this reminded me, i went to the local pub where without knowing ritchie kozten was playing a gig there, so it came as quite a shock when he came out of the toilet cubical i was waiting at!

@6ozzman6metalfan6 just because you're asking you obviously know nothing about guitar skills...C.C. wrote great songs and beautiful solos but he's really an untalented guitarist..he's playing is most of the time out of tune...RICHIE KOTZEN,well he's just one of the top players ever born....
@6ozzman6metalfan6 In my opinion, Kotzen is the best. @artimusbill I lived in Reading, Pa for a while during the early years of Poison and I remember seeing Richie play with them then he went back to his solo career. Fantastic guitar player.
Richie wrote this song (with additional writing from Brett & the band) and Richie plays the Dobro, mandolin, Strat, acoustic guitar, BG vocals just on this song alone (as well as the Native Tongue album.) Everything about this song and album just was such an amazing, purposeful evolution for Poison, with soul, R&B, funk vibes..maybe Richie only was on this one album..but he made it count. One of my favorite songs & albums, ever.
This is also one of my all time favorite videos. What a flawlessly directed and shot concept piece of visual art that perfectly speaks the soul of & voices this immense song. Every nuance of this song, and video are sublime, so uplifting..it just soars and raises your soul.
It's a shame that one of their most powerful, best, great feeling songs happened when mainstream didn't care about Poison anymore. This song is universal lyrically and musically sounds great. It has that slow burn feel at times, but keeps you locked in. So thank you Poison, for such an awesome song.
Ok so Kotzen is a good guitar player, but I feel that he sounds falls into a bowl of other guitarists sounds. what I mean is that you couldn't pick out his sound. CC's raw talent was original and overpowering at times, but he could make a guitar do pretty much whatever he wanted it to. sorry, probably not a great opinion, but it's mine all the same.
No doubt, "Native Tongue" was Poison's best, most mature album...it's a crying shame that the genre was dying when Kotzen joined the band and that his stay with them was short-lived because his sound definietly influenced Poison in a good way. The failure of Kotzen with Poison is one of rock's tragedies. And BTW...mainstream music sucks in every single category today. So fake and you know it.
@xraycat30 Wonderfully stated. The only Poison album I bought & have worn out, just sublime songwriting, musicianship, mostly directly due to Richie Kotzen's artistry & more purposeful, artistic influence on the band..taking them from a sexist party band..to a serious, contemplative group who crafted socially consious and stunning music. Every song on this album is amazing but "Stand" is breathtaking & beyond transcendent..right down to the arrangement with the AME Gospel Choir.
@arweiss100 Agreed. I also like "Until you suffer some". Another song with such a heavy Kotzen influence. Sorry to say it but Richie puts C.C. right out of business. And hell yeah....Poison with Kotzen wasn't even the same band...it was a step above.
@sis729 I agree with you that CC did "fit" the band...but with Kotzen...this band actually could have become better. Their sound was so much better with Kotzen.
I think Richie Kotzen was the best that happenend in Poison music. This guy made their sound become a lot more mature. It's sad that we hear it on only one LP.
people have to realise that at that point in 1993, poison had to have someone like richie, this wasn't he 80's anymore. they needed respect and becoming musicians rather than just throwing party songs for the sake of image and stuff. though nirvana and grunge were flying high in 1993 era, poison managed to be known and respected by a lot of true hard core true musician fans, even the glam thing was already vanishing. i strongly believed if still they had cc on 1993, they would have sunk totally.
True. CC does fit the bands vibe much better and yes, Richie is a league above all of the guys in the band as far as pure musical talent. That doesn't take away from what they've written with CC though.
that cant be true, Poison sold 30 millions. But that shit truly does not matter, If your going for what everbody else thinks Britney Spears or 50 cent should be a safer bet.
Would have been better without Richie Kotzen. I dont like him one bit. He looks to gay. He should have played guitar with elton john or George Michael instead.
co-wrote. Im impressed by Kotzens guitar playing but I still think he is ubergay and not a rock n roller. There is one recorded live concert with poison and Kotzen. Watch it and listen to his solos on the C.C songs. His solos just dont fit in, not the guitar sound either.
@ballefjongm yea i bet it dont fit as the original stand Richie wrote was altered a bit by Brett..and Richie is more R&B,bluesy player and just as every bit of a good singer as Brett if not better, but we all have our taste i guess, when they hired Richie they wanted a song writer and they got one,he wasn't another hired gun..this is when Fender made a Richie signature series Tele also..and Richie was done with pyrotechnics on guitar he was done with shrapnel and said why not to Brett .its a fact
poison has alot of talent if they didnt have talent they would have got signed and they did yeah they like to party but they have to have enough talent to do that and i agree they arent no randy rhoads or steve vai but they are good enough to get their songs remember by everyone i mean everyone knows talk dirty to me, i want action, every rose has its thorn, and nothin but a good time
95% of teens these days listen to the same crappy pop songs over and over. if your one of the 5% left who still listen to real music, thunb this up, then copy and paste it to least 5 video's. DONT LET THE SPIRIT OF ROCK&ROLL DIE
@iamatroll112 Beatles, The Rolling Stones was the same bullshit that Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers, the time elvoves. Stop think in the past, it doesnt make you mature. It only makes you stupid.
@iamatroll112 the spirit of rock and roll will never die, craps playing youth are now going to happen as they always do, rock and roll will never die!
@jasper1414 How does someone "cheat" with someone's ex? I'm sure she was some else's ex before Rikki hooked up with her. And, I'm sure if there was any cheating going on, it was likely Rikki cheating on her - while they were still together. You think he wasn't banging a new chick in every town while they were together. Kotzen went on to marry the chick and had a kid with her. A bit more serious of a relationship than just a one-night-stand.
kotzen 's an amazing player, cc is decent for what he did and i think suits the band more..just like crue tried to replace vince, and van halen with hagar, eric singer with peter criss,..you can't replace the originals, no matter how mediocre their abilities are...when the fans speak, watch out, because they rule and decide the fate of all artists and bands !!
kotzen was never considered a true member of poison..just a hired gin slinger, shredder to make cc look like a beginner..they were all disgruntled at this point and CC was flying on drugs and booze, and couldn't get his act together, so they gave him the boot,.which is ironic, because CC formed this band..
Native Tongue is still my favorite Poison album! I still have the cd in my suv...lol on the hap chance I leave my ipod at home. The level that Richie brought that band to was enormous.
Brets voice is cool as hell on this tune, This song brings be back to the mid 90's when I was like 5 lol, Poison was the ONLY band I listened to back then
This was the start of the era that I like to call "The lost era of Hair Metal." A lot of the CDs that were released around this time were far superior to their 80s hits. Poison, Slaughter, and Def Leppard all released CDs in the 90s that were freakin' awesome.
@JetFireROCKS1 I agree. Def Leppard has missed something since Steve Clark. I like Slang because it was Def Leppard trying something new. I think Steve Clark balanced the metal and the pop sides of the band. Vivian Campbell, despite playing in Dio and Whitesnake, I believe leans towards the pop side of music.
I heard this ONE time ever on radio, and ran out and bought the CD I was so moved by this song alone..Incredible..I agree it has a wonderful message, beautiful and meaningful lyrics and music, stunning arrangement and showcased a true artistic evolution of what was a party band...mostly due to Richie..to a musically rich ensemble of eloquent substance..made this their best song..and the entire album is outstanding as well. This album should have sold truckloads..
I remember vividly seeing this vid on it's MTV premier in Jan or Feb, '93 at the height of shitty grunge. This album didn't sell all that well compared to their three previous ones, but this is one of my all time fave songs by Poison and by ANYONE!! Just a great song w/beautiful lyrics and a great message.
Ricki's engagement with the chick fell apart 3-4 months before Richie hooked up with her. And, I'm sure Ricki never banged any other dudes wife, mother, sister, or fiance....
CC is better for Poison, because Poison is just supposed to be a fun, party band - Not a musicians bands. But as far as talent, Richie is far superior to any of the guys in Poison. He blows Bret away on vox, and blows Bobby away on bass.
And Britney Spears has had more hits than Poison with studio pitch corrected vocals and lip syncing at every concert. Does that make her the better "artist"?
@Rootwitch06 Disagree, C.C. is a hell of a guitarist, His solos aren't easy.
Richie is a phenomenal talent but Poison didn't make it because they threw parties. their music is party music but its loaded with talent on top of it.
@TigertailzBezerk Seriously bro? I mean,... you're a Randy Rhoads fan, so you know what talent sounds like. I won't go as far as saying CC's solos are beginner material - It requires SOME talent, but his playing has no depth, maturity, feel, etc. It's just fun and silly. Bobby just plays root notes and can't sing, and Brett sings everything sharp, and can play about 5 chords on guitar. When I think of talented bands, I don't think of Poison. They're a party band. Nothing more.
@Rootwitch06 lol, I know what your saying. I apologize
His solo in life goes on has alot of feel to it though.
I just cant stand seeing him getting dissed in every guitar magazine out, Thats what really gets to me, When they rate him a 0 I think thats ridiculious. Poison were the band that started it for me, But I went on to stuff like Ozzy,Dokken,Ratt etc.... Poison arent my fav anymore....But they hold a sentimental place and I still dig their music.
@Rootwitch06 agreed..they have maybe 3 good tunes and it aint off their bullshit debut LP either..haha..and folks cant blame Richie for screwin the drummers ole lady she prolly came onto him anyway..lol..fuckin ho..Richie wrote this song 2 years before poison asked him to join thats asked!..lol.people have no clue its just comical..
@ltuomela People don't know the facts. Rikki and his chick were broken up for about 3 months, and come on... Rikki was probably banging other dudes wives the whole time they were together... But they were broken up for months, Richie and her started dating, Richie stepped up and told Rikki (even though he didn't have to) and they kicked him out. They were probably just pissed because Richie was getting ALL the chicks, and he didn't (and still doesn't) have to wear a wig.
@Rootwitch06 Though I can't really say either is a better talent than the other - they're both amazing in their own rights - I definitely agree that CC is better for Poison. Some of their best songs were written with no small amount of effort from CC himself, if memory serves right.
RIP 80's :(

@gollywogcum181 well ur precious kotzen may have but he cheated with one of rikki's ex's so HE SUCKS!!!!
jasper1414 1 year ago
@jasper1414 How does someone "cheat" with someone's ex? I'm sure she was some else's ex before Rikki hooked up with her. And, I'm sure if there was any cheating going on, it was likely Rikki cheating on her - while they were still together. You think he wasn't banging a new chick in every town while they were together. Kotzen went on to marry the chick and had a kid with her. A bit more serious of a relationship than just a one-night-stand.

lol...CC did not start Poison. He's not even an original member. Matt Smith came with them from Pennsylvania. God help me for actually knowing that.

every fucking poison's video with kotzen is the same shit...
cc is better
no, kotzen is better...
but cc is more suitable for Poison
oh, richie's got more talent
blablablablablabla
digoloooo 1 year ago
kotzen 's an amazing player, cc is decent for what he did and i think suits the band more..just like crue tried to replace vince, and van halen with hagar, eric singer with peter criss,..you can't replace the originals, no matter how mediocre their abilities are...when the fans speak, watch out, because they rule and decide the fate of all artists and bands !!
blica1 1 year ago
kotzen was never considered a true member of poison..just a hired gin slinger, shredder to make cc look like a beginner..they were all disgruntled at this point and CC was flying on drugs and booze, and couldn't get his act together, so they gave him the boot,.which is ironic, because CC formed this band..

Brets voice is cool as hell on this tune, This song brings be back to the mid 90's when I was like 5 lol, Poison was the ONLY band I listened to back then
TigertailzBezerk 1 year ago
This was the start of the era that I like to call "The lost era of Hair Metal." A lot of the CDs that were released around this time were far superior to their 80s hits. Poison, Slaughter, and Def Leppard all released CDs in the 90s that were freakin' awesome.
Poison - Native Tongue
Slaughter - Fear No Evil
Warrant - Ultraphobic
Def Leppard - Retroactive and Slang
batmanjwo 1 year ago 2
@batmanjwo I have all those CD's and they are even better today.. To bad they were so over looked.

@batmanjwo
That Def Leppard album wasn't nearly as good as the 80's, and you wanna know why? because in the 80's they had STEVE CLARK
JetFireROCKS1 1 year ago

This album should have sold truckloads..
arweiss100 1 year ago 2
I remember vividly seeing this vid on it's MTV premier in Jan or Feb, '93 at the height of shitty grunge. This album didn't sell all that well compared to their three previous ones, but this is one of my all time fave songs by Poison and by ANYONE!! Just a great song w/beautiful lyrics and a great message.

what happened with Ritchie and Poison?
AstorSkywalker 2 years ago
Ritchie was fucking Ricki Rockett's fiancé. When Brett found out, he literally kicked him out of the band.
arodz21 2 years ago
Ricki's engagement with the chick fell apart 3-4 months before Richie hooked up with her. And, I'm sure Ricki never banged any other dudes wife, mother, sister, or fiance....
Rootwitch06 2 years ago
I agree that Richie is a monster technically, but CC had all the charisma. I love them both, thanks for posting this song :)

CC deville blows Richie Kotzen away...By Far...CC is a Guitar God!!!
hydraIX 2 years ago
CC is better for Poison, because Poison is just supposed to be a fun, party band - Not a musicians bands. But as far as talent, Richie is far superior to any of the guys in Poison. He blows Bret away on vox, and blows Bobby away on bass.
Rootwitch06 2 years ago 26
Who cares... they made more memorable music with CC.
RebelliousHutterite2 2 years ago
And Britney Spears has had more hits than Poison with studio pitch corrected vocals and lip syncing at every concert. Does that make her the better "artist"?
Rootwitch06 2 years ago 41
@Rootwitch06 Well was youtube out back then? HELLO!!!
PopCulture20 8 months ago
@PopCulture20 I don't understand what YouTube has to do with the debate. Please explain...
Rootwitch06 8 months ago
i agree that CC is better for Poison, but not that Poison is not for musicians. Theyre all musicians. Richie just doesnt fit in with them.
sweatpoopoo 2 years ago 2
@Rootwitch06
Yeah I agree,.,...richie blows most of the musicians around both on guitars and vocals....
fluttergirl77 1 year ago
@Rootwitch06 Disagree, C.C. is a hell of a guitarist, His solos aren't easy.
Richie is a phenomenal talent but Poison didn't make it because they threw parties. their music is party music but its loaded with talent on top of it.
TigertailzBezerk 1 year ago
@TigertailzBezerk Seriously bro? I mean,... you're a Randy Rhoads fan, so you know what talent sounds like. I won't go as far as saying CC's solos are beginner material - It requires SOME talent, but his playing has no depth, maturity, feel, etc. It's just fun and silly. Bobby just plays root notes and can't sing, and Brett sings everything sharp, and can play about 5 chords on guitar. When I think of talented bands, I don't think of Poison. They're a party band. Nothing more.
Rootwitch06 1 year ago
@Rootwitch06 lol, I know what your saying. I apologize
His solo in life goes on has alot of feel to it though.
I just cant stand seeing him getting dissed in every guitar magazine out, Thats what really gets to me, When they rate him a 0 I think thats ridiculious. Poison were the band that started it for me, But I went on to stuff like Ozzy,Dokken,Ratt etc.... Poison arent my fav anymore....But they hold a sentimental place and I still dig their music.
TigertailzBezerk 1 year ago
@Rootwitch06 agreed..they have maybe 3 good tunes and it aint off their bullshit debut LP either..haha..and folks cant blame Richie for screwin the drummers ole lady she prolly came onto him anyway..lol..fuckin ho..Richie wrote this song 2 years before poison asked him to join thats asked!..lol.people have no clue its just comical..
ltuomela 1 year ago
@ltuomela People don't know the facts. Rikki and his chick were broken up for about 3 months, and come on... Rikki was probably banging other dudes wives the whole time they were together... But they were broken up for months, Richie and her started dating, Richie stepped up and told Rikki (even though he didn't have to) and they kicked him out. They were probably just pissed because Richie was getting ALL the chicks, and he didn't (and still doesn't) have to wear a wig.
Rootwitch06 1 year ago
@Rootwitch06 yep thats a fact man...its funny how folk just run their mouths and have no clue..lol
ltuomela 1 year ago
But what he does'nt is blow Ricky Rocket. And besides hes an ashole who fucked bobbys fiance.
Hes really good but as far as im concerned hes not one bit rock n roll and got almoust zero charisma
ballefjongmanne 1 year ago
@Rootwitch06 Though I can't really say either is a better talent than the other - they're both amazing in their own rights - I definitely agree that CC is better for Poison. Some of their best songs were written with no small amount of effort from CC himself, if memory serves right.
Kelvari7882 10 months ago
The musically richest song Poison ever recorded, period. Richie gave them serious credibility. Love the organic, soulful sound.
