  • It's always great to hear.

  • This song is so hauntingly beautiful. Reminds me of how I felt during the winters in Albany New York during the 70s.

  • ...sometimes in winter night back in spring of frozen rain..1970

  • yeah, i loved this song back then on the album

  • The BS and T horn section was far superior to Chicago's in my opinion , they could pull out moods and styles that could pull memories from your soul.

Winter in Wisconsin when I was a kid , Insane but true. So much talent , where has it gone?

  • Let's see if we can name some current bands with this kind of musicianship. Um, well, uh, lemme think.

  • I loved this album -- played it over and over. I have been moved to get it out and see if it still plays.

  • This song was the B side of a 45 I grew up with, and I loved this piece so much I don't even remember what the A side was. (Had to Google it to learn "And When I Die" was the A side.)

  • Great band and i grew up listening to my fathers music from his life and I love this band and also I am a sucker for a great brass section.

  • beautiful song! never to be forgotten!

  • For the time signature geeks at 0:56 it goes into 9/8, 0:59 back to 4/4, 1:02 back to 9/8, 1:05 3/4, 1:07 back to 4/4. Very effective.

  • Great audio capture!

  • G i a n t s !

and DC"T is the best singer!

  • I'm not a horn person , but in this the horns take on a whole different meaning

This is one of those bands from the 60-70s that will never be repeated.

  • One of those albums that takes hold of you and never lets go....

  • I first heard this song when the album first came out in the middle 70's, it has "New York" written all over it. Thankyou!!!!

  • @lautrec1900 - Actually, this albumn came out in 1967 or 1968.

  • @gilliansl It was actually 1969.

  • @lautrec1900 So far I've never been in NYC, but I can really imagine walking there in winter with this song on my headset.

  • I'm suprised this song doesn't have more hits.What a great song.

  • @kidkosh - Many people that have not listened to the albumn do not really know this song. I have the albumn... on vinyl!

  • "Sometime In Winter"~スティーヴ・カッツが歌うB・S&Tの叙情ナンバー、ディック・ハリガンのアレンジが冴に冴えた傑作セカンド #jazzm

  • Steve Katz! What an incredible voice...Steve and Richie Fury of the Buffalo Springfield...top of the line! ☺

  • I forgot all about this song! You guys are all right, the greatest memories all just came flooding back to me. How lucky were we????

  • I never heard a better rock jazz album than this in my life. It is one of my 10 most favorite albums too.

  • As stunning as when I was a boy, long ago.

  • The horn break at 1:08 is one of the most wonderfully symphonic moments in all of rock music.

  • I listened to this song after my heart was broken for the first time, such a great song

  • Jazmckay and Manthasagittarius - you both took the words out of my mouth...Exactly!! And Jaz - just as your mom got you the album, my boyfriend got my mom the album and we all played it to death! I can still see the ol' stereo console in the living room, looking like a 4 foot long sarcophagus of sorts, with the burlappy fabric covering the speakers and the slot for keeping your albums. Ah, to clean the dust off of that needle one more time!!

  • @faklempt1 You had one of those huge-assed ''hi-fi's''too?.I remember in the summer of 1968 listening to ''Light my Fire''by the Doors on my folks monster console...........

  • One of my favorite songs ever! This has to be one of the nicest flute parts in any pop songs.

  • SOMETIMES IN WINTER 、スティーヴ・カッツさん!必ず貴方が、アルバムで1曲は歌ってましたネ!~B・S・T~当時ジャズもロックも教えてくれた!

  • Katz"s voice is an elegant contrast to DCT, a song that vividly portrays the pain of anyone who has had to face winters cold without the one they loved.

  • I just came home from a BS&T concert, unfortunately they didn't play this song, it is my absolute favorite!! They still sound the same.

  • My brother had this album when he was 18 at the time and I was a whole 8 years old back in 1971

  • JUst tell me did his girl leave him or die? I always wondered that with this great sing

  • @hitdamusik Could be either, sweetheart. That part leaves room for you. You know, once you get old enough you could suddenly realize it's your own self from those days that's gone.

  • not just that but how the words just resurface in ones mind and you can freely sing along . :-)

  • In Feb. 1970 I treated myself to a hit of BlueCheer. It was the one and only time that I did Acid. It was a super trip, but a little too much at the peak. I do wish that I would have played this song at the time. Thank You for posting.

  • Using my children and their friends as examples, I see those raised with music as a part of their lives, tend to appreciate all kinds and do make associates to certain songs.

  • My Dad had this album on vinyl. This has to be the greatest BS&T song ever. So powerful.

  • Such a pretty song.... brings back memories. Interasting how so many of us 'boomers' used and use music as a mental reminder of events in our lives both good and bad. Music today, for the most part, just doesn't seem to offer that same kind of association. Thanks for the memories :-)

  • @freespirited845 I think that still happens automatically, as long as there is a strong emotion even being experienced -- whatever the music is, it will stick to the feeling. But yeah, the musical quality itself and the whole-hearted willingness to HAVE the feelings, let them come and admit to them in song -- that does seem to be different now.

  • I love this song it reminds of Christmas in Chicago during the 70's . I played in over and over. Thank you for sharing...

  • amazing how it can bring back memories that are 40 years old

  • can not get much better than this!

    thank you so much!

  • This reminds me of the winter of 1970, and it is my favorite song of that year. I would describe this song as radiant; a beautiful and evocative arrangement, a sophisticated and beautiful melody, a superb and understated vocal -l and lyrics that actually tell a story.

  • I haven't heard this song in more than a few decades, yet it comes back familiar as always, evoking the same feelings as in 1969.

  • It's snowing in Maryland right now..looking out the window I had to play this..reminds me of a beef stew n biscuits day..and yes she just left me satisfied..

  • Reminds me of snowy days in the Village and walking in slush and dirty snow on South Houston Street

  • This is the definitive version of this song, song by Steve Katz. It's the best. I wore out this album in my freshman year at Harpur. I would sit & pine over Maddy E., while listening to the soundtrack of my life.

  • could you post he's a runner by bs&t please luchozepp? if you have it of course

  • What a killer tune.

The title brings me back to memories of winter days 40 years ago. The people that only see winter as something negative can't understand what I'm talking about. When everything is covered in snow and you have a bright sunny day with clear blue sky the world looks so different from any other time of year. Having a little bit of weed or a special friend around made the experience even more intense and memorable. Such sweet times.

  • LOVE BS&T and this is my favorite song. It brings back warm memories of NYC, my girlfriend and Pratt Institute. God I miss them.

  • Comments about the drummer. What a great sound and sense of swing. They were so musical - this band.

  • Vocalist is Steve Katz who also wrote this song. Al Kooper leftt the band before this album.

The snare drum on this track is played with wire brushes. Both the snare drum and hi-hat are close mic'd so you can really hear the articulation. Bobby Colomby was the drummer (a very good jazz player) who pulled this off.

BTW, the producer of this album is James William Guercio who also produced The Buckinghams and Chicago Transit Authority/Chicago.

  • Is this Al Kooper singing?

  • @jwmellott Steve Katz

  • @ricksand2... I of course need to give credit to Steve Katz for his unbelievable vocals on this incredible song.. My bad, for not mentioning him in my previous comment to "manthasagittarius".. Thanks for the reminder.. All my respect to Steve Katz., and David Clayton Thomas.. and all that made up Blood Sweat and Tears.... RickzzSands...AKA Mr. Las Vegas

  • Good enought to be heard during Christmas time.

  • Immediately takes me back to the winter of 1970 and reminds me how I miss my first love.......hope you see this Bob wherever you are!

  • @mdwlcx Brings a tear to my eyes too....weekends at New Paltz with Lili...1970

  • Everything is right here. Lovely track.

  • When you focus on the snare, it's the most marvelous atmospheric effect -- little light touches on the head, almost random: "t'tk, t'ch, t'tk tk, t'chrrr. . ." Sounds like that brittle touch of freezing rain or wet snowflakes hitting the windowpane.

They were a cut above, a cut above.

  • @manthasagittarius

Thjat's what drummers know as "drags" "drag rolls", etc. or "ruffs" Basically grace notes to accent the beat...used very effectively here...one of the all-time greatest bands ever...BS&T, Chicago, Three Dog Night...oh the 60s and 70s...rocks greatest era...the new stuff is crap...

  • How true that is Mantha! still think of my old gf and I walking in Central Park in winter

    '69. just snow and moonlight.

  • Beautiful, haunting time capsule which takes me perfectly back to high school in the western suburbs of Chicago. Great memories stirred up by this one. Whatever became of them? Thanks for posting!

  • wonderful music

  • I heard this song in Hart House of Toronto University in 1970.... and I steel remeber the surprise to hear the sounds and quality of this song.

    Thanks you for posting it.....

  • No other song in history can create a mood like this one ,

A far superior band then Chicago

  • Really fantastic B.S.&T. selection. Thanks for the load.

  • A song you just close your eyes to...and if you grew up in the 60's/70's and had a first love during this time (especially during the winter), it all comes rushing back! That's what makes Steve Katz's classic timeless.

  • Beautiful composition. Nice interplay between the drums and flute. Great horn arrangment. Very nice expression of talent.

    Larry, Taiwan

  • Just a beautiful beautiful song.......... Fantastic Vocals.

  • PLAYED THIS ALBUM YES ALBUM .. AT PARTIES WHILE WE DID THE PASS OUT GAME.. WHERE YOU HUGGED SOME ONE UNTIL THEY PASSED OUT. BUT IT WAS BETTER THAN SNIFFING GLUE.THAT IS AS BAD AS IT GOT .ME CHRIS LAGEN .. PAUL HERRIG TRACEY WEILAND HERRON HINMAN. TIM GINTER JIMMMY MITCHELL AND ALL OF US WHO HUNG OUT AT HERRON'S HOUSE WHEN HIS PARENTS WERE GONE. DRINKING QUARTS OF BEER NOT 40'S.RUNNING FROM THE COPS AND HIDING IN THE WOODS. BY A BLUFF NO WAY OUT. FOR YOU YOUNGSTERS. HERE IS ONE U WILL KNOW..

  • Saw them last year in Vegas, much different cast of characters, still inventive and good. They brought Steve Katz, perhaps the only original (maybe one more) out for a few songs, he still did it. It was good to see.

  • Blood Sweat and Tears rules! I remember hearing this great music on my Mom's 1968 Caprice Station wagon's Delco stereo radio as a kid!

  • @jimbobubbadj "Delco stereo radio" - Now THERE'S a distant memory! Thanks for reminding me! Haven't thought about those in years. My dad had one in his 1974 Chevy. I hated that car cause it was a 4-door and "pea green!" Delco's were the state of the art at one time, no cassette yet, of course! LOL BST rules!

  • @BillySeagull The 2 doors were more hip than the 4 door cars. 8 tracks were the standard for pre recorded medium back then. Cassettes were a novelty.

  • This beautiful tune brings me back to 37 years ago when I was a sophomore in high school while I was dating a girl.Everytime I hear this,I think of her. She's married to someone else,as I am,but this will always bring back many good memories of taking walks with her and talking about life, and dreams and everything else under the sun. I am of the belief that BSWT had one of the top horn sections, along with Chicago and Tower of Power.Whoever posted this....Thank You

  • @borecleaner1 Like nothing ever changed. That is power for you.

  • It's like a drug, really -- the strength of the emotion 40 years ago just comes straight back like nothing ever changed. Like a perfume or the smell of baking bread. You got to be careful what you associate a good song with . . . because it will always come straight back with the first three notes.

  • @manthasagittarius You are SO right!!!!!!!!!!.This tune came out decades ago and everytime I listen to it, I htink of a girl I went with in high school.she's married to another,as I am,but I am almost magically transported back to a time of quiet walks in the evening, yakking about evrything under the sun and enjoying the simple company..A Great tune that will last forever.Damn shame that BST didn't get the play that most other less talented groups..pity

  • @manthasagittarius ..I just love your comment... You just couldn't have said it any better... This song is just so "INCREDIBLE".. David Clayton Thomas and Blood Sweat and Tears are just one of the "PREMIER" groups to come out of the late 60's and early 70's... How can it get any better than this?? Right in the same vein as Justin Hayward and John Lodge of the "MOODY BLUES"... Didn't we have it all in this era of music... Bell bottom jeans , pooka shells, waffle stompers, and black light posters

  • @manthasagittarius

    Beautifully said!.

  • @manthasagittarius You are SO right! Especially when, like me, you explore all this great old music late at night. Suddenly you're right back there, and you even remember what the weather was like, who you were with and EXACTLY how you felt about them.

  • @manthasagittarius You are SO right! Especially when, like me, you explore all this great old music late at night. Suddenly you're right back there, and you even remember what the weather was like, who you were with and EXACTLY how you felt about them.

  • everyone should hear this song at least a once, preferably a thousand times

  • my god, this song still sounds so good after all these years. another classic!! Steve Katz does a great job singing on this BST tune....

  • BillyGuns is right on it. Sad to say that the last truly great singer/songwriters appeared in the early '80's. There might be an argument for Kurt Cobain as a singer/songwriter shrouded in the volume and strange attitude of Punk Rock, but yes, the apex of the form stretched from the late '60's to the early '80's, peaking full in the early to mid '70's. This song is as good as it gets.

  • WOW!!!!! Thank you SOOOOOO much for posting this! I love it!!!!

  • So in love with this song!!!

  • I have always loved this song.....longing for a summer love in winter.

  • My mother bought this album for me for Christmas when I was 13 years old. I wore it out on my Decca recvord player as a kid in Midland Texas. Thank you for posting this.

  • @Jazmckay you're welcome man!

  • @Jazmckay lol ironically my mother bought me this ablum when i was thirteen as well, cept it was a CD (22 now)

    proof of a timeless classic.

  • @Jazmckay I understand... I understand entirely

  • @Jazmckay

You have an awesome Mom !! My parents freaked at all the stuff my sisters and I listened to. . . .

Now I have a daughter (age 21) who digs the Beatles, Van Morrison, etc., and I try to listen to her music w/ an open mind as well.

  • One of the most frustrating things is how sooooo many people never got to know the REAL Blood Sweat & Tears. The vocals on this song are by Steve Katz - Formerly of The Blues Project.... he DEMANDED to have at least 1 lead vocal on each album - I KNOW !!!

  • @avp0713

The original band was outstanding for its inventiveness, originality and taste. After the 4th album personnel changed and things were never the same.

Katz should have been given more space to offset the ebullient Clayton-Thomas.

  • Gorgeous! Ah, music used to be music once upon a time. The '80s saw the last of the genius songwriter performers.

  • This is a song I I'd like to hear the Moody Blues perform. I think it woud be very adaptable to Justin Hayward's voice and style plus the flute heard in this song is so typical of Moodies music. This is a great tune but I think it would be even better given the timber of Justin's voice and the heart and soul he brings to a song.

  • You are so spot on suggesting this song be done by Moody Blues.....I am a flautist and love love love the intricate rhythms the flute parts lend...almost like they are echoing the percussion!!! JBF

  • Yes I agree, Moodies and BS&T3 were 2 of the 1st albums I ever bought back in 1970.

  • I love this song, does anyone know the guitar tabs for it?

  • Comment removed

  • This song freaked me out the first time I heard it on this album it was a gift I bought for my brother.....I was only used to hearing Spinning wheel on the radio. I was seven years younger then him. Still beautiful in a lonely desolate way. I love this song.

  • I had this album. Still might. beautiful song....

  • very lolvey song xbabsie

  • Perfect....

  • Used to love this song. Such memories of being 21 and in love in England. In winter. Still great now. Poetry.

  • Very pretty song. But it very seldom comes on any radio station.
