folks really need to understand that in these days elisabeth was checked by the doctors to ensure she was still virginal and later still able to have children. had she ever not been virginal then they would have found a cuckold to be king because no true powerful man would have taken a wanton woman to wife. this is just more proof that the dudley lie is a lie. and that stick has been shoved deep into the ground and broken off. i am tired of the movies portraying liz as less than she was.
@ladyoftheheart well she didnt die like that,, and liz did not take to dudley to well in history after his i wife passed .. so again.. movie makers make way too much of bull shit instead of the true power that liz was.. it seems they would rather her be a silly little wantabe whore instead of the monarch she was.. and of course as we see . they use a very goodlooking actor to portray dudley (and dudley was a cute little sissy) in order to get silly little girls to believe and continue the lie.
@kingslegion1 yes... the power of cinema - it's all about what will keep the audience's attention. Making her a "silly little wantabe whore" keeps attention of little girls and boys alike. I agree with you.
i really cannot watch any more.. i glad the other 82 liked it .. but i think this is the WORST rendition of a strong woman that i have ever seen.. dudly was a dandy and a fop at best,, this is a suck of a show
" I will have on mistress here! And no master do you hear me? I will have no man rule over me! " I took that to heart and made a decision in my life........
I just realized...the actress that plays Amy Dudley also played Georgiana Darcy in the 1995 version of Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth. I knew she looked familiar!
How could someone so stupid believe such bullshit? I can bet you those reports came from Spain or France which doesnt give them much credibility. Elizabeth was a mayor flirt, doesnt mean she slept with everyone she flirted with. FURTHER MORE.. Elizabeth never had any privacy , she was always accompanied by her ladies, so do tell me, how could she have pulled off these affairs?
The records to which I reffered are letters from the spanish ambassador to the King of Spain, which are the most explicit and accusative. Dubious parts of the diary of sir Francis Drake, exchanged communication between the Earl of Essex - in which he claims he has an edge to play with the Queen´s favour - and an Irish rebel (don´t remember the name). Not to mention the spy web reports that Mary of Scotts sent to contact France, Spain and Rome. And the duke of Anjou
Besides, as you well put "Elizabeth never had any privacy , she was always accompanied by her ladies". So it is not a coincidence that the spanish ambassador cited those same ladies rumours regarding her stepfather and Robert Dudley. Besides Anjou, the duke of Norfolk ALSO regreted the intimacy Dudley enjoyed. And Drake judged unfair the attention sir Walter Raleigh had and resented it.
@LadySarahMichelle i think her most trusted ladies would make arrangements for her when she really wanted someone and would stand watch outside the queens chambers to warn if they were about to be interrupted.
@Jamestopboy Don't fool yourself she had men when she wanted them. Others may gossip but she had the power of life and death in the end. She was a queen and not subject to re election.
i really do feel sorry for dudleys wife and i dont think she did it in spite i think she truly loved him and he showed no remorse, i think thats sick of a man to act like that, also i dont think dudley even loved the queen cos then why was he having an affair also with one of the ladies in waitin girls?! I think he was just after 'the thrill of the chase' with a woman!
Answer to question 1: When she said "I will have but one mistress here", she was referring to herself. Put simply, What she meant was, "I'm going to be the only boss around here."
Answer to question 2: Technically, Elizabeth could have named anyone as her successor, but has she named someone without a direct link to the throne, either through blood or marriage (like Robert), then that person would have been Lord Protector, rather than King.
Htrix is right. Elizabeth meant she wasn't going to allow ANY male to dominate her right to rule, no matter WHO he was. If she had married anyone, they would have the title King Consort but by the rites of Marriage, the man is dominant over his wife, so HE would rule, not her. Think about her sister...Mary gave Philip the title King Consort of England. He was one main cause for all of the burnings and she happily 'obliged'. As for heirs- Elizabeth's 'heir' ended up being Mary Queen of Scots' son!
I wonder if Amy knew that her death would damage his good name forever, and would separate him once and for all from Elizabeth. maybe that's what she wanted...either that or she wanted to end the physical and emotional pain she was in
She was lonely, ill and her husband was cheating on her with another woman, if not in body then in mind. I think she really loved him, but couldn't bear his infidelity. I don't think she did it out of spite.
It isnt actually knwon if she did kill herself or not, whether it was an accident, suicide, murder, or not we will never know, but she did have a pretty miserable life you cant blame her - imadgine all the rumours she would have heard about her husband
I have read a few biographies on Elizabeth and Dudley which theorize (per modern medical experts) that judging from symptoms described by Tudor doctors Amy suffered from undiagnosed breast cancer (obviously in Tudor times there was no treatment other than I believe amputation). When left to run it's course it seems the cancer can invade the bones and make them very brittle-thus Amy's fall caused her neck to be easily broken.
It's hard to know what was going through Amy's mind. Maybe she did or she didn't. I know when Elizabeth went riding out one day,she eerily said to the Spanish Ambassador that 'Robert's wife was dying or would soon be dead' literally a week before Amy died. That little comment nearly cost her more than it did Robert because it looked as if SHE ordered Amy's death. It was the BIGGEST controversial death, and it is STILL being looked at.I don't think Elizabeth would've REALLY done it,but who knows?
Sh eculdnt really accept Philip, that would have made it the same situation as Hnery's marriage to Catherine of Aragon, and if she married Philip that would in affect mean that she must accept that her father's first marriage was validwhich in my opinion it was) thus technially declaring herself a bastard, so you cant really blame her for not accpeting
I have really enjoyed this movie. The first three episodes through part 4 are posted on Youtube. Any word as to when the rest will be available? I'm dying to see the end!
actually Hugh Dancy played a completly different part. he was Robert Devereux the earl of essex, Robert Dudleys stepson! Jeremy Irons played Dudley in Helen Mirrens version.
A mystery surrounds the death of Amy: some say suicide as portrayed here, others say she had a tumour (which is also suggested here), but then some say Elizabeth's agents or Robert's agents. I guess we'll never know.
No, of course not. Like most of the apocrypha attached to Elizabeth I - and there is plenty - the best part of it is speculative. This particular series is especially "dramatic" with the facts (although not nearly as bad as the Cate Blanchett films), so whatever you see should not be taken at face value.
It does seem that they have based most of the film around sources from the time period, whether the sources were objective (i.e. accurate or not). They rest they leave to speculation, but fairly level-headed speculation nonetheless.
So beautiful :) she should have married him, stopped the bloody stuarts from coming in!

1. when she said 'i shall have but one mistress and no master...did she mean a male mistress? '
2. was she allowed to name anyone to be her successpr? like she chose rob dudley...if she had died.. could he hve become king?'
