into human knowledge. i know of it the same way you know of it. it's like saying i know what a demon is because somewhere along the line, demons were brought into human knowledge.
@sonicusr i'll say it again, theories are supported by evidence. so there IS evidence of how earth exists. sure, nobody knows for 100% fact how the earth or universe came into existence, so theories are the best possible explanations for these questions which are based on evidence. "i know what a divine being is because it's a divine being" nice circular argument there. are there anymore logically flawed arguments that you'd like to present?
@chadwick0091 theories are always disproved, and if a current theory isn't 100% fact, then it's no use in relying on that one assumption of how the earth exists. don't you get what i'm saying? a divine being was brought upon the earth by some means at some point in time, just how every word, idea, etc was brought about. based on what a divine being is supposedly capable of, i'd say i'd want to favor a being that might exist over a theory that might be true, and will be disproved.
@sonicusr are you kidding me right now? "theories are always disproved" really??? so the Theory of Evolution has been disproved, the Theory of Gravitation has been disproved, Atomic Theory has been disproved, Solar Nebula Theory, and the Big Bang Theory has been disproved? these have all been disproved??? a scientific theory is the highest possible achievement of science. nice straw man with your "if a current theory isn't100% fact..." argument. you just keep presenting logical fallacies...
@sonicusr Saying our earth "makes sense" is denying its flaws. Do you realize how unfathomably vast the universe is? How many uncountable galaxies in which there are unimaginable amounts of stars with planets? I bet all I have that there are more life-sustaining planets and moons out there (that are much nicer and safer than Earth) than you could possibly dream of (and for every one, trillions more that are utterly useless). Really, how inept and unnecessary is this divinity you speak of?
Oh yeah, Bob is definitely Mark from the Stone Church.

Mark brought out some really important points to be made by the atheist experience so that the viewers can focus on the points and not necessarily the drama or 'excitement' of the particular show.

origin of the universe - multiple theories consisting of matter all ways existing, quantum mechanics, a 4th plain of existence in which universal "sheets" that collide causing big bangs, universal evolution of sorts in which universes in a way "create" or form other universes through black holes. then theres a deity who creates universes and then fucks around with it for enjoyment then lies to cultures to make them kill each other in the name of their god(s).

What do cells consist of, in the most basic meaning? Well, atoms. Are atoms alive? No.
Then, what follows is that life not only comes from non-life, but consists of non-life. Life itself is only an emergent property of a certain constellation of atoms.
It's chemistry, baby!

IS IT GOOD OR BAD THAT THE 50 BILLION BABIES HAVE DIED ?
HumbleHenry1 6 months ago
Matt is such an excellent mind. Thanks for your wisdom and conversation.
redhillphil37 6 months ago
Cont.
DukeTwicep 6 months ago
@DukeTwicep The conversation takes place in the context of the problem of evil. When they are making that statement they are assuming that the child will go straight to heaven and if you have to reach a certain age before you can exercise free will (about 7 or 8) yet most people die before that age it shows that god cares little about free will as a criterion for access to heaven. So it is the argument that god allows evil because of free will is rendered moot.
Transandfree 6 months ago
@Transandfree But won't the Christians just reply with the old argument that children that die are reborn and given another chance?
DukeTwicep 6 months ago
@DukeTwicep yes that would have been my response but they are taking it from the strict monotheistic view and such reincarnation is not part of their religion. I have to say that I'm not very impressed by the argument as an atheist so I don't think it will have much effect on an educated theist.
Transandfree 6 months ago
@Transandfree The argument about the children? Well, if you're discussing free will I'm sure it could be stimulating to ponder.
I just got an epiphany -- why does God keep creating souls for the humans? Did he have a stockpile of souls from the beginning? If so, why would he have souls stockpiled? If not... is he creating new souls all the time to be given the choice of choosing religion (why would he do that?)? Or did they all fail and it's just recycled souls? So many questions.
DukeTwicep 6 months ago
@DukeTwicep Certainly it does seem observed for god to have souls stockpiled and most forms of Christianity in the west would maintain that he does keep creating souls but never say why; however outside of the catholic/protestant world the view is very different. Some religions ,going back at least as far as ancient Greece, maintain that souls are eternal and have been around as long as god without creation. It's easy to argue that these souls are reused so that each can be tested fully.
Transandfree 6 months ago
@Transandfree So if you assume that god keeps creating souls, that would mean god is still kind of evil as he knows the world is really bad, and by creating new souls he is sending them down to their doom, probably not deciding to choose Christianity anyway. So he is still kind of intervening, it's not like he stopped "caring" after the jesus story. If it were up to me I would have gotten rid of all the stockpiled souls after Eve bit the apple, but noo, he decided to make souls suffer.
DukeTwicep 6 months ago
@Transandfree And one could argue what "fully tested" really is. To me, as a former reader of the Bible, it seems that is a test where you have to choose between good and evil. The broad path and the narrow, but it's not really that narrow as people are inclined to be good to each other. But it's not really about good and evil, it's not even apparent Christianity is the rightful and good path. And god probably knows this, but creates new souls and sends them to certain hell-fire.
DukeTwicep 6 months ago
I have a question. I'm just going to state my position on the subject on beforehand.
I don't believe in free will, I don't see how we can have free will if our actions must be based on past experiences, the state of one's body and the state of the environment. Free will assumes that there are free choices, a free choice is a choice without any dependencies.
But to my question. How is the "free will" argument rendered moot by saying 50 billion children has died? Continued...
DukeTwicep 6 months ago
I neer said science was "static," only that quantum physics has shit to do with what you say is ESP. The whole controversy over quantum physics has aquat to do with what you are trying to imply, also.
The issue is about the implications of the relationship between the correct interpretation of the measurements of the wave function and the peculiar behavior of a bunch of physical different quantities given how we now are not dealing with fixed quantities anymore.
And yes, I'm a physicist. So?
unabomberman 6 months ago
@nebula25x
You're not doing yourself any favors here.
unabomberman 6 months ago
Dude, sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm actually a physicist. And quantum physics has shit to do with ESP, or inexistent "ESP functions." The closest we will ever come to finding ESP would be to *invent* the fucking thing ourselves.
How? Well, you design a brain-computer interface (to tech yet for that) and have it receive and interpret signals from the electromagnetic spectrum into some kind of human readable format...like a fucking cellphone does. There you have it. Mystery solved.
unabomberman 6 months ago
@nebula25x

@laird47 Search Google for "iron chariots atheist vs agnostic". For a very brief summary: Theism addresses belief, whereas gnosticism addresses knowledge or claims to knowledge. They are not of the same category and one's particular position in one does not necessarily imply a particular position the another.
LawngCat 6 months ago
Could someone please tell why we have these two different classifications: Atheism and Agnosticism? I think that having two names is unnecessary. I understand what they both mean, but I think that both of these terms are completely unnecessary. Do people go around saying "I am an aSantaClausist?" or "I am an a toothfairiest?" I do think "Atheism" need an "ism." Atheist: A person who lacks a belief in a god or gods. Nothing more, nothing less. Agnostic: A person who doesn't think that we continue
laird47 6 months ago
@laird47 this is a great point. Almost every Agnostic is an Atheist. Some people choose to call themselves Agnostic because they are afraid to admit that they are Atheist because of the fact that people are very negative towards them.
TheDarkknightrules92 6 months ago
@TheDarkknightrules92 Not almost every agnostic is an atheist, almost everyone who calls themselves an agnostic is also an atheist but doesn't want to commit to that label. Agnosticism goes to what you know, while atheism goes to what you believe. There are plenty of theists willing to admit that they don't know if god exists but believe it anyway. They're agnostic theists. They believe on faith. gnostic theists, agnostic theists, agnostic atheists and gnostic athiests are all real positions.

I love Matt's arguments but sometimes I hate the way he argues. He loses his temper way too fast at times. I really dislike the yelling, it takes away from his arguments cos it's what people tend to remember. It's too bad really.
simsi1616 6 months ago
@simsi1616 I'm an agnostic who refuses to go full atheist because of the general perception the public has about them-- The Atheist Experience Show bills itself as being for non-atheist callers and the promotion of "positive atheism." Matt constantly loses his cool, sometimes cursing at people. He's been encouraged by guests such as Aaron Ra (one my favorites) to tone it down-- vitriol is causing both sides to push would-be adherants away. Matt really needs to change his tone or resign.
amberwhite122589 6 months ago
@amberwhite122589 Yeah, I totally agree, Aronra is the best! I do call myself an atheist, and I try to prove to people that their perception is wrong, although in Canada I don't face too many religious nuts.
I really do wish Matt would calm down, stop yelling, let his callers finish and stop hanging up on them. It makes him look like a jackass and the worst part is that religious folk then feel as if they're vindicated and it completely takes away from his really good arguments.
simsi1616 6 months ago
@amberwhite122589 You can't refuse to go atheist. You either are or you aren't. If you disbelieve then you're atheist. If you possibly think there might be a god of some sorts but don't buy in to the religion then you're a deist. Agnostic is such a lame term, you might as well say 'sitting on the fence' and I don't value my own mind.
000phill000 6 months ago
@000phill000 whatever... I guess Carl Sagan had no idea what he was talking about. Don't answer me back-- if you are that picky over a term that has multiple definitions I am not interested... take it somewhere else.

Antivaxxers are a major public health threat. These are misguided people — generally good-hearted but still mistaken — who think that vaccinations can cause autism in children. @xilended
TheAtheistExperience 7 months ago 31
@TheAtheistExperience Sorry i obviously didn't explain my point verry well, by saying and i'm planing to turn into an atheist i meant i'm trying to break free of all the illusions and the crazy ideas they put in my head while growing up cause after taking a good look in stuff and trying to use my brain i realised that it's stupid and it dosen't make any sense but still it's hard to admit it cause when you grow up on believing in something then you realise that it's wrong it takes time to get it
xilended 7 months ago
@xilended the real problem in all this is that, if you sit down and read the bible, and apply generous rations of interpretation, then it too says scientific things. If any other holy text can be interpreted to be providing scientific facts that we know today, then the entire premise for the argument is destroyed. You cannot rationally believe the koran is telling the truth on the basis that it has scientific facts when there are other holy texts that also have scientific facts.
rodrommel 7 months ago
@TheAtheistExperience so you don't believe in the possibility of any sort of divine being? not so much is proven about the universe around us, but earth alone just makes too much sense for it to have been spawned at random. there has to be some conscience deity or deities that allowed earth to exist and make sense and give us such complex meaning. i can understand a lack of belief in every religion, but a god existing just seems too real.

chadwick0091 6 months ago
@chadwick0091 i'm saying i think it's possible because it makes sense in a way, but it still doesn't make sense of how a being could exist. we also don't know why things makes sense like they do and why we're truly existing in a fixed universe with laws, so there are endless possibilities of what could be true.

@sonicusr of course it's possible. anything's up for possibility. it just comes down to: what possibilities have the most evidence with them? is there evidence for a divine being of some kind? the reason i ask this is b/c in your first post you said "there has to be some conscience deity or deities that allowed earth to exist..."
chadwick0091 6 months ago

"i know what a divine being is because it's a divine being" nice circular argument there. are there anymore logically flawed arguments that you'd like to present?
chadwick0091 6 months ago
@chadwick0091 theories are always disproved, and if a current theory isn't 100% fact, then it's no use in relying on that one assumption of how the earth exists. don't you get what i'm saying? a divine being was brought upon the earth by some means at some point in time, just how every word, idea, etc was brought about. based on what a divine being is supposedly capable of, i'd say i'd want to favor a being that might exist over a theory that might be true, and will be disproved.

@sonicusr are you kidding me right now? "theories are always disproved" really??? so the Theory of Evolution has been disproved, the Theory of Gravitation has been disproved, Atomic Theory has been disproved, Solar Nebula Theory, and the Big Bang Theory has been disproved? these have all been disproved??? a scientific theory is the highest possible achievement of science. nice straw man with your "if a current theory isn't100% fact..." argument. you just keep presenting logical fallacies...
chadwick0091 6 months ago
@chadwick0091 you aren't getting anything. this argument is over.
sonicusr 6 months ago
@sonicusr well hey, when you provide a logical argument, then maybe i'll understand you. but until then, ttyl!
