I like how this song really introduces the listener to Roger Waters. Subtle, easy going, but words coming from the man who invented The Wall. Need I say more?
I hate that I was once such a naive Floyd fan. Tossing this album aside as subpar to the golden four. I wish I would have listened to their albums in chronological order. Can't wait to properly introduce my twins to this band.
Excellent video! I'm trying not to be one of those 'music back in my day' people, but does anyone know of a good new band or artist, doing something interesting. Post their name if you do.
Lyrics are everything, so i just have to point out the is not "if i were a book i would bend" the correct lyrics are "if i were a rule i wpuld bend", ans it makes this poem so much better also, it makes sense, right? After all rules were ment to be broken...and bend
I am almost *certain* that Waters is singing "If I were a RULE, I would bend." I do not here the suddenness of a "b" sound at the beginning of the word or the suddenness of a "k" sound at the end of it, and I here a long 'o' sound as heard in the words coo and boon, instead of the o/u sound as heard in rook or cook... besides, I've heard of bending a rule, but never bending a book...
@4Jeffomatic The entuire time ive been listening to this song, ive always thought it was 'Rule' too. I didnt even know that this lyric was debated, because it seems so clear.
@PatchCornAdams721 You're right. If u see the live version video clip posted here (If Live 1970) Roger Waters says clearly "RULE" as I always have been knowing for 40 years.
@JFguitar22 yes, but also there is a Rudyard Kipling poem entitled "If." It's actually a pretty good poem...but of course Rudyard Kipling can't hold a candle to Roger Waters!
@harikristi Maybe not as a musician, certainly.... but please don't say stuff like that, it makes me despair of the human race. Have you read The Bridge-Builders, just to name one of his excellent short stories??
@lemoncurry19 Yes, and I agree he's a wonderful author...my comment was meant in (sort of) jest, since the two can hardly be compared, really....they are two different genres of art....i'm not sure why my comment caused you such despair, but sorry about that! :)
I was 13 when this came out and i loved it and the album .I dont know where you are from but non of my generation ever said that The Pink were Heavy Metal
dopo le psichedelicche e underground musiche dell'inizio dell'album "atom earth mother" questa sembrava la quite e la preghiera .. Piemonte , Pettinengo, la i ragazzi erano già avanti , tanto. Nevicava .. in quella vacanza ,intatta.
If is one of my favorite Pink Floyd songs (pretty close between this, Fearless, and Time)....strange how many of the lyrics chould fit into Roger's later estrangement with the band....
..., è un brano che definirlo meraviglioso è poco...; è talmente dolce che immeditamente ti fa pensare, nell'ascoltarlo, a tanti bei momenti passati con la persona che ami... BUON NATALE A TUTTI
I've been listening PF since 25 years (Oh my godness !!!! :) ), I know their all songs even rare and they are still amazing for me, they are fresh for my senses. This music never borring me. This is love for ever :). Thx Thespadecaller
