@seevert7225 While I agree with your comment, the woman is correct is some aspects. The HUMMER isn't supported by Whelen or SWPS and needs to have the emergency lights custom fabricated into the car which is expensive. Furthermore, all the custom vinyls and paint work done on the HUMMER also costs quite a bit of money. Also, the LAPD has to may VERY expensive insurance on this car for each LEO that drives it because it is not a federally approved emergency vehicle. So, this car is expensive.

@seevert7225 The lady in this video is absolutely right to lambaste the LAPD for driving this Hummer. In case you don't know, the city of Los Angeles is facing an unprecedented budget shortfall. If the city is confiscating luxury vehicles from criminals, they should auction them off and hire more officers. This vehicle is nothing but a gas-guzzling ego machine (both literally and figuratively) for an understaffed department.

According to what I've read, it's illegal for police in CA to seize property from criminals and then appropriate it for their own uses. Even if this Hummer had been taken from a drug dealer, the entire idea of a luxury car being used as a police recruitment vehicle is laughable. The type of recruit who is impressed by fancy cars is the last person you want working the streets as a police officer. People don't become police officers to get rich, they do it to help others.

@The818211187 Actually they can seize property. How do you think that they acquire evidence? You ever here of police auctions? They sell seized property all the time and perhaps they come across a vehicle that they would rather not sell. Perhaps they figure they can get more out of it using it as a tool rather than an item for sale.

@The818211187 Any property that was obtained illegally will not be given back (i.e. purchased with drug money). They may destroy the property, sell it, or USE it for the department. they cant keep just anything but if it was seized because it was obtained illegally then yes they can

Do you LIVE in LA? LAPD is useless. They are only there when your grandmother rolls through a stop sign. Our friend got stabbed at a restaurant and we called the cops....they never even showed up. I support Paramedics and firefighters. Most cops got all "Cs" in high school and never went to college. They should have the power that cops have with such little intelligence..

Your right we had shitty cops where i live then they started having high school grade requirements and a few college classes plus its real easy to get fired for misbehavior and as a result crime became lower.
NOW i actually trust the cops in my town and most are good honest cops.
LA is famous for having shitty cops though.

its just a recruting tool really. If you look at the side of it is now hiring. From a policing point of view and gas mileage point of view driving this thing around wouldn't be very safe and would cost the department a lot on gas mileage. Is cool though.

It's a recruiting tool for LAPD. LAPD parks it in high traffic areas, and you tend to notice it more than a regular black and white 'vic. Note the advertisements for their recruiting website on the back. It's not outfitted for patrol use...

Could be government funded, but a lot of the time the company 'Hummer' donate the car to police as a free advertisement. Happens a lot with more exotic vehicles.

I doubt tha the LAPD purchaced this, it was most likely a confiscated vehicle that was converted into a police vehicle, pretty common occurance.

Personally I love hummers, im not very environmental anyways and if you have money to spend and want a car that your not gonna have to pay for when you get in an accident, hummers a great deal. One of em saved my friends life, he was recently in a head on crash with a drunk driver coming from the 99 pub in littleton New Hampshire. No one was seriously injured. But the safety of those hummers are phenomenal, all around great car in my book :D

There is also quite few hummers and a lambo in Florida, all of them confiscated from criminals. Most confiscated cars are sold in auctions but they decided to keep few nice ones for publicity.

It doesn't look professional. The Crown Victoria radiates Law and Order, that's why its a good police car. This Hummer says "Banana Republic PD", not LAPD. I guess things changed since Gates is not the chief.

There's 3 LAPD Hummers and they're mostly used for publicity, recruting and school visits etc....
They were ALL confiscated from convicted criminals.
The only cost was for the mod's and that's usually covered by donations....

It's not that the police have "money" to spend on new police cars, most police department's recieve grants and just pay the diffrence, like in my very small town, they recieved a 28,000 grant and there buying a dodge charger, and the town is only paying out about 3,000 for the car
