@TheRationalizer One thing that made the most sense to me about Islam was that I saw it as a much better way to live, a better way to think than I was living. The rules and self control are things the western world greatly lacks.
So even if I was wrong I saw it is a better lifestyle. I didn't have a profound "Emotional" reaction or any kind of miraculous event that convinced me. I accepted it over time, in stages.
Finding a better way to live is merely an inspiring factor. I find some of the teachings attributed to Jesus inspirational and therefore I adopted them, that doesn't mean that any claims as to his divine origin are true.
Liking something is not a reliable way to determine whether it is true or not. There are millions of people who are influenced by Hinduism, that doesn't mean the Earth came from a Lotus flower.
@TheRationalizer You are considering individual aspects of religious belief and not the belief as a whole.
Consider the fact that there are things in the Quran that no one knew until recently, not to mention that it is a linguistic miracle, the fact that a man changed the entire region in a short period and established a belief system that still exists. Something no one else has been able to achieve in History in such a scale.
It was the claims of scientific miracles in the Quran which attracted me to Islam in the first place. They all looked very impressive indeed. However, once I looked at them all I found not one of them to be genuine.
But staying on topic, does it matter whether 70:29-30 came from man or god? It is still without mercy for those female slaves is it not?
@TheRationalizer [2] There are many more things, anyone can argue individual points but without consideration of the whole then of course I see anyone not agreeing about the divine possibilities.
The shaytan will continue to whisper and literally hurl at you bricks of kufur. Since he now know that he has lost a follower. May Allaah Protect Us From The Accursed Shaytan Al Rageem
Stay firm in your salaat, fast, and the remembrance of Allaah.
MashAllah - thank you for sharing. Your story is like that of salmon swimming upstream at all costs to achieve their objective - you and your wife embraced Islam standing strong against the wave of global anti-Islam/Muslim hate-mongering. No Qur'ans in hotel rooms or Muslims with smiley faces knocking at your door to convert you - yet Islam is spreading amongst those who have a mind of their own and go beyond rubbish being thrown against Islam to discover the true beauty of Islam.
Your wife agreeing to support you shows you were making the right decision? Since when was agreement from one's spouse an effective way of determining reality? If she later supports you in a transition to Buddhism will that then make Buddhism true?
I wonder, have you read 23:5-6 & 70:29-30? Do you realise what those verses are permitting?
Here is my journey to shahadah, it stopped at an earlier point than yours:
@TheRationalizer I wasn't clear on that point. I was going to accept either way I was worried about my wife and how people would attack her because of my decision so I stalled. So when she told me she would support me then I knew it was time to do what I wanted to do.
@TheRationalizer I wasn't clear on that point. I was going to accept either way I was worried about my wife and how people would attack her because of my decision so I stalled. So when she told me she would support me then I knew it was time to do what I wanted to do.
As for the verses, I understand 100% what that means. Do you understand that all verses have a specific context for the time and a general meaning for all time. Slavery was part of society of the time, but not now.
I remember nearly shedding a tear when my wife did the same for me :)
It's not that the verses are talking about slavery that gives me a problem. My problem with them is that they give men permission to use their female slaves for sex. It's bad enough that these females were slaves in the first place, but to say there is "no blame" in using them for sex is a terrible thing. Certainly not "all merciful", I have more mercy than that.
@TheRationalizer You have to look at the culture of the time. Many things were happening that shouldn't have. Killing new born girls, slavery, tribal disputes and retaliations. Rules were introduced slowly. Slavery and the horrible treatment of them was a huge part of the world at that time and continued for a long time after. Look at all the verses about slavery as a whole, how they should be treated, how they should be freed.
This gives you an understanding of Islam in regards to slaves.
I have read them, and this is not about slavery itself. Slavery took a long time to eradicate in Islam, during that period there was "no blame" in men using their slaves for sex.
>Slavery is oppression which should be fought against
So why put these poor females through such a thing for so long by saying there is "no blame" in it?
@TheRationalizer I'll be honest, I am not a scholar and do not know an accurate answer at this point.
I do however know that there is an acceptable answer/reasoning for the context/permissability, just because it isn't apparent to me now, doesn't mean it isn't there. People spend life times of study to truly understand aspects of the Quran and applying its rulings to society (Sharia).
Every verse in the Quran has a reason, we need to study to find it. When I find it I will let you know.
Tell me. If it were in your power to tell everyone what to do, but you thought that the instant abolition of slavery would be detrimental would you at least tell these people to treat their slaves well?
The Quran says that you must feed and clothe them as you would feed and clothe your own family etc.
However, would you also
A: Tell them not to use female slaves for sex, or
B: Tell them it's perfectly fine to do so
Which option is most merciful, and which would you order?
@TheRationalizer [3] This of course does not mean that people will agree 100% with it but again you have to look at the ruling of the verse, why it was implemented (accepted), how it affects the individual as well as how it affects society as a whole.
@TheRationalizer they help follow the conversation for sure. I have to go to work and I will try to answer you latest posts tonight, insha'Allah (God Willing)
@TheRationalizer I agree that "no blame" idea is terrible and Islam teaches us to be accountable for our actions.
One of the things that Allah hates the most and gives us permission to fight against is oppression. Slavery is oppression and should be fought. This is why the Quran and its ayah (signs, proofs, evidences, etc) need to be considered as a whole for the Sharia ruling. Understanding the rules in regards t oppression affects this verse and its ruling.
peace be on you , am happy for you ,thanks for sharing your story with us .
jazak ALLAH al jana for this good work you do .

When we learn of amputations and stonings, we learn about islam.
When we read about sexism and homophobia, we read about islam.

@sirataalmustaqeem
TheRationalizer 1 year ago
@TheRationalizer [2] There are many more things, anyone can argue individual points but without consideration of the whole then of course I see anyone not agreeing about the divine possibilities.

Brother a few words of advise...

As for the verses, I understand 100% what that means. Do you understand that all verses have a specific context for the time and a general meaning for all time. Slavery was part of society of the time, but not now.
sirataalmustaqeem 1 year ago
@sirataalmustaqeem
TheRationalizer 1 year ago
@TheRationalizer You have to look at the culture of the time. Many things were happening that shouldn't have. Killing new born girls, slavery, tribal disputes and retaliations. Rules were introduced slowly. Slavery and the horrible treatment of them was a huge part of the world at that time and continued for a long time after. Look at all the verses about slavery as a whole, how they should be treated, how they should be freed.
This gives you an understanding of Islam in regards to slaves.
sirataalmustaqeem 1 year ago
@sirataalmustaqeem
TheRationalizer 1 year ago
@TheRationalizer I'll be honest, I am not a scholar and do not know an accurate answer at this point.
I do however know that there is an acceptable answer/reasoning for the context/permissability, just because it isn't apparent to me now, doesn't mean it isn't there. People spend life times of study to truly understand aspects of the Quran and applying its rulings to society (Sharia).
Every verse in the Quran has a reason, we need to study to find it. When I find it I will let you know.
sirataalmustaqeem 1 year ago
@sirataalmustaqeem
TheRationalizer 1 year ago
@TheRationalizer [3] This of course does not mean that people will agree 100% with it but again you have to look at the ruling of the verse, why it was implemented (accepted), how it affects the individual as well as how it affects society as a whole.
sirataalmustaqeem 1 year ago
@sirataalmustaqeem
I like the use of [1] [2] [3] on comments, I think I shall use that in future :)
