So where are they now? Dr. Matthew Stanfield featured in the "A Meaningful Life" in the seventh series of Trauma: Life in the E.R. is now a Neurosurgeon in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. His webite is stanfieldmd(dot)com
I was in that episode my name is Emilio Ryan Acosta I was the little boy that was hit by a car while playing outside my house, can you please post my little section on YouTube?
@chrissline77 i think u need an enema bcuz you're full of it-she's fine and now lives in Phoenix and is well
as a doctor-my guess. University Hospital in San Antonio is building a new tower and ER. I think that Trauma Director Ronald Stewart and the nurse Peggy Spriggs are still there. It seems chaotic, but they know what they're doing.
@chrissline77 You said this RN was your neighbor and died in 3yrs of ("phenomena", no less!)... eehhmmm... at least look up the virus' rate of progression post exposure... treatment after exposure is mandatory, aggressive and highly effective. I she was my colleague I would not post her health status (or anyone's ) without their consent.
Truly the Best show ever! You feel the adrénaline n how precious teamwork is and how much goodness, determination and humanity reside in nurses, doctors, ancillary staff. Wish the whole programs would be available on Canada and new episodes made! I am praying it starts over again, great teaching tool! God bless the staff, patients and families !
They still have some decade old episodes of this show(originally on TLC-The Learning Channel) but now on it's sister network-The Discovery Health Channel- which is about to become the OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). They should shoot some new episodes-it's more realistic than ER.
It's now illegal in the US to take video of someone admitted to the hospital for emergency treatment without their written consent... which won't happen.
@crazysoccerman14 very interesting i didn't know that. It's a shame that nowadays legalities interfere with medicine and entertainment. Well, I guess we still have "Grey's Anatomy" (fiction). This show was well produced as well as the similar "Critical Hour." I always wonder why they blur some people's faces on these shows.
i remember when this specific show aired for the first time on tv. me and my mother were watching it in 1999 together. back then we lived in nebraska i was 8 my mother who barely began college said to herself that she was going to work at that hospital on the show cuz we were moving to San antonio Tx soon(but i didnt know it). never woulda guessed exactly a decade later my mom became a RN working ER on this show. now i wanna be a doctor graduated from UTHSC working same ER as mom did on this sho
@CalamityBentriniti YES IT CAN! my grandmother is an RN (Registered Nurse), and i grew up around the hospital and when your in the ER you have to move fast! and i even asked her about it and she said you can! it DOES NOT MATTER IF IT JUST "ONE LITTLE PRICK" OR IF IT (the needle or any other sharp object that has blood on it) STICKS ALL THE WAY IN YOU CAN STILL GET SOMETHING!!
@CalamityBentriniti i did not hear you say that your mom was a CNA! and i wasn't giving any advice. i was saying that you have to move fast in the ER and things happen. and her hands were practically on that mans head so that little prick could have gave her something!! it only takes ONE TIME to get PRICKED, POKED, or STUCK! if its on there than there is a chance you can get something! it could be AIDS, HEP, OR ANYTHING!
@TheGenlee01 My mother, a Certified Nursing Assistant works hard. And judging by my observations, My mother works at Cedars in Los Angeles, Registerd Nurses don't do shit. They fluff pillows. C.N.A's are over worked and under paid. Do your research first before you go all out guns'a'blazin. Thanks. :)
@TheGenlee01 ITS THE OTHER AWAY AROUND! CNA's ARE THE ONES THAT "FLUFF PILLOWS" CNA 's ARE THE ONES THAT DON'T SHIT!!! CNA's ARE JUST AT THE HOSPITAL FOR THE PATIENT'S COMFORT AND AID!! SUCH AS GIVING BED BATHS, CARRY/CHANGING BED PANS, AND THE ONLY THING THAT COMES CLOSE TO NURSING IS TAKING VITALS!!! HOW LONG DOES A CNA HAVE TO GO TO "TRAINING" COMPARED TO HOW LONG A RN HAS TO GO TO COLLEGE!!! NOW YOU TELL ME WHO IS THE ONE THAT DOES NOT DO SHIT!
@TheGenlee01 hey I am CNA, we do much more than fluff pillows and change bed pads. We know our patients, we are the first ones to know if something is wrong with one of our patients. We do all of the physical tasked involved in caring for a person. Our training is minimal but our role is important. We are the nurse's eyes and ears. Not merely comforted for patients.
@biancalhoover Very very true! Just to share a personal experience I had with one if you don't mind: 6 years ago my mom became very ill(I was 14 at the time) One day my mom was being seen by her Attending Physician on the regular MED-SURG floor, and from what the doc said she was recovering well. Next day, she had a seizure and ended up in CICU, where five days later she died in the CICU. CNA, RN, Trauma Surgeon and other Physicians gave it a great attempt to save her. Thanks for what you do!
I remember watching this! after the lady got stabbed with the needle, a doctor went and asked the guy who she was attending, if he's been with "putas", which means whores. lolol. since the guy was hispanic, and didn't speak english.
@lilmama259 how unprofessional to cry though, especially during a trauma. we've all dodged bullets but she won't do well in medicine if she's so sensitive!
What a nightmare.. and No she didn't step on a needle hence she was washing her hand.. and YES you can get infected from one needle stick... its nerve racking
She was fine in the end. She did the regular procedure of having tests to see if she contracted anything. Thankfully, she did not. (I worked on this episode as the assistant editor/PA.) Hi Roger and Jonathan! It was a great learning experience.
@WolfPirncess101 unless you got your blood transfuse or you're immunocompromised, a little prick from a needle won't get you infected. There are conditions for a virus to survive also it doesn't do well outside the body.
@HannahTheBrave No, she and the patient turned out to be ok. But when she poked herself the patient was unconscious so they wouldn't know if he had aids or something. That's what they were afraid of
@bigdaddyquey yes, it can. Depending on internal and external factors. There is something called "port of entry" and "port of exit" depending where the break in the skin is, how big, and where at, it could very well, make you infected.
HIV is the least of your worries, really the risk of contracting HIV is small. What is of concern is Hepatitis; much easier to contract and can kill you just as easy as HIV can.
I like how people are saying she could catch HIV or AIDS. You can't catch AIDS, it's a state of having an ineffective immune system most commonly caused by HIV. But you could have your bone marrow radiated (such as before a transplant) and still call it AIDS. It's like saying she'll get late stage syphilis...no, she'll just get syphilis. Oh and Hep B and C are viruses, not bacteria.
wash your hand/disinfect the area as soon as possible. here at my fire house we have a a bunch of pills and liquids take we"ll take for a whole month that will make you throw up, have diarrhea, have fever, night sweats etc.. but it decreases your changes of infection.
Hey, medical student here, first you wash the wound like she did. Then you report it to a safety officer (usually an RN) and they run a bunch of tests on the patient and check their medical history. If the patient has anything infectious, then they inform you of it and treat you. Normally the hospital you work for covers the cost.
wow im confused... So this lady was in a car accident, decided to buy an ab machine, and then her appendix exploded? And why was the chick freaking out at the end? It is not like that guy automatically has aids just because she accidently got his blood in her.
It's not just HIV she could contract. Needle sticks are very dangerous, as well as HIV, she could get Hepatitis B or C and many other dangerous bacteria. Needle stick are far too common and while that person may not have AIDS the risk for disease transmission is still very high. Think about it, if you were even possibly exposed to HIV, wouldn't you freak out?
That's very true. And yes I probably would freak out but I just wouldn't show it. That is just my personality though. So that is pretty common though? Needle sticks?
Sadly yes, It estimated to happen to about 1/3 of the nursing staff at a large hospital. I've had a needle stick before, but it was just before the needle was used so i was OK, but it was a waste of drugs. They happen a lot in trauma situations because things are moving so fast and, well accidents happen.
she had poked herself with the needle that she was using to sow up that guys head. she was freaking out because you can get a lot of diseases from doing that, like HIV, or AIDS.
