Populous, Command & Conquer, Dune 2, Red Alert, AOE 2, Dawn of War 40k, Starcraft 1 & 2, Total Annihilation, Civ 2 (simplicity + video advisors ftw), Colonisation, Warcraft 1 2 3, Settlers 1 & 7, Empire Earth, Homeworld, Sins of a Solar Empire, Total war (any, they are all good).

Couldnt list vertically (hence the repost), youtube comments FTL.

@si2foo Thats whats cool in old RTS games. It didnt matter if it was medieval or sci-fi. The gameplay remained quite the same. Different looks, units and story, but the units still worked the same way. Strategy games are always been bold in that part so for me there are only 2 different kind of strategy games: RTS and TBS(turn based). In rpg and shooting genre i would be more specific, but RTS games just are so similar it rly doesnt matter if its medieval, modern or sci-fi, but thats my opinion

I would say Starcraft has sparked the highest level of game play. The micro/macro management in Starcraft is legendary. Warcraft 3 has the most strategy choices. In late Warcraft 3 game controlling three heroes abilities, their items and abilities/movement of all your units is insane. Age of Empires are one of my favorites too. However I find them to be unbalanced and Age of Empires 3 card system is retarded.

Just cause Warcraft 3 is like an RPG-RTS hybrid, doesn't mean it's a bad strategy game. In case you guys didnt know, Blizzard made WoW, warcraft, AND starcraft. I think RTS campaigns are much more fun when they carry a scent of RPG, giving it more story

Anno is awesome. I really enjoyed it but eventually gets a little old, maintaining your city. Also, the combat is very shallow, but again, its a city builder. I would def suggest downloading the torrent but the price tag may or no be worth it.

Apparently you havent played some of its earlier games In Rome Total War and Medieval Total Wars there were over 20 factions if that isnt enough i dont know what is. Plus you said its historically inacurate i know most of it is but Total War Redifined Strategy games with the risk like set up you were able to raise armies, build cities, set sieges, and have huge battles.
