OMG...you useless excuse for a thrash drummer...commenting on Jazz? Very funny. How about going back and listen to Lars Alrich again so you can keep getting it wrong and of course never progress to any level of proficiency.
Nice lesson, tho I miss a few vital things. For instance that a beat isn't in an even feel, but in a triplet feel. Sure people can play it without knowing what they're playing, but you have to know how a jazz rythm is built up if you want to dig deeper in to it.
man ur great...how long have you been playing?...thats a pretty awesome lesson for someone who's not an actual jazz drummer...keep on rocking in the free world
Fantastic video. Nice and detailed and exactly as how I would teach it.
However, you missed just one vital thing. In jazz, the ride and hi-hat are played to a louder volume, but the snare and particularly bass, should be played at a much quieter level, until of course you come to fills. So remember that people, as Gregg Bissonette himself once told me: "The ride and hi-hat is like the steak and chips, and the bass and snare is the salt an pepper, to add flavour"
i disagree, you must not listen to jazz if your making that assesment. I dont mean to be forward but jazz isnt always mellow, there is alot ALOT ALOT more to jazz than just mellow laid back swinging. please, im not trying to be mean to you, just some info.
btw i do listen to a lot of jazz: stan getz, herbie hancock, dave brubeck, vince guaraldi, miles davis to name a few. this in MY opinion is mellow. there are several style/categories of jazz, just like blues. to each his own
Hey man...great job!!! The way you explain stuff is great, I wish there were more people concerned about teaching others rather than showing off in cameras!! Great job, got a new subscriber...greetings from Honduras
Hey dude...can you make something on drum tuning...I saw your "Slow Jammin to a Burning Song" video and man...I just loved the sound of your drums... I own a EX series PDP kit, It sounds ok...but I'm sure it can sound better...I would appreciate it veri much...greetings
i'll try.. i get so many requests for different vids... then i just usually end up making whatever comes to my head when i press record, but i'll try : )
ooh, thanks for asking, but i think i'm even less of a metal drummer than i am a jazz drummer. i would make the most lame metal lesson, then i'd get hate mail from hardcore dudes for my lack of double kickness.. lol
Hey Johnnyonline, thanks for the lessons - really like your stuff dude. Can you talk a bit about the way you use your left hand to play the snare in this jazz lesson?. it's seems like you're ghosting on the snare and that seems pretty crucial to getting the feel for jazz playing.
absolutly spot on. Great jazz lesson, dynamics may have got missed (they play a big part in jazz and even alot of other styles) but none the less great.
Dave weckl is a great drummer to check out aswell for jazz/contempory rock
Muito bom, quem sabe, sabe!!!

at last a drum teacher made for musicians, not technicians. all these "drum lessons videos" are so boring and missing the point.
keep up doing those lessons !

Thanks a lot,
Good stuff for the jazz guitar player that has just bought his first drum kit :-) (that's me, haha), and wants to learn to swing.
