it's also possible that there is something wrong with the optical disc drive. that also starts up when you power it on, as I remember it. but it could be the Hard disk because that basically has a disc platter that would also make this kind of freaky noise. i remember someone saying that if your optical disc drive is messed up, the discs you put inside can scrap up against the insides of your system. it also could be a broken fan.
