  • Oh definitely Jerry Goldsmith's score makes the movie, isn't that true of most movies? The score makes the magic.

  • Awesome! just awesome.I know this has been used in some NASA films.Loved this movie first time I saw it.

  • i just luv this scene nuff said :)

  • Can't stop listening to this!

  • The aliens could be down below not up in space you knucjleheads.

  • "Tonight We Launch!"

  • To those ragging on this movie - you wouldn't ask a novelist, especially the one who delivered the smash hit of the previous year, to publish their next book with the climax only half-written - but that's *exactly* what Paramount did to Joe Dante with this movie. Every scene up until they finally encounter Wak and Neek perfectly captures that age and is every bit as sublime as the soundtrack (I defy anyone not to get goosebumps at 1:44 in particular)...

  • @turricaned The Goonies was good, but it played the "outsider" kids angle for laughs most of the time (making Chunk do the "truffle shuffle" was pretty true to life, but it felt mean-spirited). *This* was the real outsider kids' movie, and if Paramount had held their nerve I believe it would have achieved the "true classic" status that it's premise, soundtrack and performances deserved.

  • @turricaned Oh - and Steve Jackson? What a jerk - a *bad* case of elephantitis of the ego. ;)

  • For those of you who are interested this music is written with a repeated 6/4 followed by 3/8 time signature

  • I studied composition at music college. When I should have been listening to my Boulez, Berio and Berg I was listening to this :-)

It reminds me of how when we're young anythig is possible and time seems endless... thumbs up if you agree ! Goonies Stand By Me Explorers Labyrinth The Neverending Story Lost Boys E.T. The Extra Terrestrial Princess Bride Back To The Future Big Trouble In Little China Ghostbusters Ferris Buellers Day Off Legend
  • @MelbaToast454 I agree movies like this are timeless and they never age cause they are so universal and the thing is all little boys and girls want to go off in space and become astronaut like I wanted to be when I saw this movie

  • There are movies that i love just because of the musical score. AND THIS IS ONE OF THEM!!!

  • i built one of them but just before blast off health and safety stopped me and fined me for not wearing a seatbelt. :(

  • They need to do a remake of this exceptionally exsquisite piece of art!

  • This sonjg makes me blub like a baby everytime I hear. Haven't got a clue why.... it's so god damned beautiful in the intro.

  • Makes me miss my youth when I watch this movie. Imagine travelling to the stars like that!

  • I am 23 yrs old and still love this movie :P

  • @MrMixalis1987 I am 36 and I love this movie!

  • Love this music and fits the visuals perfectly. Typical Goldsmith really.

  • Awesome! One of the best kids movies ever made. Even without the visuals of this scene, this music always makes me recall my own childhood antics. Jerry Goldsmith (and Joe Dante) are just great at what they do. :)

  • OH man brings back memories!

  • River R.I.P

  • "Tonight We Launch"

  • Too bad the film is still available but the soundtrack isn't. I wish it were the other way around.

  • Classic!!! I put that space ship into my animation! Pretty cool. Star Wars with Thunder Road!

  • FANTASTIC!

  • The reason you can't completly synch music and video is simple, jrels83.

The soudtrack CD is played with the correct speed, as intended by the composer for the movie in theater.

But on video (same for VHS or DVD), movies are always slightly speeded-up since they're shot at 24 frames per seconds on film and this not match with usual video frequency.

That is also the reason why sometimes the voices on Tv sound higher than in theater if they are not technically corrected for broadcasting.

  • Not exactly a correct reason.

Film is sped up only in the case of PAL and SECAM video transfers to get 24 FPS to match the refresh of 50 Hz (two fields = one frame, so 50/2 is 25 FPS).

NTSC video, OTOH, is roughly 60 Hz refresh, which is roughly 30 FPS (29.97 to be precise). You can't speed 24 FPS up to 30 without affecting the pitch of the sound unacceptably, so 3:2 pulldown conversion is done during the film-to-video transfer instead, which maintains the frame rate but allows film-to-video.

  • A more valid reason is that the session recordings of the score, which may also be used to compile the soundtrack album, can be edited many times to match with work prints during post production.

The edited music used for the work prints and the final print usually does not end up on the soundtrack album; usually a polished edit of the session recordings that is optimized specifically for release on an album is used instead.

  • You may be right.

Though, Joe Dante himself considers EXPLORER as a movie with unfinalized edition, since the producers released the movie before he did work on some points of edit still bothering him. Dante always said in interviews he was furious the producers released the movie the way it was. For him, it's more an advanced work-in-progress.

  • According to this, Goldsmith's music might have been edited and cut but not as much as many other scores.

Whatever, Goldsmith'score is great and the movie is fun and beloved the way it is.

  • Not being edited as much is only half of it.

Remember that, when making a soundtrack album, the album producer, usually the composer, goes back to the original session tapes and makes a new polished edit meant for release on a soundtrack album. This edit would never be used for the film; it is meant for release on an album.

The session recordings can have a both film edit and an album edit made from them and both will be different compared to the actual session recordings.

  • They did cut a lot of this flic. I think if I got my facts right, THEY told Joe Dante to SLAP a quick ending on the film. I did like the movie as a kid, BUT now it is crap. IT makes no sense, BUT do love Jerry Goldsmith's score, and DO have Dick Millers' Theme that EVERYONE WANTS!!! I am a lucky one.

  • @UFOSPACE1999

    which ones is that

  • @UFOSPACE1999

you have to tell where you can get it ?

  • when Dick Miler is landing the helicopter and then taking off again. THAT theme. The dick miller theme. On the cd it is called the discovery. I don't know why they have not released the WHOLE CD. PLEASE take away the crappy word songs and give me all of Goldsmiths music.

I bought on Ebay..........Will sell. HIGH PRICE because it was a high priced item on Ebay.... HIt me back.

  • TONIGHT WE LAUNCH!!!

  • Amazing film and great music too

  • listen to them strings awesome!!!

  • To bad the kid who played the rocket scientist died in 1993.

  • This movie brings out the youth in me. It reminds me of when I was a kid and how my friends and I use to do some wild stuff back in the day.

The music pretty much says it all in that you can do whatever you put your mind to.

  • This brings tears to my eyes. I grew up with this movie and its score!

    It's all about possibilities!

  • @katey1dog

The possibilities are endless now they are finding planets that could sustain life and alien at that, so you are dead right . But the problem is they need geniuses like these kids here to design spacecraft that can get us to those places, especialy now!

  • @katey1dog

    Im not kidding either!

  • @katey1dog

ESPECIALY now nasa has now given up spending on space exploration which in my opinion is a very unwise decision. It should be one of our main priorities in human life is to explore, other wise we would just stagnate on our own little world which we are crapping up anyway..

  • @mrhiide

Honestly, with our current debt, the wars, and Obama starting and sustaining another, it's time to worry about our own affairs before we start worrying about a deader planet than ours.

  • @katey1dog

I agree with you but we should atleast be finding better and more economical ways of space travel for future exploration :)

  • @mrhiide I believe NASA didn't "give up," they just had their plans squashed by Obama, who canceled the next rocket program, I believe called Orion. Basically, Obama killed the space program, and now we have to rely on the Russians in order to get our own astronauts into space. Just one of the many reasons Obama should not be re-elected.

  • Great Score, BUT wouldn't it be nice IF WE HAD THE ENTIRE SCORE!!! The Dick Miller Theme is kewl, but not on the CD!!! I hate the powers in charge for NOT releasing the ENTIRE SCORES OF JERRY GOLDSMITH, JOHN WILLIAMS and JOHN BARRY.

  • Thank You Dante- Thank You Goldsmith- it´s a part of my life

  • Explorers was one of my fave movies growing up. If there IS a remake for it in the works, I'd like to know. Technology has advanced so much since then...

  • the movie has its grat moments but goldsmith soundtrack was over the quality of the film

  • @yidneth agreed soundtrack was epic, then the movie goes for cheesy ghostbusters green rubber aliens.anyhow great score, asfell as totalrecall theme!

  • this creation is absolutely brilliant. i can't even imagine what it would feel like if this music was cued to aerial photography, low-level and fast, over wonderful locations of adventure

  • Anything from the great Goldsmith is perfect!

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH what a music

    bringing back the 80's

I just feel like a kid now.

  • I loved this film as a child, and this score has and will always bring a nostalgic tear to my eye.

  • Brilliant. Thank you for posting.

  • A small sample of the great composer who was Jerry Goldsmith. Thanks masterful for your music.

  • a wonderfully energetic and inspiring piece of music. pure goldmith. love it

  • Absolutely brilliant and creative on the part of Goldsmith, you can almost feel Goldsmith was having having a good day when he wrote to this wonderful scene. Explorers is a very underrated movie. This Goldsmith score SOARS, there will never be another like him.

  • Post the Have a Nice Trip cue plz, this is my favorite Dante/Goldsmith collaboration:)
