Wow, that whipping scene tells volumes about the kind of relationship Garbo's character can expect with Asther's character. I love this movie. They're so gorgeous.

Nils Asther was almost as beautiful as Garbo. what a great match for faces. I believe they were great friends all thier lives. He was wonderful in 'The Bitter Tea of General Yen'.

@tyjeffries I believe their friendship must have been overrated since she had lots of pull and obviously didn't use it to help keep him in Hollywood to become the major star he was destined to be after his monumental portrayal of General Yen.

how interesting. You are right about that performance.. he was incredibly good.and so beautiful. I don't think Garbo went around helping people somehow.. lol... she did have a reputation for being..well lets just say..self reliant. . Nils was an extraodinary screen presence..,

@lovenilsasther - It is sad to realize even Claudette Coburn was not precisely ideally kind to directors and had a bad attitude towards to others. Especially when she was
a star and from what they said about her in "It Happened One Night." She couldn't wait for the picture to be over to go on vacation. Plus it was said she asked a lot from'
the producer the money she wanted and got it because she was a Star back then.

I love Wild Orchids. The relationship between Garbo and Asther in this movie is so messed up. When she sees him whipping his servant, she's initially horrified, but it ends up being one of the things that attracts her to him.
