  • I feel like I'm back in middle school in my favorite teachers class. Thanks for the lesson!

  • I love how u teach xD

  • 10/10 for acting.

  • Thanks for this video...I am really quite slow in freestyle and hoping to increase just a little over the next few months. This was all very useful.

  • "Fill your lungs with water or air, as you choose." The latter is called swimming, the former is known as drowning.

  • @OzzyAmir Of course you are right. . . .

  • speaking of swimming faster: /watch?v=wysJTC8kHw4

  • cute pet land-shark

  • Most have said to rotate no more than 45- 60 degrees on the long axis of the body. Will you not create less surface mass if you fully rotate on your side thus eliminating drag and therefore passing through that tunnel and creating a smaller frontal profile.

  • @giveyouashot When viewed from the front as long as you are streamlined, there is little difference in drag due to the amount of rotation. Rotating too far can take too long, and makes it hard to get back to "flat" before beginning the catch. Also some swimmers develop what we call "hip drop" where the hips sag downward during over rotation of the body. Another problem we see is a very uneven or large kick developed to rotate the body back into line. Hope this helps.

  • this guy is awesome. good tips thanks

  • I have been working on my frontal profile by lying on my side on a towel like you have showed. Is this the same position I should maintain whilst rotating on my long axis as I swim?? I.E. - keeping the arm and shoulder as close to the face a as possible.

  • @giveyouashot

Hi. Yes for the arm and shoulder, but limit the rotation of the body, not to rotate as much as the stretch position but to about 45 degrees maximum

  • the information is good, but the attempts at humor are ....... not so good :-/

  • I'm not a very quick free-styler, I know, but I have recently been able to drop my 28 seconds in a 50 yard free to a 26. The thing is, I want to lose more seconds but I haven't been able to get back to that "one-time" 26. I've been trying to figure out why I gained my seconds back and what I can do to lose them.

  • @CrazyFactory741

It is hard to know without seeing you swim. Try to figure out what is holding you back. Your start, your turn, your streamline position, your kick, or your arm power. Work on your weakest aspect. At your level the biggest gains can be made through small technique changes. If you can see a video of yourself, even taken from above the water, you may find the key to speed for you. Good luck.

  • This is the weirdest video ive ever seen, but the tips were stunning. Some of the stuff where really basic but still blew my mind! This has helped me a ton, thanks.

  • nice hat.

  • 20 people filled their lungs with water.

    2:01

  • I just watched your other new video on swimming with high legs. It was really interesting and really answers questions I had about how to teach swimmers to get those legs up. Thanks.

  • Thank you! I've watched alot of videos about technique and form on here and none of them have talked about arching your back to get your feet up and narrow your drag profile. Good demonstrations. Going to the pool now to try it out.

  • I like this guy! :)

  • you are weird hhhh

  • I filled my lungs with water as suggested and I almost died. Is that normal? What am I doing wrong?

  • awesome video...one of the best out there. I especially like the Technic you suggest on how to keep the leg up.

  • 2:01, what did he just say???

  • This is a great video! psst, ever since I was 12 my mom made me watch swimming vids

  • Good advice

  • I like this guy. He reminds of a cross between scooby1961 and Leslie Nielson XD

  • This Dude Is Weired

  • How could you say this guy has no idea what he's doing. I followed his advice and became instantly faster. :)

  • lol...that guy is joking , he even use a chicken to illustrate instead of himself, how pathetic was that!

  • wtf be a normal person

  • i wanna be your pen pal

  • well to be honest yea its a verybeneficial video with nice tips but, that man, why is he acting so funny??

  • Lo que cuenta es cierto, pero es un maldito payaso.

  • YOU NO.. FOR ALL OF YOU OUT THERE THAT HAS GOOD SPEED.....DONT STOP SWIMMING KEP IT UP.....I MOVED TO A DIFFERNET STATE FOR A YEAR AND STOPED SWIMMING.....LOST ALL WHAT I GAINED NOW MY RECORED SUCKS..BUT IM TRANING HARD NOW TO GET THE BEST RECORD AND TRYING TO BE ON THE OLYMPICS.......EMMERICK BULATAO)

  • THIS GUY IS SUPERB! You can only be this goofy if you are totally confident in your abilities. Very impressive.

  • 16 people, well... dont know how 2 swim

  • I've never been so amused while improving my swimming xD

  • Some say kick using the knees because not doing it takes a lot of energy, while other say don't kick using the knees because it causes a lot of drag. Who is right and who is wrong? :) Thanks!

  • @euheide Generally speaking you don't want to bend the knees much. The power for the kick should come from the largest muscles from the hips and core. If you flex at the knees too much you create more drag by going beyond the slipstream of the body. The knees will bend naturally when kicking but keep it to a minimum. Watch a video called "Free style kicking" by Leading Swim School. Hope this helps.

  • @phoca99 Thank you very much!! :)

  • very funny and very useful! :) Great video! Thanks!

  • nice hat :P

  • This gut is badass.

  • 4:22 lol a monkey

  • do you have to raise ur elbow when your doing freestyle? does it make a difference and is it necessary?

  • @MrToad321 Complex question. You need to engage your forearm in pulling water as early in the stroke as possible, rather than sweeping downward with your whole arm. Keeping the elbow near the surface while the forearm engages water on the start of the stroke is the best way to maximize the surface area you are pulling with. Watch this video "Go Swim Freestyle with Kara Lynn Joyce" and "How to swim with a High Elbow Catch/EVF Early Vertical Forearm" Hope this helps.

  • @BBrown91878 So you are a salesman? Buy an ad.

  • Fill your lungs with water or air, whichever I choose??

  • holy molly this guy is a bad ass

  • BILL NYE THE SWIMMING AND SCIENCE GUY

  • Hey! I tried this and the first time, I thought, OMG, I can't do it! I was exhausted! The next time, I did better, and today, I took ten minutes off my mile!! Thank you!!

  • Good advice and all the key principles are well described. Those who are new to swimming think that it's a matter of strength and nothing is more wrong. Work on your position, your balance. Best way to learn; Total Immersion book. It works, gives you all the drills to practice to reach what's shown in this video.

  • This dudes a trip.. good tips!

  • This video's fucking brilliant!

  • 5:32 That's me!!

  • whats with the hat

  • so you shouldn't breath?! wth?!

  • @SVKmellow Not sure I know what you mean. Of course you need to breathe.

  • @jshaules Yes, but I was searching for a way to breath without increasing drag drastically (I have a feeling that is what happens to me) and I waited the whole video to see someone do it... and either they are so stealthy at it that I don't even see it or there just wasn't a good shot of someone breathing while swimming.

  • @SVKmellow A good way to breathe, that I use to teach my new swim friends, is to cock your head a bit while breathing, keeping your head down, but bringing your chin out of the water. I swim a 23.62 in my 50 and I'm a Sophmore. Give it a try, if it works for you, use it.

  • @SVKmellow Okay. I see your point. This video was just about reduction of drag. We tried to keep the focus on the basics. Breathing does throw a lot of swimmers out of line. We can recommend the video by SWIMTHERAPY called "Freestyle Breathing." I think you wil get a lot out of that one. Other than that, you might try to time your breathing by following your hand as it finishes the stroke, rotating your mouth to break the surface as your hand comes out of the water. Hope that helps.

  • @SVKmellow YA YOU SHOULDN'T

THAT'S HOW YOU IDK SWIM FASTER?

  • @SVKmellow I think they were addressing the fact that breathing incorrectly causes more drag. when breathing correctly you should rotate your head tucking your inside ear to your extended arm creating that streamline position as your pulling arm exits the water, as your arm then enters the water again you then rotate your head back to it original position. You shouldn't lift your head up out of the water to breathe it should just be natural as your doing your stroke.

  • Nice Hat.

  • Very effective way of teaching, if only a lot of people present like him.....less snoozing in the audience.

  • Very informative, and humorous, thank you for sharing!

  • the question is which hat has the least drag?

  • @delkhairio If we could just get a motor on the propeller, and remove the bill....

  • this guy is such a crackhead

  • Wow.That was coolest video. Thanks for sharing it.

  • cool vid!! nice work dude...!

  • 'pointing out how torque from a wide arm recovery causes drag'.

Good point. How many times do you have heart attacks sharing a narrow lane with these 'grim reaper' swimmers using wide arm recovery? No one else seems to mention it. Imagine you are swimming in a tube.

  • excellent video. good fun. Best way to reduce drag is to imagine you are swimming in a tube. Anyway, this is one of the best vids on here.

  • The best way to learn is to have fun while doing it.

    Great vid :D

  • this is a great video. wonderful production, and professional, correct, and appropriate tips. well done!

  • The hats and whackness in this video made it lock into my memory, great tips in this video too.

  • Wear funny hat and swim faster, thanks got it :D

  • @koekjeeee lol, that cracked me up.

  • Thanks, that was good. Now I'll try to put that into practice.

  • swimming science is fun! :)

  • Very informative and entertaining at the same time. Presented very logically. Thank yOU!!! Will be looking forward to hopefully more posts from you!

  • thumbs up if you ever had one of these wacky science teachers who made science your favorite class

  • This is one of the best swimming technique videos I've seen on Youtube (better even than most of the swimsmooth material, which is great). Because he really knows what he's talking about. He knows the theory and has good illustrative video clips, and makes practical recommendations. Useful points about tilting pelvis/arching back, shoulder flexibility, and pointing out how torque from a wide arm recovery causes drag. Great stuff.

  • @josephjiplace lol i totally agree with you,im learning how to swim but along the way it helps to seek other advice to make you/me a better swimmer!

tho this guy is a totally doosh bag with his silly props..BUT....it by far has made me more keen then ever to get in the pool again tommorow night and try these tips...he's an idiot stillhowever!..funny shit!

  • lol

  • Your videos are informative, interesting and funny. I loved it. :)

  • Excellent use of humor to keep the students attention. Very fun to watch.

    BTW: You're NUTTY buddy!!!!!

With that being said..... EXCELLENT INFORMATION!!!!

  • If Carlesberg made swim videos...

  • Very concise and relevant! Great one.

  • nice video.

  • great video, thx so much!

Is there a good channel to view good tutorials for beginning swimmers?

  • @Vivalavidapool There are so many videos it is hard to find anything very helpful. That is why we made this video. We are currently making one with the step by step lessons we generally use with our clients, which are mostly triathletes. You might look at the Swimtherapy videos from the UK, and the Total Immersion videos are somewhat instructive and an okay place to start, though not really technically the best.

  • swimming would help you grow taller ?

  • @TheLeilisa Height is a product of genetics and good nutrition. Herbs, stretching, exercise, and magic do nothing.

  • @phoca99 thank you buddy, i have been taking" helpo grow taller" i grew 2 inches and i will play basketball to add more inches to my height

  • thanks ! very informative.

  • lmao!! i learned so much

  • he replaced something he said at 5:42 with ''girls and boys''

can't guess what he's really saying though..

  • "fill you lungs with water or air as you choose" hahah

    great outfit by the way

  • This is the bestest, coolest, killerest swimming vid... Mister - you are forever in my heart :D

  • very good video . love it

  • thank You! really helps.

  • haha this guy is so cool

  • Thank you for your earlier response.

    1) what is the purpose of high elbow recovery. I do not understand it. My understanding is when you take the hand out of the water keep it as close as possible to the body before entering. I have heard of many different drills on this but I do not get what I am trying to accomplish here.

    2) Do I keep my head in line with my body. IE do I keep it straight facing down or do I turn my face in line with my body at 45 as I rotate when I am swimming. Than you.

  • @giveyouashot 1.The point of "high elbow recovery" is to keep in line with the body and direction of travel. This prevents swinging the arm wide, as shown in the video, causing torque of the body.

    2. Some coaches want you to look down unless breathing. We think relaxation is more important, as long as the head remains on the axis of rotation and the body isn't over-rotating. Sprinters tend to look forward more and don't rotate the head much. Distance swimmers are more relaxed.

  • thx that made swim practice and meets better!

  • all that water at 0:52 to 0:59 Xooo

  • The intro was necessary, as a matter of fact.

  • thanks. this video helped a lot

  • Thanks!!!!!

  • I can't do the exercise at 2:02 because I sink on full lungs of air. I also swim low down in the water and that give a lot of extra drag too, so I don't know what else to do. My body is aligned and my rotations are good, just that my swim cap just breaches the water - unlike the fast swimmers who have the water line almost at their eyebrows.

    Any suggestions ?

  • @marcusjack We think you can experience the lifted legs position by trying to push off from the wall in the streamlined position with your head down, back arched a little, use your glutes to lift the legs. Don't take any strokes at first, just glide out. As long as your legs are in line with your body the drag will be reduced, no matter how deep you are. Repeat until you get that feeling of balance and the legs are high. Then push off, try just a few strokes, no breaths. Keep the legs high.

  • @phoca99 Thank you !! I'll give it a try !

  • I found this video really really helpful. I've sent the link for it to 4 of my friends at this stage, whenever they ask for advice on swimming.

  • What kind of camera should i used to film myself under water?

  • @StashBurners We use a Flip video camera with a waterproof housing.

  • @phoca99 Thanks

  • Awsome hats man!!! XD Very nice video aswell

  • good stuff learnt alot

  • Very funny! love the Viking head considering I am from MN.

  • Very funny!

  • Can you please expand on the tilting of the pelvis. I swim with my stomach pulled in(squeezing my stomach muscles) . My hips pull in but my lower back is not arched. It is not possible to arch the lower back in this position. Am I doing it wrong? Any help much appreciated.

  • @giveyouashot It sounds as if you are on the wrong track. Try pushing off from the wall in the glide position, hands extended over head, streamlined. Just glide out from the wall without stroking. If you feel out of balance or you feel your legs dragging downward, this needs to be fixed. Try the floating drill shown in the video, lifting your legs just using your back and butt muscles. Practice both the push off and float until it gets easier. The stomach doesn't need to be contracted.

  • @giveyouashot just reading these comments and want to throw my two cents in...

small tummy suck in and using your hips while swimming is the rec'm'ded advice from this coach...

swim from the body with a tight core, using it all...

  • Wow! What a crazy video; however, the ideas conveyed are very, very ligitimate. The arched back really helps and the underwater video is very revealing. Thanks for the post.

Can you tell us the type of camera being used? Thanks!!

  • @1cleandude We find these tips to really work with most of our athletes. We see so many fit people just struggle with swimming. Working harder is not always the best way to get faster.

It is a Flip video camera with a water proof housing.

  • What we mean by "push through drop shoulder" is that in or order to maintain a streamlined position while swimming (and not pushing off) you want to make sure that the shoulder of the arm that is in the stroke cycle pushes through all the way towards the hip. If you don't push through all the way, you barge through the water with your shoulders. The still image of this particular video shows the reach of the shoulder with the shoulder of the stroking or trailing arm lowered towards the hip.

  • Translation of @swimkona2010 comments:

I met (the two video producers) James and his brother Dale giving lessons in Kona (at the Ironman) and what is shown here in the video they taught me in a very short time, two one-hour lessons. I was able to gain balance and relaxation and clearly increase my efficiency in water without many technical exercises. I was clearly able to swim fast and relaxed with a more streamlined and better leg position in the water, . . . . .

  • Continued translation of @swimkona2010 comments:

. . . . and what was even better was that I was able to start very fast on the bike because I had protected and taken care of my legs!

The brothers are someone who understands swimming and, even better, they can also pass on their understanding to others. Great! Thanks very much.

  • what do you mean "push through drop shoulder"? Like when you push off, one shoulder goes down, and the stroking shoulder goes up?

  • Your tip about tilting the pelvis so your legs rise was exactly what I was looking for. I've been swimming all my life and had no idea my form was so incorrect as to be creating MORE work . I've been in two days of college swim conditioning and have learned so much already that I've been practicing in my free time trying to get the rhythm of the movements down. Today I practiced my rolls and breathing, which was still not working, I figured it was my legs being low.

  • @chandramarie A tip for your breathing: Try to follow your hand as it goes through the power stroke with your nose, so as your hand exits the water at the back, you are more or less looking back to that side, and your mouth should break the surface to get air at the same time. That may help with the timing of your breathing. But try not to start the next pull until you have finished getting air and your recovering arm is nearly halfway forward, & shoulders begin to roll back toward level.

  • @phoca99 yes, that's good for me, thanks.

  • Awesome Hat! Anyway thanks for the tips.

  • Great video!! Informative and entertaining.

  • I use this video a reference point and come back to it several times a month. He also takes the time to actually respond to my questions. Very appreciative of his time.

  • your funny,,, but your tips are very helpful!!

  • lol nice hats lol i like your vids

  • I like those little hats and toys your wearing.

  • awsome vid!!! with awsome sense of humor lol

  • Great video... Great Job!

  • you teach well but u are kinda weird since u are wearing weird clothing

  • Awsum advice, funny too ;-)

  • He said fill your lungs with water, or air, LOL 2:06

  • I just look for a video to improve my freestyle and I find that your by the sports center :) What a coincidence

  • thx i need this to make it to zones

  • very educational. Good stuff.

  • very weird...LOL.. but very informative.. this video really helped me with my swim..

  • More videos Mr Haules :)!

  • Outfits are corny indeed, with that said, thank you for the vid. Very informative. I am with scrumpyman. Thought I was good, did spur of the moment triathlon and found out how wrong I was. I will definitely apply the techniques moving forward.

  • what's with the weird outfits?

  • Fantastic!! I will apply the techniques later on today. Thanks for posting!!

  • I always thought that I was a strong swimmer with little endurance but with lots of speed and a good technique. Man, how wrong I was! Watching these and other videos, I realise that every single aspect of my stroke sucks. There's so much to fix that I don't even know where to begin.

  • @scrumpymanjack I suggest you start with body position. Try to do the float drill bringing your feet to the surface. That is the most important issue. Next, think about not fighting the water, but slipping through it. Most non-swimmer triathletes seem to think working harder is the way to gain speed. Watch some good swimmers, see how easy it looks. Try for that.

  • @phoca99 I will. Many thanks for the advice.

  • This video is very informative and entertaining. Thank you for taking the time to make it as well as uploading it.

  • very helpful! thank you!!

  • Great tips and video analysis! Thankyou!!!
