Everytime I see this video I'm in such awe of you Dad. Lauri daughter of Phil Oestricher . The man who's brilliant piloting saved the F-16 that day and his life so long ago. luv ya Dad.
I don't think I've ever seen a flight deck pitch downward as sharply as it does at 1:55. I think that's an S-2 or S-3 Viking, and it's lucky they got it into the air.
cool to read the background of the yf16 test... imagine if he had destroyed the prototype and the f16 had never come to fruition as a result? Talk about being an unsung hero!
I saw this stuff, and more, on a video tapefloating around the bomber community in the early '90s...if anyone has a good quality original to work with, and can transfer it clean to YouTube, it would be a great thing. The main reason I enjoyed this low-video-quality clip was that I remember the better-quality original...in any case, thanks for posting...good Flight Saftey meeting videos, if we can get better quality clips...
The C-130 at 3:18 hurts to watch. The rest of the footage looks *awful* though. Some of it is so washed out it's literally nothing but a white screen.
I saw something similar but it was an A-4 landing on my carrier. It hit the A/G wire but kind of bounced. The forward force pulled aircraft forward but made the engine 'strip', and apsrks flew! The A/G crew behind the wire panicked and pulled their life jackets prematurely in the event of a whip back. No one was hurt, except maybe some rapid pulses.
Looks like he really struggled with the jet.. I also loved the S-2 taking off from CV-14 and getting slammed by the wave.. what a ride that must have been! Tough plane and good pilot - can't believe it lifted..
I am not sure. I think it is an F-4 Phantom at a target range a little over two decades ago.
I think it might be an F-4E Phantom 67-0308 GA of the 035th TTW on 1985 September 9th at Leach Lake Gunnery range. (public info from an ejection web site)
I am not positive that this is the incident, but the description seems to match.
If anybody would care to verify, correct or offer other possibilities; feel free to do so.
That plane "flying" throught the water was an S-2; a US Navy cargo/recon/refuling carrier based platform. No ejection seats for anybody inside. The pilots either fly the aircraft or fly it to the scene of the accident. Great job by PIC and SIC on keeping that thing in the air. I would have thought the turbine's hot section would have been dounced with injested water and exploded the engines internally.
Thanks for pointing that out, I will update the info. I always think of the C-2, E-2, and S-2 as more or less the same aircraft. However I would prefer to be more correct. Thanks
I also often misidentify the A-7 and F-8 for each other.
what happened to that F4 he just went vertical ? how about the second crash inwhere the plane tips just over the end of the deck ? btw that pilot of the plane who flew trough that wave has quite some balls not to bail out :)

Nice to see the YF16 "maiden flight" again. Phil Oestricher was in a bit of PIO, but succeded in catching up with the plane at last.

@1:55 It really took off? How got the plane out of the water? I would shat my pants.
mcossy 4 years ago
hey on the run, that was an S2. the main difference between the S2 and S3 is that the S2 is a prop and the S3 is a jet

anthony2154: Thanks, not being a Navy man, I find the two difficult to discern.

the 2nd and 3nd and 4th was like WTF!? those were stupid man errors.

F-3 taking off from carrier deck appears to be catapult failure.. no steam pressure..

bad enough your plane goes off the end of the aircraft carrier, but then the carrier runs you over!!

There is more information in the video details.
The F-16 was only on a high-speed taxi test, but a control induced oscillation became so bad he opted to take it off.
Philip F. Oestricher was the first pilot to fly the YF-16.

good recovery..test pilots even now have jets that induce flcs, eng, ect problems to see if they can bring it back for test airplanes.

I don't see nothing. What's wrong with the brightness?
LoudS1l3nc3 5 years ago
If you can't see anything you might have your graphics set wrong and or need to get the flash player update.
You need to have your graphics set on high.
It is an old damaged video, some of the shots are washed out/over exposed very badly, but still has informative content. Also see link in video info.

if it had jet turbines they would have, remember S-2 ain't no E-2 platform, used good old radials, one time old tech saved a man's butt.
harrierjet 5 years ago
Thanks. I didn't know the C-2 family used different classes/types of engines.
ATFSCrash 5 years ago
S-2 flew radials not turbo props you must be thinking of the C-2 E-2 series.

im not sure bailing out of plane like that is too easy, especially under water

S-2 trackers didn't have ejection seats, either he flew or he drownded:)
harrierjet 5 years ago
The F4 probably had a hydraulic malfunction, either that or his elevators got stuck.
murraybs 5 years ago
You are likely correct, a mechanical malfunction probably it what allowed the aircraft to do a wing stall.
