Why are they facing away from the seats in an empty auditorium?

String Quartets were intended to be performed for the enjoyment of the musicians, similar to what we would consider a game of cards. I imagine that the concert hall was used for recording purposes but the fact that they're facing one another and playing for their own enjoyment is an accurate depiction of the composer's intentions.
