The only thing that stopped me from walking out of the theater was Aaron Eckhart, and my soft-spot for epic battle scenes and explosions, however, this movie does absolutely nothing inventive with the alien-invasion film genre. Out of 10, I'd give it a 5 for the effects. Though, I will admit, that opening shot when the aliens reveal themselves in the water is badass.
Nothing inventive? The aliens have an alien anatomy instead of a human plus-minus parts one. They come from the sea and fight on the ground with air support instead of swoop down with death rays. The filming style and setting is gritty and realistic. The alien tech isn't farfetched and people/aliens use viable tactics.
How much more inventive can you get without taking away the aliens and invasion all together? Perhaps you'd like your next zombie movie to NOT feature zombies?
@nagual1992 I did enjoy the realism of the action, but other than Aaron Eckhart. There wasn't any character in the movie that had any ounce of substance worth my time at all. The action was spectacular, but I gradually became desensitized by the gratuitous explosions, gunfire, and yelling. It reminded me a bit of a combination of Black Hawk Down, which I love, and Transformers 2, which was terrible. The badassery of the action just B A R E L Y lifts this movie from being a complete bore.
Characters could have been better, bu I still found the acting itself to be rather good. At least the kids surprised me. I do admit the script wasn't the best, but I don't think it was as bad as people rag on it as either. IMO it was just that the effects, concept, action, and realism of it all sorta made the sub par script a let down.
The actors themselves did well with what they had though, IMO.

The character development was horrible as most character life span is about 30 min in to the movie this includes generic/important character which ends up with some how 5 soldiers (neither had background story to support them) can some how survive a horde whilst all the other countrys combines military effort barely scratched the "alien invasion"
Just tell me why aliens who are smart enough to achieve interstellar travel in such numbers can be so dumb as to use some kind of "mothership" to control all its aerial vehicles? The movie totally defies logic and common sense...but maybe that's why it's so brainlessly fun to watch.

Wow, the human race must have been attacked by one of the worst military alien species in the Universe. I mean for a militarized high tec species they have terrible aim. And what kind of idiot would make 1 blob that controls most of your military vehicles?
I mean for an Alien Race that goes from planet to planet for "liquidized water" killing off indigenous species, they were terrible...
But then again who knows? Maybe humans are more superior at warfare? The probability is extremely low tho.
@DJBuckCallYo You see aliens as high tech race, they are like us they have leadership, a command posts etc their aim is terrible because this planet has an atmosphere do you even have any idea what effect our planet has on them, how can the probability be low? Imagine a weapon is surgically mounted to your arm and you are thrown onto an alien world with the effects on your body unknown and what then enemy is like. When we de-forest an area we kill of the animals, so it's likely they would.
@TheCdeboy I didn't take gravity under account, but still, the explanation for one blob for a control tower for all the vehicles is still quite ridiculous. I am surprised that the humans managed to take it down with two missiles without analyzing the critical points. What if it was normal for aliens to surgically attach weapons on their troops? Who knows? They still seemed quite inexperienced even though they managed to travel from planet to planet.
@DJBuckCallYo Think about it, it was a giant control center high probability that the aliens were controlling them from a safe location or they are operated by computers well if you were going to take out a radio tower you would destroy the satellites in essence that's what they were doing, we can travel from planet to planet doesn't mean as soon as we land we are fine and know what were doing no training can prepare you for going to an alien world, perhaps they were just fresh recruits or shit.
@TheCdeboy I mean that the control ship that the aliens built was WAY TO undefended and Vulnerable, I mean it took only 2 human missiles to take it out. The Humans did not even know the schematics or weak points of the structure, I really thought that the Aliens were way to under powered in the movie. I mean would you seriously leave your control tower out in the open like that? And would you seriously construct it that terribly? These aliens are a nomadic race for goodness sake.
@DJBuckCallYo They had an entire army defending the control base, it was in the sewers! It was only when the humans started attacking it that they tried to take it away, it's essentially like the humans after their defeat creating an unprotected BOP in the Mojave Desert. Who knows what the aliens are good at, or the time limit they had to construct it. The aliens had no fuel left they were desperately attacking Earth because they need the fuel, maybe that's why it was poorly constructed?
@TheCdeboy No, but you said an "entire army defended the base" I'm pretty sure if the entire west coast alien invasion force defended the core, they would have detected the squad. Obviously thirty aliens and a couple probes don't make up the entire army.

This movie is really good! Not your typical "watch the regular hero joe and friends save the world by themselves while the military does nothing film". I really enjoyed watching this movie and seeing the military as heroes for once.

This movie was the fucking worst! Here are 4 reasons why it sucked. 1. The characters including; the nigerian doctor, the geeky black guy, the guy who has never led a squad before, the tough chick, and who can forget the guy who is too old to be fighting but is fighting anyway. 2. The typical soldier to soldier pep talk. 3. The noticable fake blood and fake dirt on everyones faces which changed spots on their faces from scene to scene. 4. The scene where they all get in a fucking bus
I liked it. Lots of action and some great street battle scenes. Not a chick flick though. No ones kissing and theres no love story involved. I think some of the people here complaining about character development wanted to see stuff like that. Sorry but this film is about staying alive. No time for romance.

It's the 1st alien contact movie I've seen in years that DOESN'T follow the textbook alien encounter movie. Aliens land, completely destroy all of earth's forces with their superior technology, scientific plot twist, aliens die or leave. In this movie we go to fucking war. Our invaders are devistating, but vulnerable. It shows active combat between us and them, not one ended destruction

This movie was OK, enjoyable but not memorable. Some really good scenes that inspired me, and it looked great. I probably would have loved it if it had more story involved in it or if I hadn't seen truly great films that fit this category like "Independence Day" before. I don't feel like I wasted my time watching it, but I'm glad I didn't pay to see it.

What is with the Aliens attack cuz all Aliens are bad? uhh actually they came to Earth cuz Earth is appearently the only planet with liquified H2O as stated in the movie...it had nothing to do with wanting to wipeout Earth.
Aliens attack, because ofcourse as america points out, aliens ARE evil. Aliens turn out to be robotic things... Aliens have same or less technology than us? Our weapons beat aliens. Cliche characters, not best acting, good effects though bit rough at times.. I'd say storyline 1/5 acting 3/5 visuals 4/5. So averaging out about a 3/5 aswell. But if you want more than explosions go watch Super 8 instead.

@Pivotman1 2 of the things you mentioned are cliches. Effects were pretty good actually, I didn't see any independence day speeches. All I saw for speeches were motivational. Lol you should get your eyes checked if you cant see whats going on with a mildly shaking camera that I thought was a nice touch to suck you into the action. Oh yes and I believe the proper term is pyrotechnics and yes there were allot used but well I think they a great fill in for real explosions caused by live ordnance

@TheCdeboy I didn't take gravity under account, but still, the explanation for one blob for a control tower for all the vehicles is still quite ridiculous. I am surprised that the humans managed to take it down with two missiles without analyzing the critical points. What if it was normal for aliens to surgically attach weapons on their troops? Who knows? They still seemed quite inexperienced even though they managed to travel from planet to planet.

@DJBuckCallYo Think about it, it was a giant control center high probability that the aliens were controlling them from a safe location or they are operated by computers well if you were going to take out a radio tower you would destroy the satellites in essence that's what they were doing, we can travel from planet to planet doesn't mean as soon as we land we are fine and know what were doing no training can prepare you for going to an alien world, perhaps they were just fresh recruits or shit.

@TheCdeboy I mean that the control ship that the aliens built was WAY TO undefended and Vulnerable, I mean it took only 2 human missiles to take it out. The Humans did not even know the schematics or weak points of the structure, I really thought that the Aliens were way to under powered in the movie. I mean would you seriously leave your control tower out in the open like that? And would you seriously construct it that terribly? These aliens are a nomadic race for goodness sake.

It was only when the humans started attacking it that they tried to take it away, it's essentially like the humans after their defeat creating an unprotected BOP in the Mojave Desert. Who knows what the aliens are good at, or the time limit they had to construct it. The aliens had no fuel left they were desperately attacking Earth because they need the fuel, maybe that's why it was poorly constructed?

@DJBuckCallYo Look, most of their army are pushing forward they have a good number back, with all the explosions and gunshots etc, when it's pitch black with smoke and all that it's hard to see the helicopter plus what do we know of the aliens senses? how was it a superior technological ship?! they desperately attacked Earth for the fuel i doubt they had enough resources to make the damn thing! Because they couldn't send hundreds of men over a destroyed city doesn't mean they don't have an army.

The characters including; the nigerian doctor, the geeky black guy, the guy who has never led a squad before, the tough chick, and who can forget the guy who is too old to be fighting but is fighting anyway. 2. I liked it. Lots of action and some great street battle scenes. Not a chick flick though. No ones kissing and theres no love story involved. I think some of the people here complaining about character development wanted to see stuff like that. Sorry but this film is about staying alive. No time for romance.

@SpectaStudios see if you actually watched the film and before i say this i would warn this is a SPOILER ALERT COMING NEXT the air force is actually unmanned drones like the predators we have so we need a command and control center to use them its soooo yes they need that ship to save more solders from needless dying also near the end of the film it tells you that the entire fob was moved back to protect there assets now that would mean that the artillery would have been moved to that location

watched it halfass at best acting . was so so aliens nothing to brag about cool airships thats about it . i also saw Skyline and it was a better story with a solid ending and better aliens . and the part were the stealth fighter hitting the giant spaceship with a nuke was better than anything in battle .

Yeah this movie is loaded with cliches and textbook character design, but it was still a breathe of fresh air. It's the 1st alien contact movie I've seen in years that DOESN'T follow the textbook alien encounter movie. Aliens land, completely destroy all of earth's forces with their superior technology, scientific plot twist, aliens die or leave. In this movie we go to fucking war. Our invaders are devistating, but vulnerable. It shows active combat between us and them, not one ended destruction

This movie was OK, enjoyable but not memorable. Some really good scenes that inspired me, and it looked great. I probably would have loved it if it had more story involved in it or if I hadn't seen truly great films that fit this category like "Independence Day" before. I don't feel like I wasted my time watching it, but I'm glad I didn't pay to see it.

Aliens attack, because ofcourse as america points out, aliens ARE evil. Aliens turn out to be robotic things... Aliens have same or less technology than us? Our weapons beat aliens. Cliche characters, not best acting, good effects though bit rough at times.. I'd say storyline 1/5 acting 3/5 visuals 4/5. So averaging out about a 3/5 aswell. But if you want more than explosions go watch Super 8 instead.

@Pivotman1 2 of the things you mentioned are cliches. Effects were pretty good actually, I didn't see any independence day speeches. All I saw for speeches were motivational. Lol you should get your eyes checked if you cant see whats going on with a mildly shaking camera that I thought was a nice touch to suck you into the action. Oh yes and I believe the proper term is pyrotechnics and yes there were allot used but well I think they a great fill in for real explosions caused by live ordnance
