  • A simple gastronomic question: Seattle seems to be rightfully concerned about cesium in milk and lettuce. ...Aren't y'all worried about 'local' sourcing after all of the Fukushima fall-out?

  • any of my stalker troll pals see this, right across the street, is the best pizza ever made at "the cheeseboard". untouchable extinguishes everything else...totally buzzed biking through bezerkeley. WOO HOO!!!!

    WOO HOOOOOOOO!!!

  • All this vitreal over a restaurant? Seriously? There are so many more important things to argue over than a persons choice in a place to eat. If you don't like the ideal of the restaurant, don't go. It's so simple. However, this place obviously has some draw as it's been open and thriving in the east bay for over 30 years

  • @mrpicky510 ye 30 yrs but i like to see em charge less or use better material.

  • Alice Waters= Brilliant!

  • Chez Panisse has definitely evolved over the years...it has evolved from 1967 to 1969.

  • lol at not knowing a thing about Chez Panisse. Chez panisse went from simple french food under Alice Waters's menus, to Excoffier classics under Jeremiah tower, which then spent 20 years evolving into what it is today: impeccably fresh ingredients prepared in a simple manner which emphasizes the ingredients themselves.

  • Jeremiah Tower!! No way...how fascinating!

  • COOL COMEBACK BRO.

  • This week at Chez Panisse you can enjoy:

Yellowfin tuna carpaccio with fennel salad and garden lettuces

Carnaroli risotto with porcini and shaved late summer truffles

Grilled Paine Farm squab with Marsala sauce, roasted pears, and seasonal

    vegetables

Pear, huckleberry, and ginger ice cream bombe

These SIMPLE dishes can be yours for a very REASONABLE, ECONOMICALLY feasible fee of ONLY $95 dollars...affordable on any budget. It looks like eating healthy is not just for the wealthy.

  • Considering the prices other places charge for a menu of this sort, this is reasonable. In NYC, this meal would cost about $120, not including tip.

  • I really hope the recession has taken a toll on this overpriced, pretentious dump. Really, I do.

  • It does seem to be a bit "in" to trash Alice Waters these days. I think she's right on but there is something in her manner that makes her sound a bit preachy. I think she's just really inspired and wants to share the idea. I'm sure she realizes that not everyone can do everything. But there are lots of people who can, and just don't; good food is not a priority for many. Not all practical to everyone, but that's why we have (and need) ideals after all.

  • wow "thegeets1881" needs to smoke a joint...alice waters does tons of good work outside her restaurant and supports alot of farms/farmers....geets get a grip

  • If you have a patio or yard you can grow vegetables. Put dirt in a tire and grow potatoes. Plant a tree from a peach pit. Only limit is your time and energy - but guess you'd rather waste yours trashing folks on YouTube.

  • What if you live in an apartment? What about growing stuff in the middle of the winter in the midwest? You belong in the same hippie category as this bitch.

  • I live in an apartment on the north side of pittsburgh, and I keep an herb garden all year long, and although I cant attain organic produce year-round, I dont eat processed foods, fast foods, or junk food - I cook for myself. My take on Alice waters is that if you can't afford organic, at least cut out the processing.

  • Also, yes Alice Waters did smoke pot in the 60's. she was also involved in the Free Speech Movement, the whole reason you can trash someone you've never met who's just trying to help our society.

And just because you can't afford to do what she does, doesn't make her wrong.

  • Comment removed

  • I never said that I can't afford it, it's just not very practical. She is so smug andf self righteous it makes me sick. Please do not bring the "Free Speech Movement" into your argument, for it has no basis here. She was a hippie who espoused drug use and communism and now she's trying to suggest that eating fast or frozen food is unacceptable.

  • I'm sorry, but where on earth did you get the Communism argument from? Your arguments have no basis in fact whatsoever.

Besides, growing your own food is how it's been done for thousands of years, and only in the past 2 centuries have we as a culture strayed away from that. I work 60 hours a week on top of being a full time student, and yet, I can still see the benefits of growing your own stuff, and cutting out processed foods.

  • By the way, being a full time student at a "culinary" school does not count, for it's not an accredited form of study. Try being a full time student at a real university and then tell me you have time to grow all that organic shit.

  • Just because it isn't an accredited program does not mean that I don't put 25 hours per week into it.

Besides, you're really just a fail troll, now please go die in a fire. STFU and GTFO good sir.

  • Shut up and make me a cheeseburger you overweight tub of lard.

  • God..a discussion of Alice Water's Eat Local philosophy has led to communism and drug use. What's next? Gonna tell me she's a Nazi too?

  • Maybe it's because Alice Waters is a smug idiot who shoves her arrogant hypocrisy down everyone's throat, and measuring a person's worth on how elite they are like her.

Some people just don't have the time or the resources to grow their own food.

Hell, I'll bet Alice herself hires illegals to work in her gardens for her, just like medieval peasants were forced to do for the nobility (which Alice no doubt thinks of herself as).

  • Some people need to watch how they exaggerate things, or soon they will risk sounding like the idiots who call Obama a Nazi.

  • You are an inappropriate and ignorant individual. Eating healthy is a dietary choice and should not be associated with a particular culture. There are many things you ca grow in the midwest and in an apartment. Alice Waters' philosophy is not about owning a luxurious garden. In fact, she has done much work with inner city schools educating children and families to eat better and live healthier lives.

  • I'm ignorant because I refuse to follow her idealism? I just don't believe her philosophy about paying $6 for a pound of grapes is very feasible, especially in this economy. So fuck off.

  • I'm so sorry the economy has effected you. You still seem to miss the point and continue to respond with a level of aggression that is inappropriate. It seems like posting negative comments is a way for you to get a response from others; this may be the way you were taught to relate to others. You seem very unhappy and I feel sorry for you. I hope you get help. Take care.

  • Wow! You can draw all those inaccurate conclusions about me from my youtube post? Interesting...I have a new level of aggression for you. Fuck You!

  • You're paying $6 for a pound of grapes either way. I'd rather do it directly by paying a farmer.

Your Big Macs are cheap because of government subsidies. If you hate communists so much, why do I have to subsidize your meals? Or the medical bills generated with your poor choices?

Oh when will be rid of these pesky commies? Long live capitalism, comrade.

  • Hear hear!

  • Read Thomas McNamee's wonderful book, "Alice Waters and Chez Panisse" for the full story on the restaurant. A great read and a real testament to Alice's commitment to better food for all.

  • yeah, vote with your dollars people! stop eating the fastfood crap as your food staple!

  • mhmm i live here i havn't been here many times but when I was their is was amazing, sorry about my spelling, and once when iwas 4 my mother went to her house for dinnner and I said but i can cook eggs for you and alice laughed .
