@danuisortiz ...at first, it had to be paid for (at the early stage of DeviousMUD). When RuneScape Classic was released, they made it f2p. They later added p2p again.
RuneScape started out with a little browser game called "Devious Mud", made by Andrew. The game got developed and released as "RuneScape", the one we know as Classic nowadays. Only if you paid you were able to make an account, and you had to pay every few months to keep your account active. Later, F2P was released and players were able to play for free, but only a small part of the game.
Sorry, but you're wrong about a lot of that, coming from someone who started playing back in 2002. Yes, the game was first "Devious MUD," created by Andrew Gower as an experiment in Java. The commercial release was "RuneScape." Originally, all of the game was free; new members (p2p) content was added in 2002. In 2004, the game entered the RS2 version now called RuneScape. In 2006, RSC, as it was renamed, was closed to new accounts and any members who hadn't played in the last six months.
Part 2 of explaining to new people: RSC members still have to log in every six months to keep their account active. There has always, I repeat, been a f2p version of the game, and for the first year or so, it was entirely free and ad-supported. Most of the game was ad-supported until 2005 or 2006, and much of the appeal of membership was blocking in-game ads.
I retired early 2008 for the most part; with all the changes it wasn't fun anymore. If you've got any questions about what it used to be like, just shoot me a PM.
Sea Slug Queen was one creepy baddie.

No...Sea Slug is not the first ever released quest.
In fact, when RuneScape first came into the public world, the game had only 6 quests, no p2p, and no Falador.
The music fits very well with the general theme of the quest.

Actually, there was no F2P. Back then you had to pay or you wouldn't be able to play RuneScape at all.

Actually, originally all of RS was F2P.

I did say there wereonly 6 quests.
One of them is indeed Cook's Assistant.
Or did you mean that originally there were only 1 quest in the VERY early days of RuneScape?

@Jh5kRadio Cook's Assistant was the first quest released.
