Mary Lou told John Hammond about Charlie Christian @ 1939 which lead to him being auditioned by Benny Goodman in LA and taking him into BG's small combos. She was in Andy Kirk's Clouds of Joy Band from 1930 - 1942 after being it's chauffeur.
I always enjoy hearing where a tune came from - it's roots, if you will. Thanks for sharing this with us. It's as important to our legacy of music as the armed forces network broadcasts of such legends as Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw and the others.
OTRNut has admirable uploaded Command Performance 1942 (upto 1947). If you like these Armed Forces Radio Services (AFRS) Jubilee, you will probably enjoy those as well.
Actually I like the Benny Goodman version much better but this one is OK. Boogie woogie piano and big bands don't seem to mix very well. Still, a great song from a great lady.
@lastnameinthebook Your opinion stinks, you can take that ofay Benny not-so-goodman and shove him up your ofay ass! Cracker-man! Don't you fuck with Mary Lou Williams! You got it? Damn, I can't stand you ignorant, self righteous, honky ass motherfuckers! As we all know, Jazz evolved within the black community in spite of white racism and with no real contribution from whites, other than to first belittle it and then try to steal credit for it. Whitey don't account for shit! Got it?
Compliments from the musicfariy! If you want to listen to a variety of this type of music you can click on my name in the info box, then Playlists (toward the top) and then Play All. Hope you get an A.

My church is doing a concert honoring her and they've asked me to write an original poem. This information is very helpful.

Is it true that she mentored Monk, Dizzy and Bird?
holygroove2 2 years ago
Yes, according to her Wikipedia entry, fifth paragraph down. She collaborated extensively with other musicians, a pretty interesting read.
tug0jackson 2 years ago
@holygroove2 yep, she was their mentor, teacher and friend. Oh, and Charlie Parker. Truely amazing woman!
