The 'Dead Air' is the vacuum created by the skydiver moving through the air. If you stick your hand out of a moving car and lower it behind the rearview mirror you can feel that same effect. To a skydiver it is like getting sucked into the person below you.

it means that there are places in the sky where the airdensity is lower than on others. i have no understanding of how theyre supposed to form, but these suits rely on updrift from the air and when they reach one of these pockets the uplift collapses and they fall through that dead air [hole].

dont ask me how these things form. there shouldnt be anything there to create such small turbulence and air should be distributed rather equally. i dont know..

The only thing creating these "holes" of dead air is other wingsuit pilots. When someone flies through the air the air behind the pilot gets turbulence. The problem here was that some pilots were flying directly in the other pilots back-draft making them losing their lift. Seems like some of the pilots were too inexperienced to be flying in such a large group, with experienced pilots this wouldn't have been an problem.

i dont see the stream that more than one of them flies through to cause problems a second. when you have two cars lined up behind each other than one can be in the wind shadow of the other, but these skydivers are not "behind each other" in any way relative to the air they fly through?

When everyone is on the same level, like most of them are at all times, then everything is fine. The wingsuit fliers are flying forward fast, but also dropping downwards. The back-draft is therefore behind and up from where the pilots are. In the second crash you see very good that one is above and a bit behind the other pilot and that's exactly where the turbulence is. He loses all lift and falls like a rock. It's all a game of angles.
