I was there!!! I'll never forget this chance to experience Champ Cars in England. We were in the main grandstand opposite the pits - what a race. Unlike F1, access to all the drivers was fantastic too. We'll probably never see beautiful cars like these again - they sound wonderful too.
@Seephotos1 Yes this was a great race. Also notice how the front and rear wings are basically flat compared to today where they're the same as a road course setup.
@champcar4ever That's right - designed for speed. The IRL cars don't quite do it for me these days, however I'm looking forward to seeing Paul Tracy irun the Indy 500 - should be fun!!!! Unfinished business on his part. Are you from the USA and if so, did you go to any Champ Cars races?
@Seephotos1 Yes I'm in the USA and I did go to a number of Champ Car races but only at Laguna Seca. Check out my home video I took from 2002 if you haven't seen it already.
@champcar4ever Great video. I have got something similar from Rockingham - I will dig it out and post it so that you can have a look. Are you into F1? Me and my son will be at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in July as we only live an hour or so from the circuit. We go every year.
@Seephotos1 Yes I do watch F1 and have been since 1987. It's great that you get to go with your son to Silverstone every year. That's one of the tracks I'd like to visit in Europe one of these days. The others being Spa and Monza. Have fun at the British GP!
To elaborate a bit further, Rockingham (NC)'s official name was NORTH CAROLINA Motor Speedway before it went on hiatus in 2004. ARCA champion Andy Hillenburg bought the track in 2007 and re-opened it as Rockingham Speedway.
To add to the town confusion, there is also a BRISTOL in Southern England.
Man, such good cars!

Were the European CART races in 2001 televised live? With the time difference I could see why a tape-delay would be sensible.
FrodothePuppet 3 years ago
Yes they were. We at Mexico, could see the races at Motegi Japan live. The european races started at 7am, so it was a good time for breakfast.

This is Rockingham Motor Speedway. The one in NC is Rockingham Speedway.
champcar4ever 3 years ago
This isn't Rockingham, it's Corby. Rockingham is in North Carolina, and that track is ARCA-sanctioned.

Watched this from Turn 4. Nothing beats being there just for one finish like that. End of an era though.

On the outside even, on a flat oval. Wonderful moves.

Flat ovals, the only way to go with OW cars.
Wonderful stuff.
AtomicMutant 5 years ago
Still one of the top 3 passes ever on an oval, especially since it's at over 210mph!

Nice racing there. Great times.
