There's a lot more of a difference between metal and jazz than just technique, there's also the performance aspect. Metal is very rehearsed, very thought out in advance, because the beats are meant to be played exactly the same way every time. Rigid, structured. Jazz is almost the opposite, and while it's not always true, some jazz bands never play the same song the same way twice.
Both styles require a solid beat laid down by a competent drummer, but neither is required to be "challenging".
i think everyone should just enjoy the music and learn something new. good on people who put instructional videos up for everyone to learn from. salute to you all. and metal is awesome. jazz is amazing. music is awesomely amazing .
i play these fills with the ride cymbal dude.. come on get some coordination if u wanna play jazz. jazz is much harder than metal in that you need much more independence. any jazz drummer can play metal because they have great technique as well ass coordination
@xlhotlx It's you... you can't really hear if a tom is out of tune, cause you can toon them into D's or lower.. if u want.. but a D is usually fine... for a floor tom.
@thecravenator42069 OMG!! he does!! and his voice.anybody remember Matt Frewer(MTV's Max Headroom) he whips his head around like Matt did OMG i am LMFAO!!Rolling here!!!
Why is everybody arguing about metal/jazz? they're both as challenging, and not for just those reasons, all these people who just think that metal is about stamina, are completely missing the point, it's so much more than that, i'm a metal drummer looking into jazz styles because it really interests me,and maybe i can incorporate jazz stuff into my own drumming, at the same time, jazz takes a great deal of endurance too, there's no need for all this arguing an ignorance to each others styles.
@mwstakyle couldn't of said it better myself. also. metal wouldn't exist without jazz, Double bass was originally created for jazz. Not saying it wouldn't have been thought up ever, but that's where the roots are. Everyday, we see triplet grooves rooted in all sorts of music. Metal is to me, just another way of feeling the rhythm. Jazz has its complex coordination, and soul, while metal has its chops and presence
@zuma5278255424 Exactly, blast beats originated in jazz too, just because something comes from one style doesn't mean it can never work in other styles, it's what you do with all these varied influence that makes you an interesting musician ya know?
@mwstakyle I hate that metal bands are always trying to be louder and louder. Good music doesn't need to be in high volume. In fact, playing complex stuff in low volume is an art most metal musicians don't posses
@4madman4 generally they aren't trying to be louder, that's the mastering 'loudness war' it isn't really to do with the bands, more the label, when the band finish an album the label get it mastered and it's become a trend to have the CD mastered louder than the band before, when it comes to recording loudness doesnt make a difference, no matter how loud you have your guitar/drums/etc, they always get turned down in the mix if needs be. More to the point, you're generalising massively
@4madman4 some bands go all out, sure, that's their style, but not only is that nothing to do with the ''loudness'' of the band, the lack of dynamics is part of some styles of metal, not all metal is like that, there are plenty of metal bands out there who play complex, dynamic sections of music in contrast to the loud and heavy stuff, just because you've not heard it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
@mwstakyle i found an amazing band its a mix of jazz and metal called cynic look up the newer stuff its better i suggest the king of those who know by them
@PAINRULEZ Cynic is amazing but I have to disagree that their newer stuff is better. Their original album Focus is more musical, and jazzier (i think so) though harder. Check out Animals as Leaders
drumming isn't about what looks good or what is suppose to look good its about playing your best no matter if your good or not and loving what u do and having fun man .. its all good
I disagree. You should know theory, it's probably the most important thing in music. If you didn't know theory you wouldn't know how fast or loud to play. You wouldn't know rhythm or counts either.
this is just an intro to jazz fills. once you get into jazz, you have to learn to matcht he fill to the style of jazz. To all my fellow metalheads out there, i play both jazz and metal, they are both hard, but jazz is harder. derek roddy and may other metal drummers are jazz drummers originally and if you watch roddy and kolias they implement it into their playing.
If you mean four on the floor during the jazz beat, then you're mistaken. Keeping four on the floor is only to keep time. That's the bassist's job. The bass drum in jazz should only be used to accent the horn hits.
that greatly depends on the group you're playing with and the style of the music. If you're playing, for example, Basie with a Big Band, four on the floor is almost a necessity.
He should have at least acknowledged that dynamics are important in making these fills sound real and full. If you play them all at one volume as he has, they sound very flat.
The only thing that makes this lesson is the guy teaching it and the annoying way he talks! If you changed the cymbal groove he plays to any good rock groove and actually play the fills at a realistic tempo it would sound much better. But I believe this lesson is geared towards beginners who probably have no idea what the fuck you guys are talking about like blast beats!
fuck jazz? are you stupid man? :D metal is hard to play, but good jazz is harder!! the best drummers in the world were the jazz players... almost every good drummers have formation in jazz man!
metal if good and tough, but jazz is awesome and very interesting, meta is all about speed and blasting or whatever endurance, but jazz is about fills time and groove and tempo.
Metal is about tempo and timing as well. It's hard to blast at 210 if you can't keep time. I think musically Jazz and Metal are the two most comprehensive genres of music to study.
yeah i guess so too. but u know most jazz players are like their always keeping it easy and cool while metal is like keeping it solid and loud while u keep up with the fast tempo. am i right bro?
@lmmsTenor13 You do realize that double bass setup that every metal drummer uses was started by a JAZZ drummer named Louie Bellson, don't you? Oh, wait you don't, of course. You're too busy worshiping your metal drummers all playing blast beats than taking the time to learn who one of the all-time greats like Louie Bellson was. Wake up and learn something.
Fuck 99% of blast beats. Almost every single one is ridiculously boring, yes. But if you can find a way to have some creativity with them they can sound nice.

I like how you all spend your time critiquing a beginner drum lesson. I have a new sticking technique for you guys, take the stick and shove it up your ass.
a good way to give your snare a fatter tone and less high overtones is by taking off snare wires...gavin harrison uses only 5 or 6 snare wires....makes your snare sound great
rock on mike! i remember you from tom lee music in vancouver......he's actually a KILLER DRUMMER!.........remember, this is a basic tuitional video....this series is an introduction to jazz - just like the other genres you see to the right of your monitor....happy playing drummers!
LOL! what a joke. this guy should learn how to play the ride cymbal before he even teaches a 3 year old...Wheres the quarter note pulse? no wonder hes giving out free drum lessons!
just one question...How do you get the sticks to bounce off the snare like that? When I used to go to my drum teachers house to take lessons, I can do drum rolls really good. But when I try to do it no my snare, its harder......why? This is a good video by the way. I love Jazz! Playing it on the drums is awesome.
Is that so? I don't know much about mixing and stuff like that.
My point is that a beginning jazz drummer who learns from this lesson will understand that it's common to pound his bass drum like this, develop bad habits and make his overall drumming sound like crap.
Nope. Get a nice sounding cymbal in your taste. Learn how to play it so it sounds smooth. There you have it. To mic drums up doesn't necessarily make the cymbal sound smooth.
Then what if it was a live show? Would he just keep doing that and sounding like the most uncoordinated drummer ever? He should have the versatility to be able to hit the bass drum super soft in order to get a jazz feel even from a mic that's turned up in the mix.
the drums here are really compressed. this happens AFTER he plays it, in the mixing room. you can tell he is playing really light, but the fact it is compressed makes it sound "boomy".
this is free drum tuitional material, not a jazz record.
i dont see why some drummers feel that sticking doesnt matter? if you want to break the limbs up for a complex fill, then it matters, or even a beat. rr = rl, so if you want to go rrllrrll, these can be played on the toms for different feels and patterns. playing just rlrlrlrl...wont sound the same. tell buddy rich that sticking doesnt matter! there are things you can do with different stickings at high tempo that you cant accomplish other ways. its like telling a guitarist, fingering dont mater
How could sticking not matter? Anything you play involves some order of notes split between hands, that's all that sticking is. You can't get around your kit properly playing nothing but single strokes and you certainly can't execute jazz without some stick control- hence, studying sticking!
There's a lot more of a difference between metal and jazz than just technique, there's also the performance aspect. Metal is very rehearsed, very thought out in advance, because the beats are meant to be played exactly the same way every time. Rigid, structured. 2: Mic it/them up.
3: Soundcheck.

Nope. Get a nice sounding cymbal in your taste. Learn how to play it so it sounds smooth. There you have it. To mic drums up doesn't necessarily make the cymbal sound smooth.

Dude, stop pounding your bass drum so hard. It loses the entire jazz feel when you bump it like a hard rock drummer.
FrameSticker 3 years ago
you're ridiculous hes not pounding his bass drum
CaviesPWN 3 years ago
It's on a mic.... It could just be too loud in the mix
iNsUpErAbLeZePhYr 3 years ago
Then what if it was a live show? Would he just keep doing that and sounding like the most uncoordinated drummer ever? He should have the versatility to be able to hit the bass drum super soft in order to get a jazz feel even from a mic that's turned up in the mix.

framesticker you are an idiot.

Nope. I'm just being realistic.

the drums here are really compressed. this happens AFTER he plays it, in the mixing room. you can tell he is playing really light, but the fact it is compressed makes it sound "boomy".
this is free drum tuitional material, not a jazz record.

i dont see why some drummers feel that sticking doesnt matter? if you want to break the limbs up for a complex fill, then it matters, or even a beat. rr = rl, so if you want to go rrllrrll, these can be played on the toms for different feels and patterns. playing just rlrlrlrl...wont sound the same. tell buddy rich that sticking doesnt matter! there are things you can do with different stickings at high tempo that you cant accomplish other ways. its like telling a guitarist, fingering dont mater

@billpeart
people think that sticking doesn't matter because blast beats don't require it. kids are dumb.

How could sticking not matter? Anything you play involves some order of notes split between hands, that's all that sticking is. You can't get around your kit properly playing nothing but single strokes and you certainly can't execute jazz without some stick control- hence, studying sticking!
