  • what is it?

  • what is it

  • thanks for posting!. i only recently discovered EC while i was researching cloth diapers (i'm a nanny, not yet a parent - so never been pregnant , but i've raised a lot of kids). when i was traveling in china some years back, i noticed that babies there all wore bottoms w/a split down the crotch and whenever they had to go, they would squat or their mums would hold them over a trash bin or the side of the road. it seemed so odd to me then, but it makes total sense! thanks for sharing.

  • I just started using EC with my 14 year old daughter, it works wonderful! I use the cueword "AHHHHHHHHH!!!" I had to start homeschooling her, but it was worth it!

  • I just started EC with my daughter and she goes almost every single time. I LOVE IT!!

  • have you tried buying little undies and taking in at the sides?

my mum had to make mine casue i was toilet trained at 9 months

  • Grace, I have 2 kids, one crawled at 4 months, the other at 10 months, one walked at 9 months, the other not till 22 months, they are all very different :)

EC, yes I have heard of it but not tried it, love to hear how you go. I also wanted to ask, is Lacey wearing babylegs in the pic of her on the potty? I have heard from a lot of people that they are really useful in helping EC

  • Yes they are my form of babylegs, I made them out of teen knee high socks, great for ECing. And about undies in your next comment, that is a great idea, I bought some size 2's that are way to big, I will take int he sides. She will look so cute with little undies on.

  • cool, sometimes being able to sew really is handy. (use it all the time since I have one tall skinny child with darts in all his pants and one slightly rounder child who has increased hems on most of hers lol)

I took size 2-3s in for my daughter too :)

btw, where is Australia are you? I am a Brisbane girl living in rural Victoria.

  • Its very interesting to hear, ive sorta heard about it but couldnt put a name to it! You do whats Best for Lacey and dont let anyone tell you otherwise!

I personally didnt do that for my son, but, it would be interesting to see if it happens with our baby on the way when he or she is born and gets older!

  • Wow, that's really a neat idea. People really train their babies to do this from birth? It sounds like a bit of work at first, but like it would also pay off big time.

I'm glad that you guys are having so much success with it. I'll have to try it on Ethan and see how it goes! Thanks for the cool info, Grace.

  • Well they don't like to day "train" because they say it is just a way of communicating their needs to us, apparently its easier from birth because the babies haven't been "trained" to go in their nappies. Yeh Lacey now starts whinging and when I put her on the potty she goes, its like shes letting me know its coming.

  • Yeh great, i'll go and have my tea now!!!

    Love D XX

  • Watch at your own risk Dad, lol :)

  • oh yea....yay lacey!!! she'll be a pro at the potty b4 she can even walk!!!

  • Yeh it is so cute when I am at the shops and we go into the parents toilet and I sit her up on it and she just goes, its so funny how they just know.

  • never heard of it b4.....how old can u start this? my sons 3 months...is that to soon?

  • No actually its a great time, they say its harder when they get over 6 months because they have been "trained" to go in their nappies. The younger the better, people do it from birth.

  • bless her she will start to crawl wen your not expecting it my daughter is 6 months and shes crawling now lol

  • Wow she's a clever girl! Thats really neat! I've never heard of EC before but thank you for sharing with us! :o)

  • No worries, I hadn't heard of it either until about 2 weeks ago.

  • Thats very interesting, ive never heard of that. I think its a great idea~

  • That is SO INTERESTING! Wow! I never heard of it. Good for you guys!!

  • I think the EC is awesome have never heard about it but if it works for you then YEA! I think more people should look into it It would def help save money not having to buy as many diapers and wipes...Good Luck with lacey! she is adorable =)

  • Re Elimination Communication: Wow what a great idea I wish I had heard of that when my daughter was young. If it works for you then why not? Lacey will eventually be able to pop herself down on her potty without any fear of it which is fantastic. I'm not sure how I would go with my son though- I would probably get peed on lol. He is only 8 weeks old though so I will cross that bridge when I get to it...unless you know how to use EC for boys?

  • I have read stories of people ECing with boys and one of the hold they do is with the babies back to your chest and hold onto their thighs, over the toilet or sink or bowl. Apparently it works but I wouldn't have a clue. The blog "Sew Liberated" are doing EC with their son Finn and he is only a few weeks old and they just hold him over the potty.

  • At Lacey's age it is very uncommon for babies to be able to get from a laying position to a sitting position. Until she is ready to crawl that won't happen so Lacey is right on track =) As for the rolling over I wouldn't be concerned about that either, she will do it all in good time =)

  • Oh good, I didn't know that, thanks.

  • Wow! What an achievement for Lacey and for you! I have never heard of EC and am quite interested. Thanks for posting this info.

    Mary (& Anthony 8 months +1)

  • Hey Mary, no worries, I thought others might like to hear our story re: EC. I hope you and Anthony are going well.

  • I should add that the size 1 fit her from 9/10 mths :) They are $3 a pair :)

  • AWSOME! Thanks for that, I will go down to best and less tomorrow. ANd congrats on little Laycee!! great effort.

  • Hi Grace, I have been ECing with my Laycee from 9/10mths old. She is now 22mths and we have been officially toilet training since last Monday. She is doing great, much easier than it was with my son! I bought some towelling training pants in Best N Less in sz 1. They fit well and I pop a nappy insert in them when we go to the shops just in case! Some junk shop undies will shrink down nicely in the drier too LOL. Good Luck, it is very rewarding, I feel so proud of my Laycee :)

  • Wow, EC sounds cool. My partner worked in China for about 10 years, and they don't use nappies. He said they just seem to know when the baby is going to go & hold they baby out over the floor or whatever then just clean up the mess. When you think of their population, it obviously works for them. Imagine the amount of disposable nappies that is saving the environment/world? My little feller is now 11 weeks old & wees & poos every five minutes ..... so I don't think it will work for him (yet)

  • Ha ha, yeh they do don't they. In china the kids walk arounf with pants that don't have a crotch in them so you see these little bare bums, lol.

  • Do they sale " Pull Ups" where you live ?

  • Yep, prob not in Laceys size but I'd rather a non-disposable option

  • I had a neighbor who did EC and it worked very well for them, I've never tried it, but way to go Lacey/ Mummy Grace!

  • Thanks

  • I think it's great that you're doing this! I'm six months pregnant and I just started reading about EC. I'm going to observe my daughter's behavior from birth to see what she seems to want to do, since every child is different. I think that's the point, not to force or "train" the baby to do anything, but to let the her lead me like your daughter did by not going in her napppy. How exciting!

  • So so true, you put it very well. I have read a blog of a lady who has just had a son and was thinking of doing EC but was going to observe to see first and she found that he hated being in a wet nappy and his behaviour has changed and he is much happier now that she does EC with him. Her blog is called Sew Liberated, you might be able to google it.

  • I actually really like your hair in this video!!

  • me too!!

  • Thanks :)

  • really? I had had a shower about an hour before and it was just...i dunno. Well I am growing it, I have had the back cut every now and then so I don't get a mullet. Thanks.

  • EC sounds really interesting, its amazing that it can work for babies so young.

    Thanks for sharing that :)

Definitely something to keep in mind

  • you should make ur own nickers!! and trainin nappies!!

  • I am but I keep getting disheartened because I have already stuffed up two times and am wasting material with all the mistakes, I just can't seem to get it right. They do sell them online (very rare though) but they are like $30US each!!

  • its not such a crazy idea, i have heard of EC before and i think if its working for lacey why not try it , it will make less washing of nappies for you, do further videos updating us on how its going, maybe you could sew some training pants for lacey seeing as you cant find any in her size i am sure you will come up with something.

  • Yeh, I just can't seem to find a good pattern, I have tried and failed twice but I'll keep practicing. I will continue letting you know with more videos.

  • I think its a great idea! its giving her a head start, & its a wonderful thing for her, and for the parents (cheaper, easier ect), I know it probably sounds mean but I often cringe when I see a 2 or 3 year old in nappies, but I know they all do it at they're own pace, but i think its better at Lacy's age because she probably doesn't fully comprehend what she is doing, so she doesn't have the chance to refuse it like a toddler would, so when she is a toddler it will seem normal to her! well done!

  • yeh my thought too, she won't refuse because she will be so used to the potty, it will be second nature.

  • i think its quite clever, i mean if she wont go in her nappy why not try it they way when you wont have to train her when she is a toddler and starts to get defiant!

  • Exactly what I was thinking, she will already be familiar with the potty.

  • your vids have really opened a new window for me :) i mean im 16 and no where near ready to have kids, but i WILL be using cloth nappies on my kids and i might even give this a try lol :D

  • I always wondered how the mothers addressed issues of the sort in third world countries and in ancient times. I never knew that! Thanks for the education! its very interesting! I will read up on it, sounds like an interesting read! Its good to hear from you it has been a while good to see things are going well, I hope to make videos soon of my little one and talk about skin care for babies with eczema and such keep an eye out for me!!

  • I will but let me know when you do so I can watch. See, you learn a new thing (or two) everyday! :)

  • you inspire me to make videos! i guess i underestimated my Allison a little! shes 6 months old and can sit on her own has been since she was 4 &1/2 months old! she just started crawling this past week! she can get herself into a sitting position from any position! she can pull herself up on anything! just last night she pulled herself up using the wall! i was shocked! she wants to walk so badly! her father, my fiance walked a 7 months of age! she does so much more i will have to start videos :)

  • Well let me know when you make a video and I will watch it. Thats great about your daughter, Lacey has a friend who is her age and he is way ahead like your little one, its funny how they all progress at different times.

  • and I was wondering something well ok it just popped into my head but when it comes time to do the actual potty training will she need you there to cue her to go and fight going on her own or would she just pick it up one day and start going by herself one day when she is able to walk maybe around 1 or 2 years.? This is very intreging (sp) to me I think I will try it when I have kids and do it around Lacey's age. I am going to definitely look onto this more. Thanks for sharing this.

    Hilary

  • No worries Hilary. I think that because she is familiar with the potty now it won't be such a big deal when I am completely potty training her when she is older. SOmetimes she goes now when I don't even cue her and just sit her on there so that shouldn't be a problem.

  • That is actually pretty awsome. I heard about that I think in Russia and I thought is was crazy these ladys holding ther newborn infants over a metal bucket, but the way you explain it and that Lacey wouldent poo in her diaper and she sits up well enough I think it is GREAT it has to be ncie not to have to change diapers all day long i think I would rather sit my kid on a otty than change a diaper anyday much cleaner. And I would think if she really didnt like it she wouldent do it.

  • Wow!! Go Lacey! I've definently heard if it a while back...people doing it from birth. I saw it on tv somewhere. I thought it was so crazy!! Its definently not something that I would personally do, but of course its not for everyone. I just want to enjoy my baby being a baby. And trying to "potty train" so early just seems like they would just be growing up way too fast! : ( But I give you major props for doing that with Lacey and I can't believe that she caught on so fast! Thats awesome!

  • Thanks, I know its definatley not for everyone but as I said, we just stumbled upon it and it actually makes life a little easier for us. I thought it was crazy too but now I'm the crazy one, lol!

  • Wow! Go Laci!!!!!!! This is really awesome!! No I have never heard of it before but it makes perfect sense. It's wonderful that you are doing it. I can't believe it's going so well for you! It sounds like a lot of hard work but it seems that Laci makes it easy, which is really good. Maybe I will look into this a little more for my son Jayden. He is almost 7 months old.

  • I know, I am subscribed to your videos, you do a great job with Jayden. You never know, he might like it. Lacey likes sitting on the potty and banging her hands (or toy) onto the potty to make some noise, its like a musical instrument to her, lol.

  • :) I've heard of EC'ing, I have a friend who has done it w/ her son since he was about 2 months old. Same situation, he wouldn't go in his diaper. He's now 8 months old they EC 24/7. I think it's a great idea, but not for everyone. It's a lot of work on the mom's part, especially if you don't have an interested baby. You are very lucky Laci has taken to it so well! KUDOS!!! :)

  • Yeh I agree, look if she wasn't into it then I wouldn't push it but it seems so natural and she goes when I put her on the potty. I'm not too fused about catching every single wee.

  • ec is our plan :)

  • Great!! Good luck with it.

  • I also part time EC with the little girl I mind. She comes with me to the washroom, and seemed interested in the potty (signing), so I pop her on when I am there. She started saying psssssst after I said I once! She did 2 wees and a poop on the first day. She is 1 year old. Works with older children too.

Now she doesn't cry while I am using the washroom (separation anxiety) she goes too!

There are no draw backs to EC, none.

  • There are no draw back to EC. Even if you only try once per day, you are still showing them that you understand their needs and validating that it is alright to use the toilet instead of diapers, which can help with potty training later.

So simple, really easy and kind of the most fun I've had in a while :)

  • can you give me the information that you read so I can learn more about it. That would be great for my son...with his poos.

  • 3 books to look at - "The Diaper-Free Baby" - "Infant Potty Training" - "Diaper Free

If you just type in Elimination Communication or Natural Infant Hygeine in google it will give you some sites too.

  • wow i have never heard of this! not crazy at all, i would just assume that it would be difficult for you to tell and have to run to the toilet everytime but it seems like its easy for you which is great! in reguards to undies, have you tried making any? i know your a great sewer!

  • wow thats amazing. ive never heard of that before. i dont think its crazy at all, i would only imagine that its hard for moms to tell and be able to run to the toilet everytime but it seems like its been easy for you, thats great! when she gets older she can brag about how she was using the potty at 7 1/2 months! hah. regaurds to undies, have you tried to make any? i know you an amazing sewer!

  • I have had 2 failed attempts so far, I am going to try again. Thanks.

  • I think it's the most amazing thing i have ever heard of. I wish I had known about it when my kids were little. Good on you Grace. And you are looking great, motherhood agrees with you. Keep up the good work girl.

  • Thanks, I am feeling pretty good too. I've even taught a few classes at the gym, boy have I lost my fitness.

  • It's a great idea. My mom did that with my younger sister but she just put her in a regular toilet like your daughter she would't poop on a diaper. let us know how it goes.

  • I haven't heard of that but it sounds AWESOME! How neat. I'm 37 weeks pregnant and am definately going to look into this for my little one.

  • There are a few good books out there, "The Diaper-Free Baby", "Infant Potty Training" and "Diaper Free". If your thinking about it, you should read one of these books.
