You could argue that Irvine never deserved to win a race. He only won 4 races, all in 99. In this race both McLarens retired, in Austria, Coulthard took Hakkinen off and made him fall to last, then Ferrari won it through pit stops. In Germany, Salo (who replaced injured Schumacher for 6 races) gave him the victory, and in Malaysia, Schumacher gave him the win. Glad he still wasted the opportunity of the title and theres no way he deserved it instead of Hakkinen. IMO An average overated driver.
The intriguing thing is, EI was forced to stay behind a trouble-hit MS in france 99, had he passed, that would have been 1 extra point. then Schu could have let him past in Japan and given him two more; three to overtake MH and take the crown. But on the other hand, when the team was focused on EI's bid, MS came back from a 7 race layoff and trounced him straight away. So a worthy WC, I think not
I don't know why so many people call him the laziest driver in the sport. NO WAY in hell can you come close to winning a race if you're lazy. It takes total focus and commitment to get even one win. Alain Prost is right about one thing when he was interviewed a few years ago: "There are no bad drivers in F1."
@Eldarion92 No, you're statement is just wrong. Schumacher let him win in Malaysia, not Japan and Schumacher was only back for two races. If you count the times Eddie let Schumacher past, I think you'll find he owed him at least that.
..if Ferrari hadnt fucked up things like France 99(they didnt let Irvine pass MS ..even if MS had something with his transmission..).and Europe 1999-bad pitstop.....lost so much time.)..I llike Eddie....he wasnt best and he maybe didnt deserved title..but..he was charismatic,palyboy,funny..and we miss it nowadays :)
It was great to see Irvine win his first Gp. Although the 4 wins he got in his career were always with a little luck. For eg I think in this race the McLarens both retired from 1 and 2 to make way for Eddie to win. But he fully deserved it. Awesome driver

You should know that Schumi let him 2 times win a race after his comeback, so your statement is just wrong.
