  • I still say that the USS Washington should have NEVER been scrapped. She needed to be saved and preserved for her actions in WW2

  • What happened to NC between the end of WW2 and her coming to Wilmington?

  • Proud to be a North Carolinian with a great vessel as BB-55

  • South Dakota class was way better than North Carolina

  • Tanksoldier,

check your youtube account, I don't think anybody knows it's us!...friggin hilarious.Oh I got your email confused....shoot me the new one.

  • @DrifterRise not completely true... the british had the battleships nelson and rodney, which had 16-inch guns.

  • @battingriver No offense but fuck off

(Actaully damn that i meant offense)

  • @battingriver commercials make youtube free :D

  • If you really want to "wet your shorts"..Look up the 'Montana Class',never built...

  • see, the guns on the ships back then where so big that there was a tready that limited there hugeness. Now and days they get smaller, WHY?

I dont want a small 20 round brust of small shells, I want a BIG ASS SHELL X3 fired.

  • * Top ten American fighting ships

  • i am amazed howmany amarican ships are in this matrix .. id could think up a dozen or so other class of ships that should be in this and are not american made... they should make a matrix for the americans alone and leave the european navy ships out of this disaster that they call a matrix

  • @artacania Because:

    1. Britain and Japan never built good ships.

    2. America's battleships were the best.

    3. Russia and Japan built pig-shit.

    4. France was okay. :)!

    Keep bitching, grammarless!

  • @Tyco200 u dont even know what u talking about ....... get some book and read how many bomb and torpedo take to sunk a ijn heavy cruiser .... and i dont talk about a battleship

  • @Tyco200 Britain was the dominant sea power for 130 years. Trafalgar through to WWII. They established most of the tactics that were used in WWII, (Including using a carrier to attack Battleships) and should I remind you that all battleships made after 1910 are called dreadnoughts because HMS Dreadnought was so revolutionary that Naval Planners had to rewrite the book from scratch. If Japan's ships were so bad, then why did it take the US 4 years and far greater numbers to defeat them?

  • How the fuck is the Yamato not even on this?!?! It should be near the top! Fucking Patriots

  • whoa if japanese or kamekazi cheating at war,i will use these ship*eat my dust kamekazi!!*

  • THats when it used to be cool to be a sailor :(

  • vessel at 2:10 is a South Dakota class bb

  • "Never said No" Yeah.. say that when you're up against the yamato. The SoDak would be racing out of there to avoid the 18.1'' killers.

  • @AzyrenIshida Another segment of this show points out that the U.S. 15" guns of the time hit almost as hard as the Japanese 18" guns. I'd guess A South Carolina's 16" guns would have been at least a fair match, and our fire control was better. That matched against a Yamato's thicker armor could have meant an even match.

  • the bismark had the best shooting record among all battleships. i think it would have beaten the yamato in a gun-to-gun duel. the only BB that could possibly outclass it durign the war was the iowa.

  • they were both test beds for the iowa class battle ships

  • i wish south dakota and north coralina would have tied

  • I understand the criteria - by which Americans and their stooge are the "top ten in the world bla-bla-bla" estimate!

    1. How much crap one's pants at the sight of the enemy

    2. Power farting crew

    3. Number of toilets

    4. Thickness of fat at the commander

    5. Quantity of hamburgers onboard

In this the United States and the first places all the time! (Only T-34(and AK-47) on the real merits had to admit) If you compare this to the technical criteria and their effectiveness - really suck ...

  • @silvermitriy - How much crap one's pants at the sight of the enemy - Tell that to George Patton - he hated the Russians, he'd sooner kill them than the Krauts. Also without American lend lease help in WW2, Russia would have lost to the Nazis. No doubt about it!!

  • @bluebelly07 ur rigth thumbs up

  • North Carolina class gets a spot in the top ten, but not the South Dakota class? This is BS. South Dakota was superior to North Carolina. In fact, the South Dakota class was designed to replace the North Carolina class. The people who make this series are idiots.

  • @AlabamaSoldier i don't understand your reasoning. the North Carolina was a brand-new class when we entered the war. it's mentioned in countdowns like this because of it's decoration in battle, the most decorated US battleship of the war deserves a top ten anyday in my book.

  • @StevewiththePbass That's good thinking, except that half the ships in the countdown were scarcely known and that the South Dakotas were designed specifically to replace the North Carolinas. They had several engineering improvements at almost no sacrifices, and they were smaller, making them harder to hit. They were practically a redesign of the North Carolinas. The ship classes were almost completely identical. The only thing they have on the South Dakotas is service length.

  • @AlabamaSoldier

From what ive read, the North Carolinas were designed to resist 14inch shells (american design that a vessel to be able to withstand a hit by a shell of the same size as its own guns). at the last moment they changed the weapons from 14 to 16inch but without changing the level of protection. So the North Carloinas were only designed to withstand 14inch shells

  • The South Dakota's were designed to withstand to withstand 16inch shells, but keeping to the Washington treaty limits. So the New class had to make many compromises, they were shorter, more cramped and slightly slower than the North Carolinas

  • @notsureyou The NCs immunity zone for 16" gunfire was only 21,000-26,000yds which was considered inadequate. Her area for 14" gunfire was 19,000-30,000yds. So, you're correct. Under the Washington Treaty they were allowed to 16" guns; the London Treaty only allowed 14" guns. Both limited tonnage to 35,000 tons standard displacement. They weren't able to add any more armor without going over on weight. Lessons they learned from NC allowed them to make the South Dakotas with better protection.

  • @AlabamaSoldier The South Dakotas were not designed to "replace" the North Carolina. There were design changes that came from lessons learned from the NC. They were superior in many ways, with better deck armor and fields of fire for her 5"guns. Her underwater protection was considered by many to be inferior, learned after the NC's torpedo hit. Also, I have spoken to former South Dakota sailors who said they were very cramped, while the NC was considered roomy which helps with fatigue & morale.

  • @AlabamaSoldier The North Carolin's as the first of the New Generation of BB's arrived early enough to be compared to the German, British, french, Japanese and Italian BB's. Aginst these the N.C.'s Had larger guns than all but the Yamato and better radar fire control than the Japanese, Italian and French which had none. Only the British KGV's and German Bismark's were in any way comparable in terms of fire control, speed, fire power and armor.

  • @scottduncan44 Do a little research. The South Dakotas were commissioned to replace the North Carolinas. They were more compact and had a slight speed advantage. Armaments, protection, and sensors were virtually identical.

  • @AlabamaSoldier The North Carolina's were the closest contemporaries with the other third generation B.B.'s The North Carolina also saw more Battle action than the Souht Dakota's and Iowa's. This is called the top ten fighting ships. So in my mind ships that did not fight effectivly like the Bismark and Yamamoto's don't count. I do not base my opinion on technical merits but fighting history.

  • damn ads!!!!!!

  • The BB-55 North Carolina got the highest amount of battle stars (15) during WWII, than any other ship.

  • American inginuity BITCHES

and by the way are people really that

fucking retarded. that would be you dumbass people who can't spell.

  • the only thing American inginuity is able to build on a comparable level to the rest of the world is weapons, everything more complicated than a fridge you guys import today.

A single idiot was able to black out half of the US not to long ago, by doin somthing that stupid, id be whipped in the parking slots for doin.

Seriously, American inginuity .... gimme an example of todays world that dosnt involve lockheed, and where your not outmatched by that other place, called the world

  • lol, you make me laugh... You are an ignoramus.

  • It's funny how people fight about religion and talks about WWII Military tech. I wonder how would it do against the Bismarck Class of Germany.

  • Well she could fire Her rounds at a distance further than the bismarck class. This class reached speeds of 27knots and could run with carriers something battle ships before could not do. Her fire control computers were the best of there time. So the bismarck would have been out classed. All so young man I know this first hand not by reading a book or watching tv program, My Father spoke of Her often since he served on her in WW II.

  • I know that each one has yours trade. Excuse I prefer to sell life!!!! And to have my relieved conciencia! Nevertheless that GOD arranges a place for you! It is sad.... Excuse! Jorge Ferreira Sei que cada um tem o seu comercio. Desculpe eu prefiro vender vida!!!! E ter minha conciencia aliviada! Ainda assim que DEUS arrume um lugar para vocês! É triste.... Desculpe! Jorge Ferreira
  • so what if she only served during WW II BB-55 "Showboat" was still one of the most decorated ships during her career

  • And yamato did manage to have a couple of gunfights against other ships.

  • Isn't this a Video about the North Carolina not the Yamamoto? By the way the Ship (NC) was built so well you can still go see it today ; ).

  • @pirculator Fuck you and your ticket too.

  • Yamato would kill that sorry white boy shit.

  • Please Yamato could not sink an ESCORT DESTROYER. A Yamato class battleship would be sent to DAVY JOHNS LOCKER. Against an Iowa class battleship! Hooah!

  • You're an idiot. Just because Iowa class is American made doesn't mean it's better. That's just sheer stupidity on your part.

  • Of Course because a military machine is made in America it is gonna be better because its just that great American Enginuity! thats just common sense Dumbass! XP

  • You can't even spell ingenuity correctly, let alone string together a coherent argument. I thought you might ATTEMPT a rationale argument, but you didn't even bother. You just made yourself look even stupider than before. Thanks, you saved me the trouble of making a fool out of you.

  • THAT WAS A FUCKIN TYPO STUPID DICKWAD! JESUS CHRIST YOUR AS ANNOYING AS A FUCKING FIVE YEAR OLD, and i have a better chance of beating you in any rationale any fucking day of any fucking year bitchass mother fucking shithead. Your just a loser who likes to pick fights in the comments section because YOU HAVE NO LIFE! but hears some news for you fuckhead I DO! SO THANKS FOR Ruining the video! END OF STORY AND BURN IN THE LOWEST LEVELS OF HELL WHEN YOU DIE! GOOD DAY!

    PS: FU-A11 131TC1-1ES ):-P

  • Nice job embarrassing yourself even further. Oh and hell doesn't exist, and neither does god. You believe in fairytales for adults. Have a nice day.

  • Wow know wonder your such a dickwad what you say to me just now says what kind of person you are you uncitely abomination!

  • Apparently you can't even speak English correctly. Are you 12 or just retarded? Provide evidence that god exists or shut up.

  • You just confirmed your youth. I'm guessing 10 or 12 years of age.

  • @EnigmaHood lol ur funny the yamato was bigger yes and there 18 inch where out and outdated the 16 inch guns where newer and a better sheel and the north carolina had rader fire witch the yamato did not have

  • Lol and you're stupid. I'm sorry, but it's just difficult to take someone seriously when they don't know the difference between "where" and "were".

  • @EnigmaHood me stupid lol u realy funny ur the us had the best battleships in ww2 the yamato was buitl in the 30 and never really touched after it was built the north carolina was built in the 40s u need to get ur shit right

  • Didn't waste my time reading your incoherent post. Learn proper English.

  • @EnigmaHood but yet u wrote a reply funny man ur just a troll lol

  • *points and laughs at the incoherent troll*

    ^_^

  • @EnigmaHood right here y u answer me if aim such a dumass not worth ur time

  • To laugh at your incoherent posts stupid. :)

  • Actually the yamato boasted it's 18.1 inch guns not 18 inches.

  • and it also got sunk in at an unthinkable rate. at least im thinking thats teh MASSIVE battleship that japan had their flagship

  • She took more punishment than any other ship could handle. NC woud've sinked.

  • nice ships. they dominated the japaneese.

  • Oh my God my grandfather was on this ship haha. He has told me all this stories the torpedo strike and shooting planes outta the sky. Hmmm I never thought to look this up. I'm glad I did.

  • There was only one ship that boasted the biggest guns but never fulfilled its role. The Yamato class of the Japanese Imperial Navy had 18 inch guns.

  • as well as more armour than any other battleship

  • @jckrypton Actually there were two Yamato class battleships, the Yamato and the Musashi both with 18.1" guns

  • @jckrypton Actually the Yamatos had 18.1in guns. Other ships, such as the Furious, and a number of light cruisers also carried 18in guns.

  • @jckrypton

They Yamato couldn't fire a broadside because a broadside from guns like that would have overturned it.

  • @jckrypton

How far did it have to go to fire the damn things to be effective and not blow up they're ship as well.

  • @jckrypton The guns were impressive but massively innaccurate to the point of uselessness. The only time it sunk a ship was with it's smaller 5 inch. The guns on the later U.S. battleships were far more accurate and had almost the same penetration. Hitler believe it or ot wanted a battleship with 20" guns, but was carefully advised that such a ship would need to be over 1000 feet in length, completely beyond thier abilities at the time.

  • @scaryplague The "later" South Dakotas used the same 16" Mk6 guns as North Carolina. All US battleships starting with North Carolina up to the Iowas used the Mk38 gun director with either the Mk8 or Mk13 FD Radar and the Mk1A fire control computers. This system took into account many factors to plot a firing solution. Everything I've seen (including after action reports) & crew I've spoken to have said they were very accurate even past 30,000yds. And a 16" gun is a bit of overkill for a Maru.

  • is this the uss lasvegas oh scratch that wrong video sorry now where is a video about me lols:)

  • Typo.

The Kirishima was a recently rebuilt battlecruiser that had a full escort with it and had just annihilated the Washington and North Dakota's 4 escort destroyers. Sometimes the line between battleship and battlecruiser is hazy. It was heavier than some battleships.

Those two modern battleships, with the Dakota already damaged from previous fighting and her systems almost completely compromised (no radio or radar, several guns offline), were bold to engage superior numbers in that state.

  • God dang it, I did it again. South Dakota, not North Dakota. I've been staring at this screen doing legal paperwork too long.

  • Bulhcrap. only americans would believe that.

  • facts: old WWI british style armor, got a nice picture of Shinano (3rd Yamato)never used turret face and the great big hole the 2700 lb. 16inch blasted into it post war test......

add that amor on US Iowa class and she would be as heavy as Yamato but wasn't needed with superior steel used in her construction... helped push her speed into phenomenal range 33-35 knts... long range accuracy awesome ... close range fight only chance but Yamato to slow to do that...SPEED DICTATES range...

  • Actually, he does have a point with regards to the Iowa v. Yamato issue. The Iowa's guns were smaller, but sported better shell designs and far more accurate guns. It's likely that the Iowa would win if there was ever a true slugging match. Yamato was a white elephant throughout the war, and the material put into her would have been vastly better applied to naval aircraft or more carriers for the IJN.

  • Actually my mother was on the NC and killed hundreds of german nazi soliers sailors.

  • lol they were sworn to protect mother Germany and her leader, which made them all Nazis. That's just like saying that all American soldiers aren't American.

  • @rguitarash youre confusing national identity to political ...

  • @rguitarash Many of the Kreigsmarine was not Nazis just sailor

  • your a lair, the NC was purely used in the pacific far from the nazi's ontop of that no women servered on a battleship during ww2 and again no female soldiers so your a lair you little shit.

  • you liar shit. say that to my mother. she'd pull out her garand and pump 8 rounds into your testicles.

  • Comment removed

  • whats the REAL differnce? Pretty much the same thing. hood battlecruiser too.

  • The narrator never said that the Kirishima was a Battleship and of course it was Out Gunned, because the Kirishima had 14" guns compared to North Caorlina's 16" guns and on top of that, the Kirishima also didnt have Radar, but the North Carolina did.

  • giant battle cruisers aren't at a disadvantage with "battleships".

  • i understand that the difference is relatively small but

krirshima's armour was around HALF of the N.Carolina and with smaller 14in guns

bottom line ... the kirishima didn't stand a chance

  • USS Washington took on HIJMS Kirishima in the second naval battle of Guadalcanal in November 1942, not the battle of Savo Island.

  • The North Carolina made the list because it is the highest decorated battleship. It was in every conflict in the pacific during ww2. So saying the Dakota or the Massachussetts was better is a joke.

  • Decoration was based on how many battles it was present at and not how good the ship was.

  • They are still technologically better ships.

  • True, Kirishima was old. And on paper it was outclassed, but you still have to respect them. Not many battleships had better firepower - the Iowa's were tremendously expensive, so you didn't see very many BB's of their level.

As far as the rest of the world was concerned, 16" guns and up were the odd ones out. Everyone else was still sporting smaller guns on their pride and joys. Even the Brits stuck with 15" to the end. The Bismark was also only 15".

    The Kirishima was respectable.

  • indeed. also more beauty than iowas too.

  • @DrifterRise Actually, you forget the Nelsons and the unbuilt Lion classes. Vanguard was supposed to have 16in L45s, but they weren't ready, and so she was armed with 15in from one of the QE class. The US, Britain, and Japan all had modern BBs sporting 16in. The 15in was viewed as yesterdays weapon.

  • @Exmech2 Apologies, I wasn't trying to slight anyone. Comment text limits playing their part, for good or bad. I was only trying to indicate that there was a variety of designs out there, and that gun size should not automatically void any respect one should have concerning any of them. There's room for the courage, skill, and determination of people to turn anything into legend given opportunity.

  • @DrifterRise Actually it was Kirishima herself that gave the USS Washington, the 2nd N Carolina class, and South Dakota something to worry about. Had Washington not been present, S. Dakota just may have been lost.

  • @Exmech2 And there's the problem with these YouTube discussions. Somewhere in this top 10 I already mentioned that. If I recall correctly, the South Dakota was hardly in a fighting condition after her power grid went SNAFU. Few ship articles I've read mention as much human error as the South Dakota encountered (no disrespect intended). That both BB's had little in the way of escorts by then didn't help. So we agree it *could* have gone the other way.

  • @DrifterRise S. Dakota's captain decided not to fire on local control for fear of hitting Washington. Had S. Dakota been alone, she would have fired on Kirishima. However, the loss of her radar placed the advantage firmly with the Kirishima. The Japanese being well versed in night actions. This battle is one of the very few where a 14in gun would have had advantage over a 16in.

  • @DrifterRise HMS Nelson and Rodney both sported 9 16" guns and were commissioned in 1930 and 1927 respectively. (though both were compromised by Washington treaty terms). And the most modern British BB's at the start of the war (KG V's) sported 14" guns (though these were outclassed by their more successful 15" predecessors).

  • @utubeavenger2 Aye. There just isn't enough space in these comments to go all out. It's good and bad though. It cuts short some comments that need it. Where we can't fit in everything is when curious folks (us!) need to do some exploring and reading of their own :) . I didn't mean to slight anyone by leaving them out.

I'll tell you one more thing: I never dreamed the comment would get thumbed up so much. It's a shame responses like yours for the past year haven't been stickied to it :( .

  • You mother was obselet.

  • yea south dakotas were a bit better than these north carolinas

  • Put it this way the united states could smash even the royal navy in one day.

North Carolina and her sister rule!

  • Think all of the steel it takes to make the ships and then it sinks

  • Yamato should be #1.

  • South dakotas were rip offs from the south carolina class and ended up being a not so good ship. Carolina is one of the greats. sorry bud :/

  • The Show Boat (USS NORTH CAROLINA)was good but the BIG MAMMIE (USS MASSACHUSETTS) NEVER LOST A MAN!

  • over rated ships.

best american battleships during WW2 were the south dakotas.

    adequately armoured and armed.

the south carolinas carriedd inferior armour and the iowas were basically stretched south dakotas with improved speed but inferior armour to act has fast carrier escorts due to the fact the carriers were faster than all the other american battleships.

the montana class , which was cancelled to allow more carriers would have been the yamatos american opposites.

  • Can you write english.

  • I don't freakin belive these guys rated the NCarolina's as #6, and the Essex' as #8!!! Who the hell was making the decisions on this stuff?!?!

  • the Iowa class was far more superior anyway.

  • Well you used to... battleships are obsolete on the modern battlefield and are not in service nor built anymore. ;)

Germans and Japs built the biggest and most deadly ones, but as always in WW2 the US came up with the right overall strategy in conceptioning. See the sherman tanks - not really good at anything, but descent and nice to mass produce.

Im german btw. before anyone starts to mark me an ignorant american patriot. :D

  • the sherman did have its benefits such as gas consumption, speed, and the ability to easily repair it and battleships are not totally obselete the iowas were retrofitted with tomahawk missle launchers that with their 16 inch guns they are still a force to be reckoned with and the Americans during WW2 were going to build the Montana class Battleships which could have almost matched up with the Yamato and Bismarck. but yes the Japanese and Germans had the best battleships and German tanks

  • however I believe that if an Iowa went up against the Yamato it could win because of their radio controlled guns

  • did yamato even fire a shot? all i know is a torpedo hit it and they didnt close the watertight doors and it sank. this is what i heard, i dont know if its true or not

  • yeah in the battle of leyte gulf it fired but noone knows if it hit anything during that battle because it turned away early in the fight however on its way to okinawa it was attacked by over 350 carrier based planes and fired all its guns including the 18.1 inch rifles but was sunk.

  • No confirmed hits from her primary guns, but possibly some to her secondaries. In reality, the Iowa was vastly more dangerous than the Yamato, due to her centimeter wavelength fire control systems, radar, and the like. While her guns were not as big, the shell designs were better, and she was vastly more accurate. The vastly better AA defenses that the Iowa brings to a party doesn't hurt either.

  • I know thats what I was saying. I take it you know a lot about the navy . I don't know much about it I normally pay attention to land battles

  • I won't proclaim to be a professional, but I do try to study such things, as there's a long history of navy men in my family (old man was CPO in a boomer's engine room during Vietnam, while gramps and my great uncle were both on destroyers in WWII in the pacific theater). I do not entirely agree with everything listed in this series, though. The Bismarck for the most part, was a jalopy, and utterly inferior in all aspects to her British foes. She only sunk the Hood cause she got lucky.

  • yeah thats true alright, Prince of wales wasnt even working and still scored 3 critical hits!

  • It got chased away by little destroyers and destroyer escorts during leyte gulf. The japanese assumed they were fight battleships and panicked.

  • I know which is hillarious because Yamato weighed more than all American vessels in Leyte Gulf combined but it really got chased away by Americn air power even though they weren't equipped to attack surface ships

  • Yeah you're right. But what i meant was that the sherman didnt really excel at anything. Maybe speed. But its main advantage was that it was a clever choice in terms of overall war strategy, when german vehicles often excelled in tactical situations but just were too heavy on logistics and ressources.

  • and the sherman was never meant to fight against german tanks only to support infantry

  • but yeah your right it didn't excel it was just there

  • lol we can sure build the battleships
