@robertherdman yes, but you have to get the boring downhill bit out the way before you can climb it. 2 minutes of boring downhill followed by 10 minutes of blissful climbing !!
I went down this on my bike yesterday for the first time, after cycling up Barber Booth/Mam Nick from Edale. Having now seen how insanely steep Winnats is, I can't believe that I've actually ridden UP it twice! I doubt that I'd have bothered trying to ride up it if I'd ridden down it first. BTW I didn't get above 20mph until after the car park at the cavern ...but I did get to 40 on the 'gentle' slope down into Castleton.
@taffboyslim It's madder going up, and there's usually a headwind.
Yes, people often expect the descent to be much quicker than it is. But with the narrow road, and constant traffic, the sweeping left hand bend is a bit dangerous. I'd like to get there early on day, get someone at the bottom with a walkie talkie and get the 'all clear' to go for it, i.e. spin out a 53x11 and see just how fast it's possible to go. But I wouldn't dare do anything like that normally !
I went down the "other side" of snake pass... that is a 9 mile long descent! Jesus.... it took about 15 or 20 minutes to go down and probably 2 or 3 hours to ride back up it. Mind, by the time I got to the top it was pitch black, no cars had passed me in hours, the top was really foggy, I was literally starving, not ate for 8 hours+... I swear to god it was almost like I was in heaven when I realized I don't have to pedal any more!
cmon guys, i think this looks safe but fun, its definitely fast enough, and if I wasnt sure what was around the corner (cars in middle of road perhaps) then I wouldnt be flying down it either. There's having fun and being safe, and bombing along and killing yourself. I know which one id choose. great vid EagleOfToledo - how did you attach the camera? Very still shot.
Great vid, brought many memms, one year as a kid, a copper passed me, then stopped me at the bottom, near the mines and told me off for going too fast.
@allthegear201 Exactly my thought. 50mph easily achievable.
Although a pal did fall off doing the edale side descent on the first sharp left hander in lycra shorts and tshirt.. Result was lots of missing flesh down his left hand side and a partially severed ear! All good fun though :D
Its all about going up it

This is a very difficult decent with cars all over the place and sharp turns.
Going down to fast is madness

Look forward to them. I think the other side - down into Edale - is a much more entertaining (well, terrifying!) descent.

Lame... slow. Did you even take your hands off the brakes?

Harsh, but fair ! 35mph isn't much for this. I have much better videos - just not got round to putting them up yet...

Yeah... is a little slow... I went down at least that quick on my snowboard a few winters back.
Although it is quite deceptively steep... the video doesn't do it justice.
There are loads of way better off road decents in the area.
