R.I.P. to the Cowboys first QB... Wasn't around to watch him play, but saw footage of him on the sidelines and in the games. He'll always be "Dandy". I can only pray that God has a star in the sky for you. A star in life, and I pray a star in the Great Beyond!!!
What a classy tribute to Don. The best! I didn't know that he could sing except on MNF. I loved his southern charms. A classy tribute for a classy man.
We'll miss you Don. You started up America's team.
I was at the session when Don recorded this song, written by Ray Winkler and maybe Eddie McDuff, in 1964 or 1965 at Summit Sound Studios in Dallas. He loved singing, but didn't have much of a sense of rhythm. In fact, he was "off beat" so much, they had to repeatedly splice the tape. It was on Reveller Records and included tracks from those of us who regularly performed at the Reveller, a club on Greenville Avenue in Dallas. Fun-loving fellow and always a gentleman. RIP, Dandy Don.
@ssalling wonderful insider info on the recording session. Travelin' Man was written & recorded by my dad, Kearney Williams, a Dallas-area policeman in 1963. My dad's original up-tempo recording was a Cashbox pick hit; we enjoyed the attention with him, then the song faded. Don Meredith recorded my dad's song a couple of years later. We didn't know he was going to record it nor why he chose my dad's song, but the performance was Meredith's bridge into acting; a new gig he also played very well.
Monday Night Football's intro on the night Dandy Dan passes was shamefully INADEQUATE.....SHAME ON YOU MNF...you should have done MUCH MORE off the top of the broadcast for a TRUE PILLAR of MNF. SHAME ON YOU ASSHOLES.
Sad news to pass on to everyone. Dandy Don passed away this last Sunday at the age of 72. We definitely lost a one of a kind man who was the start of America's team and Monday Night Football.
GREAT POST...LOVE YA DON....ONE HECKUVA SWELL HOMBRE AND ONE HELLUVA MAN....sorry 'bout the CAPS LOCK...But i'm SHOUTING THIS TO DA WORLD ! GODSPEED DANDY MAN !!!
I grew up with Frank Don and Howard. They were the greatest MNF team since its inception. Today, December 6, 2010, Don Merrideth passed away after a long battle with cancer. RIP Dandy Don. I never liked the Cowboys, and I never will, but you were a class act. Say hey to Howard if you will.
The first college football game I every watched in person: Texas A&M vs SMU, 1957. A&M, with John David Crow at halfback, beat SMU with Dandy Don, 19-6 at College Station. I'll miss the Dandy.
RIP Dandy Don...you truly brought something special to the game of football...Your memory will live on in my heart as well as all that love the game of football..
During a game at the old Cotton Bowl, a well-endowed female "entertainer" named "Bubbles Cash" walked down the aisles almost to the field. Dandy Don saw her and became very distracted. He called a time out and walked to the sideline to encounter an irritated Tom Landry who asked him "what's the meaning of this, why are you calling a time-out!!!!????" Dandy Don just grinned and said, "Bubbles Cash, Coach".
I went to school with Don and he was one of the nicest boys in the school. I never knew anyone who didn't like him. I saw Don and his wife not long ago at a reunion of the basketball team. They are still super nice people.
It's unfortunaly the The Cowboys weren't exactly America"s team durring Don's time for I understand they struggled but I'm sure he did they best he could.
Too bad his last year ended on a sour note and I wonder how he felt when they did improve after he left.
Woner what he felt about this season considering they came close to making the playoffs?
I think I can name three of the four golfers at 0:27...Otto Graham, Dandy Don, unknown, and Jackie Robinson. I can't place the fellow in the hat. Any ideas?
Nice tribute to a class act individual. Dandy took a great deal of abuse physically behind some awful offensive lines during those early Cowboy years. He probably also felt terrible about the two championship losses to the Packers and just decided football wasn't fun anymore...hence the retirement at an early age. But there were times, when Don was on, he was the hottest QB in the NFL.
@BullpenBoss From what I understand it was a 1968 game against The Browns that finally made him throw in the towel, though I think it was months later when he made the decision.
On one of those NFL Netowrk special one mentions he and another Cowboy enters a Dallas restaurant and Meredith and the player who I don't know his name are booed out of the place.
@MIKECNW That was wide out Lance Rentzel. Meredith deserved so much better from the fans and Coach Landry...tho I know Landry did really come to respect Meredith for his toughness and ability to play with pain. During the regular season before the ICEBOWL, Meredith was brutalized by the Redskins (Chris Hanberg esp) and won the game by thrwing a "dying quail" TD to Dan Reeves. I've tried to get a copy of this game for years but can't find it. When Dandy was on...he was one of the best.
@BullpenBoss If you're talking about an actual TV broadcast, you might be out of luck because I've always been lead to that most of those were either erased, that if they were even recorded.
I'm sure there probably film footage of it but even the NFL site doesn't seem to have anything on Meredith, at least I've typed him up and have found nothing.
Great tribute to a class man.

Nice tribute.
But please note that Meredith never wore a Cowboys jersey with his name on the back. The NFL added names after it merged with the AFL in 1970.
Meredith of course retired after the '68 season.
