Tai Chi is like real deadly in hands of an expert in the self defense applications of it. It was meant for self defense it's movements are concealed due to political powers trying to suppression of martial arts at the time. MMA is like regulated sparring with emphases of holding your self back.
@sasakoncar That works only better... the harder you push, the harder for you to maintain in center/position. Once a person goes off center so easily, you know what happens. The video explains very well, even better than some Chinese version.
wow this is soo amazing, but got a question, would you say this is good for like random fights? cause like karate theres always a stance or something but your not always able to get in that stance or such, does this have the same flaw?
I can clearly see the strength of your peng jin and your opponents energy going down to the ground. I can peng jin from my waste so my arm structure does not collapse but cannot yet direct the energy to the ground properly so i have to step back if pushed too hard.
It's rare to see kung fu practised this way these days, especially Tai Chi :)
I'm from Hamilton so it's nice to see another Canadian guy practising martial arts. I have a question, I practise Wong Shun Leung Wing Chun and was wondering if you feel that Tai Chi and Wing Chun can complement each other?
@Edalb123 Sure they can.. but it's really easy for both sides to get hurt, so people basically just try to avoid it. Not to mention taiji is a very low profile style and Taiji V. Wing Chun is a pointless match because it really depends on the fighters.
hey man - nice video -- I haven't trained tai chi, but I like the management of the opponent's pushes and straight punches - not sooo different from wing chun strategies :)
@ghost9pm no its not but its very veyr health benefical dont get me worng i take tai chi (long form) but it doesent have to do with excersise it manages your internal qi and teaches you how to use qigong and fa jing in eveyr day life
I heard about a guy who fought in a war and stayed calm throughout it because of taiji...if it's applicable to that extreme it can certainly be helpful to the common man.

good defense if someone has a severe grudge against your left forearm =) seriously lthough the technique does look very impressive. Trouble is finding a good teacher to learn this
well then he can turn his head in the direction your punch is going... so it rolls... and if your punch is just a jab or so.... remeber that continuing force is alot stronger then one that stops.
@joel844 MMA is a sport that amuses people. Taiji is way beyond that. As you can see from the vid, when it comes to real fighting, a couple of seconds is exactly what it takes. Master Zhijun Zhang has defeated a group of top level Karate masters back in the 90s. Each round took less than a minute.. The MMA stuff is just not comparable. It serves different people for totally different purposes. So learn Taiji but watch MMA, make your life rock, lol.
@MrMuaythaimitko Would you comprehend everything from a technique when it's done real time? Would it convince you or could you learn anything from it? That's why it wouldn't be convenient I guess : )

I have to agree to that. Since i am not a Tai-Chi-Practitioner I should not had to be so directly against aspects of it, which I´d barely understood. What is to be criticized seems to me, that there are lots of people out there, who call themselve `masters´ or `teachers´. They are responsible for most of the common misunderstandings in quite a lot of matters.
Hi, great video. This guy knows whats he is talking about, it's nice to finally see a taichi person who knows what "Pung" is. Principles are very important in Taichi. There isn't "better" martials art because a martial art is that, a martial art. There is only a total spectrum of varying degrees of understanding of the same principle. A circle will always seek to return or earth. Taichi is a way to feel physics and not just to understand it on paper. Form can change, but principle can't. Thanks.

Very interesting to see explainations of the mechanics for this stuff. What I havent really found out is-how does it compare against say pro-level mma or boxing- where the opponent has far less to 'worry' about 'on the fly'?& isn't range a massive issue for tai chi-the western boxer keeps on moving around and breaks range if he is losing, the tai chi man wants to stay very near-yet not wrestle. The prob. reminds me of Marc Denny having to readjust Kali traps to work against constant range change.
You present this information very well. The misconception that tai chi is only about yielding is unfortunately very pervasive. My original teacher, Cheng Man-ch'ing, spoke of "seeking the straight in the curve," which is another way of expressing this. Yielding is useless unless you are using it to "find a way in," as I tell my own students. I've found tai chi fencing to be a particularly effective way to teach this, because you can't reach your opponent, much less cut them, without it.
I love this video because it shows the true meaning behind Tai Chi. Tai Chi is not intended to be used in slow motion. Many martial artists call it a "soft art " because the real art every movement is a self defence technique. The idea of Tai Chi is to break your attacker quickly and end the fight. The only reason it is practiced in slow motion is so students can develop the body mechanics and structure to deliver the self defence techniques powerfully.Great job.
His right these are the basics of tai chi...... a common thing i see though is when people post up videos explaining tai chi they dont show their legs only the upper torso.......
so kids ask the him to post a full video of his whole body to get a better understanding.
I apologise that I may have posted too many times here, Being this the first time I have posted anything and didnt see it attach, therefore my mistake.
did i mention great Vid, one last thing I once taught a class (one of many ) and was lucky to have one of italy's top body builders at the time to use as My (ragdoll) was very effective visually for my students
kosombi "don't give up" you need to find an instructor (recognised) and follow a system or style, Hard or Soft, learning from videos will not teach you anything learn as much as you can from your instructor and once you have attained a suitably belt (grading) leval you can then use Videos like this one to improove technique and build your skill note
note taijiman7777's comment " I travelled far to learn from them, and often had to question the truth and value of what i was learning" It takes time and takes effort, Im also of the same mind of taijiman and thank him for this video excellant work
note taijiman7777 comment " I travelled far to learn from them, and often had to question the truth and value of what i was learning" It takes time and takes effort, Im also of the same mind of taijiman and thank him for this video excellant work
I am thinking of taking Tai Chi for health reasons, I would also like to learn self defense. If I took Tai Chi is there sparring? In what way do you learn to apply the the Tai Chi style is my main question, thank you.
You seem to me to be a bit depressed. I can relate, and I'm sorry for that.
I train in both "internal" and "external" martial arts, and have been fortunate to have some of the best teachers in the world. But I travelled far to learn from them, and often had to question the truth and value of what I was learning. Now, after 30 years, I am finding my own way and am grateful for their guidance.
I would love to see a real trained guy let himself be attacked by someone who is untrained. But the untrained must go all in, as a real fight. That would be very interesting to see!
@taijiman7777 That's pretty interesting, il bet you are well experienced. im not even past 20 yet but i studied karate from a very young age for about 8 years and dropped it in my teens. i sort of regret it but it wasnt very serious it was a community class with alot of whiny kids. i guess the only real martial arts is by asian teachers :p
Good point. The reason for that is that this is not a fight. It is an explanation of principles. Were this an actual fight, it would be so fast and subtle that it could not be seen by most people.
The explanation of a battle always takes much longer than the battle itself.
I'll see what I can do. But it tends to look like any other kind of exchange, unless the relative skill levels of the participants is very different.
@taijiman7777 lol, most people think it is always very fast, while starting slow is the most important i learned from my first lessons, it works perfectly now already! but i need to learn a lot more!
"Why don't we see it in the cage?" You mean grown men in their underwear performing bizarre S&M for the homoerotic thrill of sexually repressed teenagers? ;-)
I'm just kidding. Actually you likely have seen tai chi "in the cage". It's called "mixed martial arts" and tai chi is part of the mix. I teach black belts from many styles, and they all recognize the value of these skills. Tai chi strategy and techniques are also found in other styles.
@taijiman7777 Great response. As a veteran of many martial arts, when I taught Police Defensive tactics to new cops, a lot of Taiji was incorporated. Not because it is better, but because Taiji concepts have their place in any form of self-defense. After all, a kick is a kick and a punch, simply a punch. Both hurt when landed on your nose.
I really enjoyed this video. The beginning was filled with a lot of interesting theory, but I must say that in the middle, you repeated yourself a lot, and it was getting a bit redundant. But there were things worth hearing in between the repeats, so I didn't want to skip ahead. Right at the end it got VERY good and I stopped what else I was doing to pay close attention.
@taijiman7777 hey Ian- took a couple lessons from you--unfortunaltely i had to relocate...but my legs still remember the traditional wushu warm ups......i wanted to study some wing chun. I really enjoyed your teaching approach. I wouldnt mind going back to learn...but maybe for tai chi--but it takes so long to master doesnt it?
Excellent Tutorial, Thankyou for putting it on here, You explain the method very well as is said bellow borrowing energy is common amoung Lots of Martial arts But i really love the fluent flow of Taichi as you use the least effort to have a great show and controll everything. I don't compair Martial arts, Id learn them all if i could. This is my next one now ive seen this. I can see the full potentual mixed with pressure points. How do the cops ever lock you up? HaHa
Wicked tutorial i always wanted to know this Martial art and using pressure point attack. I looks so gracefull and hardly like fighting at all but the damage is being done.
You say miss conception a million times. I would also like to point out all these principles are present in many other martial arts, including boxing and jiujitsu and other arts. EVEN WRESTLING
Absolutely. There is nothing unique about the techniques in tai chi. The only difference is the pedagogy, and the emphasis on method and structure over technique.
With all due respect allow me to express my doubts about the idea of "turning his attention on the hand" in order to avoid his punch at 7:39 (roughly).
what do you do if someone tries tripping you in tai chi? or kicking you. i haven't seen any videos of tai chi practitioners moving fast enough to get out of the way / neutralize a fast attack
Sir, Your explanation is great, I am an engineer with 25 years of "Wushu" experience, thanks for making the effort ! (but thanks for not making an effort !). Lol
It's kinda funny just how applicable it is to refer to the motions and concepts as circles. To me it looks like you are being a ball in your own right. You push on something that's round from anywhere but the very center line to your force, and it'll just turn and twist and suddenly you fly by while it turns happily in place.
hey thanks for ur video, it taught me a lot. i currently study wing chun. in ur would u say that yang tai chi would mesh will with wing chun, at least in some of the strategy? or would u think bagua would be better to supplement wing chun?
Um as you should... it's not a sport. It is an exercise. Thanks for your two cents. Try it out, you may get some benefit. You know you can get benefits from things that are boring right? Ever been to school? I didn't find it too exciting but it did teach me some useful stuff.
Thank you very much, im finally seeing somone that knows what he is talking about. well theory at least. Im learning from my father and him and i went to a pushhand class. Were of course they new what they were talking bout some cases not. But when it actually came down to actually attempting my father was able to beat the teacher or they so claim themselves as master.... But thank youu for not being gay like all the other haters on youtube, So many remarks that are negative
Depends who is attempting the take down. Double legs are incredibally easy to defend against. Knee to the face is pretty effective. Sprawling is not only easy but quick. You can really even make the little brother defense work. You know where you just stiff arm their forehead? To be quite honest, what I like to do is to not be on the tracks when the train is coming through. Move out of the way. You don't need to use a specific form. Tai chi trains instincts and mobility.
Excellent work. So many cool demos and points made in this vid. I see you have developed your sensing jin to a high standard where by you can sense the students intention to move and therefore move as he does or just before him.
Neutralize one of the "arms." The neutralization, when done correctly, affects the opponent's centre. So, one arm becomes impotent when the other is neutralized.
Also, remember that neutralization happen in 8 planes. It is possible to redirect in any of the 64 directions. Thus a 2-arm push is only slightly more of a challenge to 64 angles than a 1-arm push is.
@taijiman7777 Basic Tai Chi Chuan Moves : Low to High Hand Exercise for Tai Chi explains quite well... ive done this maneuver multiple times... and its very effective
I would love to do some seminars in Barbados. It is very difficult to organize it from here, however. If you know anyone who would like to host a seminar, have them contact me (Ian Sinclair) at CloudMountainMartialarts (dot) com.
No. It is a matter of preference (and sometimes of availability).
For me, what I wear is usually a matter of luck, or what my wife will let me leave the house in. Sometimes she leaves before I do. When that happens, I take my chances.
Not to seem as a to criticize you but in 3:01 when you were talking about peng jing you might have wanted to go more in depth about were your structure is coming from. Your ability to not use arm muscles in peng comes when your chest is hollow and your spine is rounded with the shoulder and elbow down and the arm in a round arc as if holding a barrel this gives you the warding off power. Another thing when you speak about redirecting it should come from the waist not the arm. Informative video.
Wow. I didn't know tai chi could be used this way. I have been learning Yang style tai chi from the DVDs of Dr. Paul Lam because where I live there's no classes for it. Very interesting video. Makes me want to continue on with my journey even more.
I live in thailand and been doing many hard styles because its easy to learn in my region. I want to do taichi but its only available in the capital. Are there any way that i can practice it myself? Because there is only taichi dance in a chinese shrine in my province?
@taijiman7777 , i live in london , england . at the moment . love your channel , thank you for all the tai chi video's . id love to study with a teacher like you , your students are lucky . iv spent fruitless years studying with chines masters who tell you NOTHING . its enough to drive a young man total crazy ;)
I love your explainations. Your dialog and the presentation showing in tandem is excellent. Please come visit my site and rate my Pugilistic Form and Illusive Fighting video. I would love to rate your video but this new format has me lost for the moment.... Ahh, got it... Good job bro... G
I've started learning Wudang tai chi, it's so much fun! I was motivated by the aggression management training session we had to do because I'm a student physiotherapist. I was interested in learning how to defend myself in a fight without the risk of getting a criminal record for assult ect. because you can't have a criminal record if you care for people then it clicked, my dad does tai chi and he just started this course AWESOME :D
25 people do real fighting. This is exercises for for old people. They give tai chi classes to senior citizens at various gyms in my city.

Oh man...this was amesomely entertaining...for me at least... =D
I'm considering tai chi now.
tigker86 1 year ago

I am thinking of taking Tai Chi for health reasons, I would also like to learn self defense. If I took Tai Chi is there sparring? In what way do you learn to apply the the Tai Chi style is my main question, thank you.

@kosombi

@taijiman7777 That's pretty interesting, il bet you are well experienced. im not even past 20 yet but i studied karate from a very young age for about 8 years and dropped it in my teens. i sort of regret it but it wasnt very serious it was a community class with alot of whiny kids. i guess the only real martial arts is by asian teachers :p

when someone goes to attack you, they aren't going to just stand there like a ragdoll, and put their weight on your arm...
I don't really see this as a usefull demonstration.
Tommo020788 1 year ago
@Tommo020788
Good point. The reason for that is that this is not a fight. It is an explanation of principles. Were this an actual fight, it would be so fast and subtle that it could not be seen by most people.
The explanation of a battle always takes much longer than the battle itself.

If this is so awesome, when will we see this in the cage?

@drooghoudtgraanjenev

HaHa

fcuk4220 1 year ago

Absolutely. There is nothing unique about the techniques in tai chi. The only difference is the pedagogy, and the emphasis on method and structure over technique.

With all due respect allow me to express my doubts about the idea of "turning his attention on the hand" in order to avoid his punch at 7:39 (roughly).
I think it is a bit "naive" ...
I wouldnt try it against a nervous boxer :)
Still, Tai chi looks awesome.

Sir, Your explanation is great, I am an engineer with 25 years of "Wushu" experience, thanks for making the effort ! (but thanks for not making an effort !). Lol
LauGuardian 1 year ago
It's kinda funny just how applicable it is to refer to the motions and concepts as circles. To me it looks like you are being a ball in your own right. You push on something that's round from anywhere but the very center line to your force, and it'll just turn and twist and suddenly you fly by while it turns happily in place.

@taijiman7777 unless your being sarcastic, he means the wrestling takedown like how would you defend against it
Daermun 1 year ago
@bobbyny75
Tai chi trains instincts and mobility.

what if they push you with both arms, one on each shoulder?
wautomarocks 1 year ago
@wautomarocks
Respond to symmetry with asymmetry.

Does the colour of the robes you wear define your skill level ?
Tomymdobson 1 year ago
@Tomymdobson
No. It is a matter of preference (and sometimes of availability).
For me, what I wear is usually a matter of luck, or what my wife will let me leave the house in. Sometimes she leaves before I do. When that happens, I take my chances.
taijiman7777 1 year ago
Not to seem as a to criticize you but in 3:01 when you were talking about peng jing you might have wanted to go more in depth about were your structure is coming from. Your ability to not use arm muscles in peng comes when your chest is hollow and your spine is rounded with the shoulder and elbow down and the arm in a round arc as if holding a barrel this gives you the warding off power. Another thing when you speak about redirecting it should come from the waist not the arm. Informative video.
