My Father in law turns 100 in March. We are going to have a party for him and I would love for us all to sing this song to him. Do you know where I can get a copy of this clip to give to him? I can get the lyrics online but not this song sung by George Burns...a man of his generation.
I remember being 18 back in 1994 during my gap year after high school and watching the 1988 movie 18 again. The scene where George Burns sang this song during his birthday remains with me. I also enjoyed the way he did backflips and cartwheels in the field once his dream came true in the movie! The words of the song are so true - I didn't understand until way later in my 30s what the message in the song was. To all you 18 year olds, carpe diem and enjoy your youth! Time goes by soooo fast!
I hope someone reading this may not put off till tomorrow something you want to do or see to another day. Seize the day and do it today...... I remember one day I saw George Burns was performing at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. I called all my friends to try to get one of them to go with me that night and they all did not want to go, I decided I would go next time he performed there. Sadly I never got the opportunity. I wish I was 18 again and could do the whole thing all over again.
I'm 30 years old, and hearing this makes me sad. A short while ago I decided to make something of myself, before I start singing "I wish I was 30 again."
The movie 18 Again he sang this, he was a wonderful actor, he truly lived his life to the end, he had a long life too. I wish I could go back knowing what I know now, or at least how it's turned out.
some of the old people in the aduience looked like they wanted to cry this song is jst wow amazing saddest song i have ever heard with out a doubt i listen to it almost every day..
I think the saddest thing about the video is that all the grey haired people in this video is dead. George lived to be 100, smoking, drinking and all. Who can tell Mr Burns smoking is bad for you.
@vinyard7777 Cigars weren't laced with stuff that was/is in cigarettes either, drinking in moderation isn't harmful either. I don't know what's worse, getting old, or getting Alzheimer's and losing your mind, you never know where you are, can't take care of yourself, waking up scared because you feel lost.
I need to find a copy of this for my FIL who turns 100 in March of 2012. Any ideas where I can find this or the MP3 of the song? Its a tough one to find.
@DannyZ68 exactly the message of the new movie 'midnight in paris.' we have to live in the world god gave us, we have to live for today, and for the future; the past is gone, all that it leaves are the (usually somewhat inaccurate but still very important) nostalgic memories.
Yes youth is wasted on the young. I would love to be 18 but know what i know today. God bless all of you 18 year olds and please please enjoy every minute of it.
Don't be sad, George would want you to smile....he made us all laugh so much. I met him on my birthday (and his) Jan. 20th...in Las Vegas and was invited to one of his last shows. What a great entertainer! -Ethan Tudor W.
George Burns, what an artist, he made it to 100 which he said was his goal, It did not surprise me when the audience gave him a standing ovation in this video, To the person who put it on youtube, Thank's, I'm 68 and wonder where all the years went, If any of you "and I'm sure there are" are 18 this is the truest song that you will ever hear, Enjoy your life for there is no fun in growing old, George & Gracie are a legend thank you for entertaining us all these years,
I'll be turning 45 years old tomorrow...and it makes me think of this song. If you're young...enjoy yourself...and your life...and be sure to have lots of fun...coz believe me...it goes by very, very fast...seems like only yesterday...that I was 18. (oh well...I'm still 18 at Heart!) xD
At 18 I was in VietNam, don't think I want to go through that again. I've had a good life made some mistake's but not ashamed of my life. Thanks George for all the good memories. I'll be seeing you soon. Save me a seat

We all identify with this so much because, well, at least for me, it takes me back to when my mother was alive, my father was alive, all my aunts and uncles, all of their friends, when we would all get together. Who knew that 30 years would pass so quickly and they would all be gone?? Times are different now.
this time period had all these great actors. and today all we have is niggers and tartlets trying to fill this impossible shadow. lady gaga and lil wayne im looking at you 2 idiots
It goes by fast...faster and faster. I am appalled that I am suddenly in my 50's. Tomorrow I'll be in my late 70's. Thank you Lord, for the promise of new life.
IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN SAID LIFE IS WASTED ON THE YOUNG AND I GUESS IT KIND OF IS. ALWAYS LIKED THIS SONG AND GEORGE SINGING IT, ALTHOUGTH TOM JONES DOES WELL.
I am Australian, I have always wondered where the class went in American comedy. I look at Buster Jackie Jerry, many more ,and of course George, the golden age. Now we have the cheap laugh, not the thinking mans laugh. The timeless comedy.
I was 18 in 1964 and just joined the Army. The next few years I spent in Cyprus and Germeny.I am now past 60 and stuck in a wheelchair.I wish I was 18 again. The hardest part of getting old is to see all my old buddies and friends die. This song hits my heart like a truck.
I wish I was 18 again, don't get me wrong this generation has produced a lot of kids that meet or beat that standard of morality from the " greatest generation" just look at our military. but as a whole this generation can't hold a candle to the Americans of the past. I am closing in on 50 in a hurry and my generation is nowhere near the caliber of those who survived the 20's thru the 40's sorry but true. i wish I was 18 but then not now and not during the time i went thru it.
I am 54 and when I was 18 I made a big mistake and lost the first and only true love of my life. Now, almost 36 years later I have found her and we are madly in love with each other and are getting back together again. God has answered my prayers and she has forgiven me. Don't say things to anyone to make yourself out to be someone you arent. You can destroy your life by telling a simple white lie....
LOL, before you start talking about moral fibre as it relates to George Burns, remember he started out as a vaudevillian comedian. Don't get me wrong I think George Burns is great, one of the best "straight" men ever and Gracie was the perfect foil. However, moral fibre is not something he was probably ever overly concerned about. ;-p
I don't get it no disrespect to u old wise folks thaht posted commets about wishing to be 18 again but I'm am 18 and there's nothing great about my age I can't even buy beer lol giv me insite in y.. Belive me 18 Is not cool
When I was fishing this morning this song started in my head. I had to get on here and find it. I teared up hearing it and seeing ol George again. I wish we could go back in time. When life was just so better than today.... Yep, I wish I was 18 again.. Thanks for posting this. Be blessed.
I'm so glad I grew up watching George Burns and the performers like him; Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Milton Berle, Red Skelton, Jack Benny and all. I never watch the programs and sitcoms on TV today... they just don't have this caliber of talent, if what they have today is anything to be considered talent. Thank goodness these clips are on YouTube to bring back those precious memories.
This was very moving... I was fortunate to have met him back in 1976, he was so gracious and genuine, a very dear man. He was so generous and giving as a performer. He didn't ever take the credit for all the brilliant material that he wrote for the Burns & Allen partner act, but instead always gave Gracie the limelight and let her take most, if not all, of the laughs. He was quite a hoofer too in his younger days, he and Gracie made a film with Fred Astaire, "Damsel in Distress".
@rickbangkok ... I remember that joke. He was talking about a woman who said with everything bad about smoking why won't he listen to his doctor when he tells him he should quit. George Burns answered, "Why should I, he's dead".
I loved this song in the early 80's, and I LOVE it still. I don't think I would really want to go back, but what a lovely song.... and his singing of this just makes it SO much more special!!
I saw George on a talk show and he talked about Gracie, his life without her and this song ! The talk show host asked George if he wished he were 18 again ! George replied,, I was I were 80 again ! Thanks George I miss you, RIP !
I'm 62 and if I could go back and change anything I wouldn't.
The bad times just made the good times all that much better and if I could change anything I would turn down the opportunity because I might have missed what those things led to and a lot of what I have now.
I grew up watching and listening to George and Gracie.
I am honored to have had the privilage.
America lost a treasure when we lost Gracie and another when we lost George.
Notic George mentions the songs writer, not many do that. Also notice the older people in the audience they understand. They remember when people were polite and gave ladies thier seat' There was a lot less grafitti and few young people swore. It was a gentiler time.
I am "just" 26 years old, but I would give a lot to have known those days.
When I see my generation, ninety percent it just makes me cry.
Moral fibre has just been torn in to pieces, and everybody want's to be like the the gangsters they see on MTV, and it makes you cool when you treat women like objects.
And what is even worse is the fact that an increasing percentage of the girls nowadays expects you to behave like that, just not to stand out from a crowd.
@ansenpietje123 Well said..."entertainment" nowadays is becoming very base..from so called reality T.V to UFC....but there is hope...because there are nice intelligent young people like you out there as well!!!
I wish I was 18 again but if I could only be 18 in todays world then I will stay here at 53. I seen so much in the last 40 years and it gets wrost each day.
It makes me happy to read that their is still some at your age seeing this.
@ansenpietje123 Lol women have been treated like objects for centuries.. And if you honestly believe everyone wants to be gangsters you are living in a shady area move to Canada things are not like that here. Girls don't know what they want there dumb, women on the other hand I hope would of matured past that state and have a backbone.
@drblake Well wait a minute there drblake, you are right about women treated like objects for centuries but not it has become worse and a guy rarely knows how to treat a girl. There were no rappers talking about getting into girls pants or videos of girls half naked dancing around. I live in Canada and people still try to be gangster. And generalizing that girls are dumb today is plain wrong, just like saying guys are jerks, yes some are but there are plenty of guys that treat a girl right.
@ansenpietje123 im only 38 years old and even my generation got caught up in all that nonsense out there today...............................agree 100% my man!...peace out
@ansenpietje123 im only 38 years old and even some of my generation got caught up in all that nonsense out there today...............................agree 100% my man!...peace out
@ansenpietje123 then you need to travel a bit and meet new crowds, I'm 26 too and we're not all like that. you're staring at the world from inside a red cultural bubble, everything looks red from inside it. It's only until you step outside of it that you see how many different bubbles there are, all different colors and all different sizes.
@ansenpietje123 God Bless you..... I am so glad there are still a few young people who think like you! And you are right those were the best days ever.
@ansenpietje123 Well I am 72 an I think you are dead on. Thank God for young people like you that recognize the situation this county and its people are in.
@MsTheSoo I'm 15, and I can't stand how bad things have gotten, from the immorality to the distancing of people from God, and from the pathetic atmosphere of today's "society" to the large amount of drugs and bad behavior in middle and high schools. I envy you for living during the time of a greater America.
@paddyboyyy I have a feeling Egypt's getting the Brotherhood and going radical, but I hope not.
And yeah, I really do want to do something about that, but the problem is that people with these views (apart from the Tea Party) are generally quiet about everything. We need more young people to really start a third Great Awakening and conservative resurgence (real conservativism/classic liberalism, not that "invade iraq" stuff).
I don't know if you fully agree, but this is bringing back the 80s
@rhinnawi95 When we leave Iraq the brotherhood will take it, same with Afghanistan, and Libya, we've given the muslims the middle east, they've started annexing Europe, you'll not see it on the news, but will hear it from the people living there. America is on it's way, the hammer of freedom of religion continues to crust Christian rights. The brotherhood ain't radicals, they are muslims following the holy book, read into it's contents, not what they try to spoon feed you, they aren't our friend
@Maples01 Then let those Christians come to the West. They're not like their Muslim counterparts. I'm actually a Levantine Christian (and hate the living crap out of Islam. Having lived in the Middle East, it's hard not to hate it). Families like mine come to the West (Europe, Canada, USA) and they actually adjust and their kids don't turn into radical nutjobs like many Muslims, particularly those in Europe (ones here in the US just adopt ghetto lifestyle because it's "cool"). I used to think

I used to think
@Maples01 - like you do. I was once a neoconservative Republican, but I realized that there isn't much of a difference between the GOP and the Democrats. Why is it the responsibility of the US to take care of and nurture the world? We can't even take care of ourselves. Instead of spending on war and entitlements (at least at the federal level), let's keep taxes at an absolute minimum and stick to defense.
As for what you said about them not being radicals, you're right. Islam is radical itself.
@rhinnawi95 I'm neither, I look at their platform and vote, we had a wonderful democratic governor in my state, he did a great job, term ended in 08, a republican replaced him, because his party covered an idiot. I say withdraw from the UN, tell everyone we'll no longer police the globe for them, they bitch when we do, and bitch when we don't. Lock down the borders and secure it with a military force like others, send islam a message of no admittance!
@Maples01 Perfectly said! To be honest, I'd rather vote for an honest socialist than a dishonest self-proclaimed libertarian (as I may have mentioned before, I'm a right-libertarian myself). With that said, I'm perfectly happy putting Dennis Kucinich in office (I'm from his district). Too bad I'm still sixteen and can't vote, but if I could, it's based on a few extremely important issues (like those wars we're fighting. How embarrassing and sickening!).
Since you're 16 you might not know this. I challenge you to find me one country that actually thrived under socialism. It can not sustain itself. So before you vote for an "honest" socialist, learn what socialism is first. It's a nice idea, but no practical in reality.
@NoamTube You have a point, but I don't think ideas of those like Kucinich would get far in this country. Plus, most of these socialists are anti-war and socially libertarian, which are my most important issues.
@NoamTube People from other civilisations, i.e. off planet are stunned when they discover that we "pay" to "live" on this planet. The most successful economies are anarchist, i.e. NO CURRENCY the inhabitants work 2 days a week and everything is provided by a system set up by the people. No leaders just administrators who are picked from the masses at random. How do they do it ? Everything is done by super advanced technology.
@ansenpietje123 Don't be to deceived about morality today as compared to years ago. The only moral issues that are different today is that the censorship is gone. People today are use to hearing all the news, private or not. In the old days people lived just as immoral as today, it just appeared to be a better time. You were just as likely to be the milkmans child in 1932 as to be the mailman's baby in1992, it would just be hidden from you better. Sorry if this hurts, but it's the truth..
@ansenpietje123 Age 26 huh? I feel for you. I am 38 and I was born 50-300 years too late myself. Loosing those 12 years would not be my choice. But, at least you recognize and appreciate the classics and the class acts. The goods news is that the Internet makes all the good stuff available to you. Want to be way ahead of your years? Read Errol Flynn's autobiography titled "my wicked wicked ways". He was Brad Pitt, Clooney, Stallone, all rolled into one. Just look up his quotes & stories!
Oh, fuck off. Get off your soapbox, you're clearly looking in all the wrong places for this moral fibre you claim has been destroyed. MTV? Our entire generation takes your attitude to MTV, it's a joke, anyone from our gen that watches or imitates it is humilated by the rest of us. "An increasing percentage of the girls nowadays expect you to behave like that"? Where are these percentages, how do you know this? Maybe you know girls different to all the ones I know.
The only difference between now and then is that today everything is open. People's attitudes are easier to see than the dolled up, censored days of old. His generation was puncuated by racial intolerance, much greater objectification of women than nowadays, and complete and utter opposition to social progression. I am very thankful I was born into todays tolerant, free, and entertaining society, where we aren't told what to and what not to like, where people like you can say wh
Where are the great performers of 2009? They are long past and no one is around to replace them. Thanks to YouTube for making all of the great performers available to us.... Cheers.
One of the amazing things about this performance is that he did it straight; no doubt due to the meaning of it and his audience. Usually part of his humor was that he would start a really clever and funny little song and then suddenly stop and say 'and that's enough of that', or something!
I love cigars too. He said once that White Owl gave him a lifetime supply and that he smoked about 5 a day. We don't inhale cigars and pipes you know. Best wishes.
My Father in law turns 100 in March. We are going to have a party for him and I would love for us all to sing this song to him. Do you know where I can get a copy of this clip to give to him? I can get the lyrics online but not this song sung by George Burns...a man of his generation.

I am Australian, I have always wondered where the class went in American comedy. I look at Buster Jackie Jerry, many more ,and of course George, the golden age. Now we have the cheap laugh, not the thinking mans laugh. The timeless comedy.

George Burns was a great man and a great entertainer, but he had lots of girlfriends. Before during and after marriage.

LOL, before you start talking about moral fibre as it relates to George Burns, remember he started out as a vaudevillian comedian. Don't get me wrong I think George Burns is great, one of the best "straight" men ever and Gracie was the perfect foil. However, moral fibre is not something he was probably ever overly concerned about. ;-p

Funny...I'm 62 and a Grandpa to five wonderfully funny, beautiful grandchildren and that's better than anything I ever was at 18.
I understand the sentiment but I wouldn't trade what I have now for anything in the world, including being 18 again.
Those of you who aren't grandparents yet...I promise...most of you will love it.
It may be the best thing you ever were or ever could be.
At least it is for me and millions of grandparents around the world.
I do love the video though.
Thanks.

Thank goodness these clips are on YouTube to bring back those precious memories.
werksdesign 1 year ago
This was very moving... I was fortunate to have met him back in 1976, he was so gracious and genuine, a very dear man. He was so generous and giving as a performer. He didn't ever take the credit for all the brilliant material that he wrote for the Burns & Allen partner act, but instead always gave Gracie the limelight and let her take most, if not all, of the laughs. He was quite a hoofer too in his younger days, he and Gracie made a film with Fred Astaire, "Damsel in Distress".

This vid warms my heart.

@ansenpietje123 Lol women have been treated like objects for centuries.. And if you honestly believe everyone wants to be gangsters you are living in a shady area move to Canada things are not like that here. Girls don't know what they want there dumb, women on the other hand I hope would of matured past that state and have a backbone.
drblake 1 year ago
@drblake Well wait a minute there drblake, you are right about women treated like objects for centuries but not it has become worse and a guy rarely knows how to treat a girl. There were no rappers talking about getting into girls pants or videos of girls half naked dancing around. I live in Canada and people still try to be gangster. And generalizing that girls are dumb today is plain wrong, just like saying guys are jerks, yes some are but there are plenty of guys that treat a girl right.

@rhinnawi95 but you CAN turn it around...look at what happened in Egypt when people get together for change. It's not too late. Yet.
paddyboyyy 10 months ago
@paddyboyyy I have a feeling Egypt's getting the Brotherhood and going radical, but I hope not.
And yeah, I really do want to do something about that, but the problem is that people with these views (apart from the Tea Party) are generally quiet about everything. We need more young people to really start a third Great Awakening and conservative resurgence (real conservativism/classic liberalism, not that "invade iraq" stuff).
I don't know if you fully agree, but this is bringing back the 80s
rhinnawi95 10 months ago

Islam is radical itself.
rhinnawi95 4 months ago
@rhinnawi95 I'm neither, I look at their platform and vote, we had a wonderful democratic governor in my state, he did a great job, term ended in 08, a republican replaced him, because his party covered an idiot. I say withdraw from the UN, tell everyone we'll no longer police the globe for them, they bitch when we do, and bitch when we don't. Lock down the borders and secure it with a military force like others, send islam a message of no admittance!
Maples01 4 months ago
@Maples01 Perfectly said! To be honest, I'd rather vote for an honest socialist than a dishonest self-proclaimed libertarian (as I may have mentioned before, I'm a right-libertarian myself). With that said, I'm perfectly happy putting Dennis Kucinich in office (I'm from his district). Too bad I'm still sixteen and can't vote, but if I could, it's based on a few extremely important issues (like those wars we're fighting. How embarrassing and sickening!).
rhinnawi95 4 months ago
@rhinnawi95
Since you're 16 you might not know this. I challenge you to find me one country that actually thrived under socialism. It can not sustain itself. So before you vote for an "honest" socialist, learn what socialism is first. It's a nice idea, but no practical in reality.
NoamTube 3 months ago
@NoamTube You have a point, but I don't think ideas of those like Kucinich would get far in this country. Plus, most of these socialists are anti-war and socially libertarian, which are my most important issues.

Oh, fuck off. Get off your soapbox, you're clearly looking in all the wrong places for this moral fibre you claim has been destroyed. MTV? Our entire generation takes your attitude to MTV, it's a joke, anyone from our gen that watches or imitates it is humilated by the rest of us. The only difference between now and then is that today everything is open. People's attitudes are easier to see than the dolled up, censored days of old. His generation was puncuated by racial intolerance, much greater objectification of women than nowadays, and complete and utter opposition to social progression.
