Imo, the keepers should have separated them before they bonded. Elephants are too intelligent and emotional. It is selfish of them to place more importance on the lucrative aspect of this story than consider Tarra's feelings when Bella would pass.
that is one of the most insensitive, asinine comments i've read in some time! didn't you watch the piece? didn't you hear them say they wouldn't accept an offer for the rights to the story. Bella & Tara had been companions for years, so who's to say it couldn't have lasted longer if bella wasn't killed; who could have forseen that occuring?
@KCB30 thing is, death is always there. You cannot protect and cuddle any creature from knowing it exists. If you had a pet that you love die, that is the same idea. You won't regret having loved your pet just because it lives a shorter lifespan than you.
"They have value just for being themselves." God bless the people who run the sanctuary and didn't sell them out to Disney or other companies. RIP Bella.
the ending shot of bella standing underneath tara for shade is precious. what a fantastic friendship. Disney wouldn't do justice to this wonderful story. this was born of a natural progress, not b/c a trainer/filmaker herds them around to suit their greedy purposes.
@runamuck74 you are absolutely right!!!!!! no trainers were needed... it was all natural friendship we could learn something from nature. Disney couldn't do them justice like you said :))
thank you for your kind response. i had actually forgotten the original segment until i came across this update. it's sad to catch up w/this story, but w/the knowledge that bella was gone. not to sound flippant, but this development will test the adage, "an elephant never forgets". thank you again...
I think they could have made that movie if they had the right trainers- Not everyone uses punishment and intimidation! The "Clicker Training" or "Progressive Reinforcement" method lets the animals decide what they do and zero force is involved. It's a method based on mutual respect and trust between animal and human and it has produced remarkable, unbreakable bonds. It truly is a way to communicate with animals and be a team without exploiting or harming them.
How incredibly beautiful. I fully agree with your vision for full animal rights. But in the end I think I would have asked Tara directly if she wanted to be in the movies, explaining to her the pros and cons is she is unaware of them. Sometimes, animals, not unlike humans, can teach humanity as a whole a tremendous amount about such unconditional love by sacrificing immediate comfort in order to educate the masses. I just would have made sure Tara was fully protected. Great video.
@slooash Really, you'd ask the elephant directly as to whether it'd want to be in movies. Seriously, that's what you'd do? How long would you stand there waiting for an answer? You sound really smart.
What happens now that Bella has been killed ? So very sad that that had to happen to her. Poor Tara .............. there must be another stray dog out there to keep her company. I do hope so.
@squirrel1612 Hopefully there is some punishment for tarra since we all know she is the one that killed bella, not the crazy story, unbelievable yarn about packs of vicious coyotes wandering the sanctuary, feeding on animals there.
I just got an email from the Elephant Sanctuary that Bella was attacked and killed by coyotes earlier this week. Evidently, Tarra found her body, picked her up and brought her back to the Asian barn area. The caretakers found blood on Tarra's trunk evidencing that Tarra had moved her body. I am still in such shock, I can't stop crying. Namaste, precious Bella. You brought such joy to Tarra and to us. Janice M
I like the idea of an animated version, so the money could go to take care of these amazing and special animals. I love that they stuck to their values and convictions though! Amazing story!
TAKE THAT DISNEY. Elephants over money who knew? Their answer has made me a fan of their rescue. I do hope however that they do allow a kids picture book that using photos. Elephants need to eat. ALOT.
I love the pure message of this loving relationship and the profound respect of the caregivers. It's getting harder to see the goodness in this world if you stick to the international news . . . better to search out these wonderful stories that are happening at the same time . . . I'll search out the love and the redemption stories myself!
