  • Haha, im glad I live in Denmark, we dont have any alcohol rules! (except drunk driving and age limit, which really isnt enforced)

  • Also the VA ABC pressures business on things that are not their business. Small movie-rental/convenience store renting porn? (legally!) VA ABC says, "stop renting porn or we take your license."

Guess who's not renting porn anymore.

  • Awesome video -- as noted below, it only touches the absurdity of VA liquor laws. We can't even have real bars in the state, because your sales have to be at least 45% food/soda (that's the "ratio" baloney some defender of the ABC mentioned below). The leaders here yammer about freedom, but the ABC SS will shut you down in a heartbeat if you start telling people outside about your happy hour. Total hypocrisy.

  • thank god i live in alexandria, dc and md are 10 mins away

  • why don't they just advertise in areas outside ABC's jurisdiction? put an ad in a DC paper talking about how great your place is and how worth the trip it would be

  • Comment removed

  • and lets be perfectly clear. ABC employees don't have any need or desire to "cross" anyone. If the ABC is "crossing" you and causing a business to lose their license, its because they have repeatedly violated ID or ratio laws. It's that easy

  • False. They are told to order 24 hours in advance. Most orders are done and called out within an hour. And they don't pay tax on booze either.

If they bought it from resalers, VA would still set the prices but you'd have to run into Walmart to get it.

  • @ptc9687

The whole "crossing the ABC" thing is bogus. Regulatory agents, which are VA state police, not abc employees, "sting" bars like 3 times a year. If you fail, it's your fault. And there are many chances too.

As for advertising happy hours? Menus, store signs, etc, are commonplace and no one misses it...

3 gallons of whiskey vs 6 half gallons of whiskey trouble? Odd... since almost no liquor anywhere and no liquor in the state of VA is sold in sizes larger than 1/2 gallons.

  • america sucks

    thank god for canada

even the cops go easy on drunk teenagers at parties

  • hahaha virginia also fucks people on speeding. dont speed in virginia not even 5 over

  • Thank God I Live in NYC

  • This also means bars and restaurants in VA can not serve proper sangria since it contains both wine and brandy. Lawmakers in Richmond were working on this issue last year, but I believe it fell apart.

  • Part of Conservative is the religious fundamentalist Right - guess what they are against. Look at all of their views before you vote - like they way they distribute wealth to the wealthy.

  • Virginia is also the moonshine capitol of the world. lol. Just because the law is on the books doesn't mean the public will abide by it. The people say what goes not the government. they can wipe their asses with that page of the law book. And by the way there are no "bars" in virginia. Resturaunts and night clubs serve alcohol but you wont find a business that strictly serves just alcohol

  • Up until right now I was considering retiring in Virginia.

    Very disappointing.

  • What a Joke! Virginians are living in the Land of Liberty compared to NJ, and PA is WORSE still!

  • wow i live massachusettes where we have all the same laws and even more like its illegal to have more than 3 oz of liquor in a drink and all alcohol promotions are illegal , and because of a new law if your caught with ONE beer in your system you will go to jail immediately and can lose your licsence for a year for first offence!!! But thats the liberal mantallity for yah .Protect yourself from yourself even when its nonsence

  • What the hell --is the state run by bleeding heart socialist liberals who call themselves conservatives? This is a fruitless waste of tax money. "ewww ...drinking is bad --we need to protect people from themselves so that everyone can live happy!"

  • What the hell --is the state run by bleeding heart socialist liberals who call themselves conservatives? This is a fruitless waste of tax money. "ewww ...drinking is bad --we need to protect people from themselves so that everyone can live happy!"

  • The government finds all kinds of ways to steal our freedom. Let's steal it back!

  • Virginia doesn't seem to comprehend that Prohibition ended 90 years ago. This idiotic ABC agency is forcing consenting adults to forgo alcohol in the name of "pubic safety". This agency should be unconstitutional.

  • This is what happens when you have ultra conservative politicians regulating things that are anathema to their so-called idealogoy. to the person who wrote "socialism sucks" - you've got it all wrong: conservative ideology rooted in narrowminded religious dogma sucks.

  • Wow, drinking regulations are like a game! [RRRRRRR] whoops, that's also illegal!

  • ABC is probably paid off by DC liquor interests to keep the business flowing across the river into DC.

  • Eye-opening video. We are told we have rights, but in reality they are being slowly taken away from us. Actions speak louder than words and these actions are infringing on our basic rights. Wait for the day when we can get a ticket for walking on the wrong side of the street.

  • It's called organized crime.

  • Help bring common sense and freedom back to America! Support the Libertarian Party and its political candidates at lp(dot)org now!!!

  • Florida liquor laws are also stupid. These convoluted laws and regulations are the direct result of politicians being paid off with tiny amounts of money from special interests. If you vote them out another crook takes their place. The system has to change. Libertarian anyone?

  • Government gone amuck! What geniouses in VA came up with these idiotic regulations?

  • Thank you for this video, it has been favorited. It's educational, scary and, sadly, quite funny. Now I know never to travel to VA

  • those are some looney laws

  • I grew up in NOVA and I can tell you this... VIRGINIA IS A NANNY-STATE! They would regulate how you wipe your ass if they could!

  • Virgina also makes it illegal to sell alcohol after midnight. Have you seen the pissed off people in seven elevens tryna run in at 1155 lol and also why not I would love to play monopoly vodka addition or the incredible hulk twister game haha great vid

  • The ABCs of Virginia Alcohol Law: A-Always, B-Be, C-Closing. Always be closing, always be closing. You know what it takes to drive drunk? It takes brass balls to drive drunk.

  • who the fuck would wanna live there?

  • After living in VA for 20 years I moved to Maryland. In Maryland what a shock, You can not by beer or wine in Safeway, 7-11, Giant or any supermarket. It appears that the distribution of beer, wine and liquor is regulated by each county.

  • ABC not easy as 1, 2, 3

  • This video only skims the surface. It doesn't mention that restaurants have to buy their liquor at retail prices from the state monopoly -- they are not allowed to purchase products from wholesalers of their choice.

What's more, they have to place their orders at least 24 hours in advance. So if a bar runs out of vodka on Friday night, they can't replenish supplies until Monday.

    Socialism sucks.

  • I don't think it's socialism at all, but it's certainly reflective of the bible belt's war on fun.

  • I'd be interested to see actual facts and argumentation to back that up, fighterinferno. Unconstitutional Government Control is certainly favored by socialists, and prohibition itself, as well as continued attack on capitalistic liberties is more closely associated with American Progressiveism. Prohibition was led by progressives. It was certainly encouraged by B-belt Southern Baptists have since had a strict stance on alcohol. But if you look at the history you'll see it was never their war.

  • Europe is socialist and they dont have all these unfair extreme alcohol laws. Its also legal there in some parts for responsible law abiding citezens to use marijuana. in those "Socialist" countries, 18 year olds who are old enough to vote and die for their country have the right to drink! They also get free healthcare as one of their services. I guess socialists are really bad huh?

  • I don't think Socialism means what you think it does.

  • "What's more, they have to place their orders at least 24 hours in advance. So if a bar runs out of vodka on Friday night, they can't replenish supplies until Monday."

This isn't true. It's just a matter of how busy the ABC store you deal with is. I've placed alcohol orders and picked them up within 2 hours.

  • USA = Fail country....

  • . . . not even mentioning the laws regarding guns in ABC-licensed places!

In Virginia, most adults can walk around with a handgun on their hip, and go into a cafe and have a drink, with no problem unless they act badly. That is, UNLESS they have a court-issued Concealed Handgun Permit and are carrying concealed. If they do, they are not even allowed to walk into a restaurant that is licensed to serve them a glass of wine with their meal.

Cops, of course, may and do arrest you anyway!

  • Vabc are the mother fuckers of all government. They illegalize all basic human rights.

  • no flaming dr.peppers or boiler makers

    Damn you Virginia!

  • Wow, Virginia must suck

  • It does.

  • @SullyPie08 No, america sucks.

  • That's seriously screwed up.

  • why is it screwed up? Its trying to HELP YOU!!!

  • especially since so many people cant help themselves. SOMEONE HAS TO DO IT FOR THEM!

  • I don't drink myself but I believe that people should have the freedom to run their businesses as they see fit. All this government regulation not only looses the business money but the state as well since they cannot tax what is not sold

  • SOO MUCH FREEEEDOOOOMM!!!

  • From what I learned from my Virginian Roommate, Virginia is the shittiest state in the country. I hope to never have to go there again.

  • What, you're basing your prejudice on something your roommate said? You must be clever

  • Well, not only from what he has said, but also other things that I have heard about Virginia Law. I don't remember everything, but my old room mate was always rattling on about "that would be illegal in Virginia. He seemed quite proud that the government was taking away all of their rights.

  • wow...this is crazy. i'm glad i don't live in virginia

  • na erthoun na ta kanoun ayta sthn ellada tha tous paroun me ths petres

  • im glad i live in florida

  • i'm glad i live in England

  • I"m glad I live in baghdad! Wait, fuck. No I'm not.

  • Living in Virginia, and having been a bartender in Virginia, I can tell you that the ABC is terrible. They set you up for failure, and they seem to WANT to have people lose their liquor license. A major overhaul is needed, especially so that the northern part of the state can compete with Maryland and DC.

  • I live in the beer state of Wisconsin and if any of these laws in VA would be passed, it would tick off WI drinkers. It would make those at the Southern tip of WI go to IL to drink if any of these VA style regulations are passed.

  • Great Video!

  • i enjoy paying a premium to drink at the clarendon ballroom.

  • how do pitchers and beer buckets stack up to the regulations? I can order a pitcher that contains 7-9 beers and drink it to myself legally, same with a bucket of 6 beers.
