Scotty was then about four years younger than myself (I was born in 1959). But he was tough and strong. He often buckled the knees of much bigger guys with his reverse punch to the breadbasket during Chicago-area tournaments.
FULL body contact was then the rule for every division in such tourneys. Fighters from peewee to black belt could also score by solidly STRIKING those areas of the head uncovered by a catcher's mask, with or without pads.
@stevevandien Jhoon Rhee's Safe-T equipment did not become standard for each division until later in the decade. Before then, what the heck, I endured full-power punches in the mouth, plus solid kicks to my head and groin.
It was a point of pride back then to accept such blows, avoid others, and give back as good as one got. I decked at least two opponents by way of the latter ethic:) --
its impressive to see tht ur kid had the balls to go up against this giant, but u gotta tell him to not point his ass at the competitor especially when the other kid is that size. I am aware that he is trying to get a kick in but he has to understand that in a real fight against someone bigger than him that he needs to use speed not power or kicks to win. the other kid is too big for any of his kicks to be effective, its like kicking a wall and he will only get hurt. but he did great though!
That's totally not fair!

I recall a dojo mate from the early 1970s.
