When you watch these videos, you see so many RIP messages. I didn't know Rob Grill died - boy, life is really sad sometimes - so many great music makers gone.
@EVIEHEARS I love artists / tunes from yesterdecades. I wonder where this was videoed and what is this "Linda" doing today? I'd like to go to that very location where this was filmed.
Heaven has gained a great singer and musician. We were blessed to have Rob as long as we did. Maybe he was too good for this world. His music will live on. RIP beautiful Rob.
Getting old does suck. However, we have memories that most generations can't even image. We had a lot of very talented original singers and bands that spans a lifetime of talent.
Getting old sucks, although I love this song, it's depresses me, when I think how young I was when it came out. Just food for thought for all the young people out there that think old age is a long way off for it comes fast and the older you get the faster it comes, so don't squander your youth.
@jtsct Yes, you're right, time goes terribly fast. I do not feel depressed about it, though. I was 13 years old when I heard it the first time and I dug it a lot. Now, three grandchildren later I still dig it. Age is nothing, but health is the most important thing, if you do not have that everything sucks.
..All these years...and I have not ever forgotten this song..My first love( I was 15..so you are right , Miss Taylor Swift..:} ) played this song for me...I almost cried..and he would not ever know that this touched my life, for many many years...I still think of him when I hear this song,.. I can remember that night, as if it were yesterday..and it was 1968..I was in High School. Thank you, DWL...
@seasideshelby1 -- Hi Shelby, all these years and I have not forgotten this song either, but I was 11 and not yet bothered by love. The best time in life, perhaps, is when you're just old enough to like a love song, yet too young to wrangle with love itself.
This is one of my favorite roots song... I really like the way it was sung ...
rob was such a cute guy ... m wondering with whom he was going around at that time ;) !?! I guess millions of girls must have been chasing him. Well, if i had lived during that time I guess I'd been one of them *lol* ...
Love this song, and the video. Must've been fun making it, (the video). I didn't think they were going to catch her. Like something from Castaneda's 'Don Juan' books. A female Don Genaro!
Great early music video...looks like it was filmed in Chatsworth Park, San Fernando Valley, L.A. Does anyone know WHY Grass Roots changed the title & lyric "Balla Linda" to Bella Linda? I adorded this song in 1969 in the US, and moved to Rome in '72 when I heard the wonderful original by Lucio Battisti. Listen to it, folks: "Balla Linda".
The girl is called "Linda" just because of how it sounds, since this song is a cover of the Italian "Balla (and not bella) Linda" meaning: "Linda, dance!"
One of the most underrated American bands from the 60's who had a ton of hits. They charted 29 records and were on the Billboard charts for 307 consecutive weeks. Lucy Saroyan who is the girl in the video was an actress who died in 2003 of hepatitis C at age 57.
Interesting thing about Lucy Saroyan, she was actually the daughter of Carol Grace and Wiliam Saroyan, the author...after they divorced, Carol Grace married Walter Matthau. Kind of cool that she's Walter Matthau's stepdaughter, imo. :)
It makes me wish Creed Bratton still had the same mustache and beard in his role on "The Office." She looks familiar from the late 60s, does anyone know who the girl is?
This was probably shown on some variety show. The first time I saw what went on to be called a "music video" was a vid of the Beatles singing "Strawberry Fields Forever" on the Holllywood Palace. I remember that the Grassroots' singer, Rob Grill, had a close call about year before this vid at the beginning of a performance in L. A. and almost got electrocuted.
Nobody sings it like Lucio Battisti, but I was surprised to find out that the Grass Roots translated the original "Balla Linda", and that there was even a video !!! Nice Job.
I have NOT heard this song in about 40 yrs. The video IS a surprise since I have never seen it nor did I know it existed! great song! Waldo is right, it is what we had back then. Color was still a novelty! de Craig
Markthompson123: It was 1969, for cryin' out loud. You're lucky to even have a film record of this song. It was rare at the time; rarer still to have survived to the present. I hunted for years for this.
BTW, moronic excess in the use of punctuation marks doens't help your case.
Another wonderful pop classic from one of my all-time favorite pop groups!! This is actually a very ground breaking video & very ahead of it's time, (well before MTV). I love this song & I love the video too, it's too groovy!! Thanks for posting, Gary in PA USA
this song was written by the great italian musician Lucio Battisti with the original title "balla Linda". the grass roots covered italian songs like this one and "Live for Today" , "piangi con me" in italian. i don't know how they did this, but there is a romanticism in their music which is clearly similar to italian music.
One of the very best American groups from the 60's and early 70's. Rob Grill, Creed Bratton, Warren Entner and the remainder of the Grass Roots are one of the few that could make number 1 hits while the Beatles were in their prime. Kudos to them for their great music.
@kwixotic I KNOW that tune.. I hadn't listened to this song before today.

I had this record as a kid & played the hell out of this song. What an exellent horn arrangement!
I happen to still own about 18 Grass Roots 45's.
The Grass Roots had a heck of alot of soul for such a commercially successful band.
IMO.

Dude take your meds & move back to NAZI Land....people like you make me SICK. You never share your feeling and everybody hate you because of your mental problems.Mommy hung a cork-chop around your neck just to get the puppy to play with you.Your dog grew up first chance he ran away. God loves ya....ha your not his favorite!!!
