  • I recognize this church by the picture I saw in it - they are incredibly proud of it in Weimar. It is Christus am Kreuz by Cranach, 1552. The church is Herderkirche or Stadtkirche St. Peter und Paul. In the tower of Church hung three bells , bearing the name of Martin Luther, Johann Sebastian Bach and Johann Gottfried Herder.

  • A perfect piece of music!

  • Superb playing and singing. Such a wealth of talent from composer, conductor, singers and players. For equally touching and simple theology go to my Jesus is still a Jew, at YouTube

  • Ok Bernarda , me entrego...te amo !!

  • ¡¡¡Felicidades!!! ¡¡¡Hermosísimo!!!

  • 3:38 to 4:45 indeed !

Merci!

  • 3:38-4:45 Can you imagine? This glorious exulting middle section is actually left out in a lot of versions!

  • Isn't she singing "für aller Gedeihen" rather than "vor"?

  • J. S. Bach...no hace falta decir nada mas =)

  • Labe die Brust!

  • Good speech, but it's MUCH TOO QUICK! Slow down please, this is a lullaby, not a Vienna Waltz!

  • I know Bernarda Fink. She speaks German without any accent

  • What a voice! She's great.

  • Gardiner is simply the best for JS Bach. Leave me alone with your Herreweghe and Rilling nonsense or what have. The singer is great, but her German pronunciation could be better. I hardly understand a word she's singing.

  • Fantastic, DIVINE, piece of music- even for the non-believer!

  • grande eleganza......

  • This part is just beautiful.

  • @buenosdiers Ich verstehe jedes Wort...

  • @crazymezzo09

    Ich auch:.

"Schlafe mein Liebster, gern isse der Ruh! Warte der diesen wird alle Gedeihen! Schlafe! Schlafe!

Das ist kein Deutsch, this is some pidgin nonsense German. Schon mal Emma Kirkby gehört? Die einzige Frau, die Bach singen kann.

  • @buenosdiers Seltsam....

Danke!

  • @crazymezzo09 I AM German and there is nothing wrong with her german or her pronounciation.

  • FELIZ NAVIDAD PARA TODOS

  • Wonderful Mezzo-Soprano voice ....Great Orchestra and Harpsichordist also....Thank you for posting!

  • heaven is place on earth!!!!!

  • it truly is!!!!!!!!!!!

  • =') simply amazing. Bravo!

  • Bernarda Fink was born in Argentina, she is a great mezzo-soprano famous all over the world. In this JS Bach Oratorio she shows how wonderful her performance in her marvellous voice tone and technique, Muy bien Bernarda, te amo especialmente cuando cantas JS Bach, que el Senor te siga bendiciendo con ese talento maravilloso que Dios te ha dado y tu lo has encontrado y perfeccionado.

  • @Jaimejimmyjim

Dear Jaime, she was born in Argentina to Slovenian parents (Eslovenia), and we love her too. I've heard here many times in Ljubljana, but she belongs to the world.

  • @Jaimejimmyjim Bernarda is SLOVENIAN singer, Borned in Argentina. She is number one.

  • Suena tan precioso y emotivo que "duele" :-D

  • bellssima aria!

    una ninna nanna veramente fantastica!

  • This is Bach in the great tradition. Everything is perfect. The vocal is the best I have ever heard, and I have been listening to this piece for 60 years. The English should not be ashamed of their musical talent. The Elizabethans never were. I don't know if Bach ever disposed of such singers and players. I think even he would be moved if he could hear this.

  • The soprano is Argentinian. :)

  • fantastic!

  • An absolutely wonderful and very touching performance and THANK YOU VERY MUCH for posting this!

I got 'to know' Bernarda Fink's extraordinary presence and style first on a production of 'Ai piedi di Magdalena' by CALDARA, a CD Set which is still after many years amongst my all time favourites. Bernarda has such warmth in her voice, such presence and then of course, Gardiner and The Monteverdi-Choir as well as the English Baroque Soloists make this an unforgettable treat! Thanks again :)

  • Gorgeous! I love the voice. I've sung choral music in choral groups for almost 30 years church choirs much longer than that. I've also sung in many choruses of staged grand opera. And yes, one can't be carrying their music around while moving on stage in opera. But in choral music, the singer, whether soloist or chorus member, has the music in front of them, but the singer is watching the conductor and taking its cues from the music at all times. That doesn't detract from the performance at all.

  • best version on youtube!

    defenitely!

soooo grest i love it! cant stop singing ^^

  • the voice of angel replied to me in this piece

  • if anyone have it in MP3 can communicate with me to send it to me?? I need it!

  • Bach is the best! This music is made for

    God! His music is amazing!Thanks.

  • Totally!

  • @UbuntuBird I totally agree!!!!!

  • @UbuntuBird Better... Music is made for humans, think god could not appreciate so much ;)

  • Most beautiful piece of music - superb orchestra and lovely voice - I only hope that people do not take serious this stupid remark earlier about not looking up - there will unfortunately always be some who prefer to look for something negative to comment !

  • Bernada Fink creates connections of love through beauty and passion of voice.

  • Bernarda:Dios mio,que hermosa sos!No eres...SOS!

  • fabuloso!!!! she's amazing!

  • I've listened to this clip performed by some boy altos and then found this one sung by a woman. Both are wonderful!

  • why this is oratorio?

  • Why won't she look up?? The audience aren't sitting on her shoes.

  • Like every other musician there she is reading her music part. That's what happens in Oratorio. In Opera yes, singers perform by heart. Still, she does the effort and looks at the audience whenever possible.

  • I know what happens in oratorio; I used to be a professional singer. But a singer should be able to glance down at the music and then look at the audience most of the time. She does start doing this towards the end. And her voice is beautful.

  • Altogether lovely and pleasing.

  • Be serious !

Don't understand what is fantastic here...

Limited voice, too fast tempo: it's a lullaby!

That's the way you love Bach ?

    Otherwise nice woman.

  • Well, this lullaby has just been changed to a MARCH! (Ha ha). In any case, I find it delightful, regardless. The lullaby version is also very nice.

You got to consider what a beautiful, and clear flowing voice she has. Performs with no flaws, never mind that the song itself is not difficult or challenging to the voice. Sorry if it's not to your taste (even though you do have somewhat of a point).

  • About too fast tempo: John Elliot Gardiner is one of the world experts in Early & Baroque Music, going directly to the sources, reading the original scores and documents of the era - not taking for granted what many conducters of the Romantic period and early 20th century did to Bach and all the earlier composers: turning them romantic too. Unless you don't believe in arqueology, as that's, what in a sense, the Historically Informed Performance movement is.

The voice sings what is written!

  • Yes, Gardiner is a great musician and conductor but too fast tempo, sorry...

  • wow..is she german?

  • no. she was born in argentina but her parents are from slovenia.

  • No, not quite German, but read the description, (click "more") it explains her birth and origin. Quite interesting!

  • helt fantasisk....

  • Awesome!

  • what a splendid voice amidst splendid music splendidly performed, thank you senhor bach...!

  • I fink she's amazing!

  • who plays the flute solo?

  • Rachel Brown I think.

  • It was my mother, Rachel Beckett :)

  • Absolutely exquisite singing. Phrasing and textual articulation are wonderful.

  • Outstanding.

  • THANK for uploading,so good, grate singer,

  • In the Matthauspassion recording by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Bernarda Fink also sings the alto-solo.

  • She did. And you will never hear a more heart rendering version of "Erbarme dich" anywhere.

  • Thanks so much for posting this great video!!!!
