Smedley Butler died in 1940. This is an obviously updated speech which is not the same as the speech delivered by Smedley Butler in th 1930s. It's nice, but it is not Smedley Butler's words although it does use parts of his speech.

@paschnn1 I'm not saying Eisenhower lived up to his own words. Most people, especially politicians, don't live up to their own words. My point was only that maybe Eisenhower was inspired by Butler. I did a couple of years in the Navy out of high school. Desert storm was going on, the 1st gulf war. If that war wasnt about oil and only oil, than i dont know what is . The medals i got in the service looked nice on my uniform, but at 2nd glance looked like they might have cost the milltary maybe $3 to make, at most. They look about as cheap as a trinket you get out of a gumball machine.

Ahhhhh, yes, the cost of gallantry on the battlefield. Give the dead guy a snappy salute, a marching band tune, and a $30 posthumous medal for his services. @paschnn1 I'm not saying Eisenhower lived up to his own words. Most people, especially politicians, don't live up to their own words. My point was only that maybe Eisenhower was inspired by Butler. I'm not all that familiar with Eisenhower and am not trying to defend him, but maybe he felt some remorse for his prior support and participation in the military-industrial complex. Maybe reading Butlers words caused him to rethink some of his own positions which could have led to his famous speech.

He could say all of this when he was retired. If he had acted on these ideas when he was active duty (when he could have made a real difference) he would have been shot and no one would even remember his name. And on it goes and goes and goes. It's very easy to say we're against war. Ending a war once it has started is almost impossible. It's probably the most difficult thing in the world that humanity could possibly achieve.

We went to war in Iraq. We took control of there Oil. Our gaint oil corporations made big profits while our soldiers die and the public get left holding the bill for the war. There are also comments from the great Marine Gen Chesty Puller that said the wars he had fought in in the Central American area and Haiti were for the bankers in America and not the cause of freedom as some are told. Read some of the history archives from the USMC and get the real facts.

I did a couple of years in the Navy out of high school. Desert storm was going on, the 1st gulf war. If that war wasnt about oil and only oil, than i dont know what is . The medals i got in the service looked nice on my uniform, but at 2nd glance looked like they might have cost the milltary maybe $3 to make, at most. They look about as cheap as a trinket you get out of a gumball machine.

@flubno You may be right about the cost of cheaper medals. I looked up the cost of making the CMH. The Congressional Medal of Honor costs $29.98 to produce and is made mostly of brass alloy. Ahhhhh, yes, the cost of gallantry on the battlefield. Give the dead guy a snappy salute, a marching band tune, and a $30 posthumous medal for his services. Of course, the dead guys family gets a cotton / polyester folded flag worth a few bucks.
And the guys who sent him to their war get $billions. LOL.

@jacobji5 exactly, thanks for the info. I wondered of they spent extra money on the congressional Medal of Honor. If they cared they would make it out of gold or silver. The Medal of Honor is the top medal. I was referring to other medals that are somewhat common in the millitary. They might as well come out of a cracker jack box.
