I love this song. R.I.P. to Miss Gladys Horton, who passed away Wednesday Night (1/26/11) in Sherman Oaks, California, while recovering from a stroke.
I think xunclexx is on to something...Motown SHOULD take the hit for arresting the development of The Marvelettes. Case in point...sometime back around 1969?...I talked a buddy, Jumpin' Joe, to come go with me and check out this little Union Avenue bar called the CLUB CHARM in Paterson, NJ. The joint was nary half full and...we were seated not fifteen feet away from these gals, DANG! My bud was like, ho-hum...but I was like in heaven! Man, I told him, these are THE MARVELETTES & they're DIVINE!
From what I remember from 1966, Motown Master, Smokey wanted to help The Marvelettes make the leap to a more "adult" theme (as reflected in this song ) in their future recordings but the Motowns quality control was resistant to this idea. Robinsons premise was "all the other groups were maturing into adults". This song was released but the powers that be didnt want to see the Marvelettes do anything in an adult venue (another nail in the Marvelettes coffin). (More)
It makes my blood boil to know the girls could have gone much further had "certain" individuals used a little foresight. In other words, "MOTOWN DID NOT WANT THE MARVELLETES TO GROW UP".
i really likke this cause it is smooth and easy to dance to and you had a lot of fun in those days at the malt shop and it is fun you can't find a malt shop in the atl
Another great one written by Smokey Robinson, that lyrical genius. He was at the pinnacle of his career. This music perfectly describes the times that it was written. The sixties thru the seventies were the best music period in history. Period! The seventies were the best.
"CrisVangel" did put a video up of the same song that has the Tamla "bars" design, but this copy had the Tamla globes, this one is ultra rare and it was a polystyrene 45. These rare copies of the song with the Tamla globes are so hard to find.
@MagcialWorldOfMusic : Roadhouse Oldies in Silver Spring Maryland have a lot of these old songs - even in vinyl. They do mail order if you are interested. Just google them !
Thanks a lot. I didn't even know they were using synthisizers back then. It sounds like Stevie in some ways but when i really listen, there is a difference in style and now I realize it doesn't really sound that much like a harmonica. I learned something today! Bless you and good day.
"Secretly I been trailin' you, like a fox that preys on a rabbit........ I had to get you and so I knew - I had to learn your ways and habits...." One of the grooviest sounds of the 60s. Good song to Bop to as well. Superior.....listen to the harmonica. That could be Stevie Wonder. He used to play on many of Motowns recordings.
@MotownMaster Synthesizers used to show up in odd places in the 60s. There were the real "gimmicky" uses, like in "That Greasy Kids' Stuff" to more subtle things like in "In and Out of Love" and "Forever Came Today" by the Supremes, or "Good Morning Girl" by Neon Philharmonic.
wasn't around when Motown was THE record company of the day. but thanks to my tios who used to work on their rides all the time with nuttin' but this music playing, got to know and LUV it all. this song especially ~ sittin' as a kid playing all the old 45's. man! good times.
GREAT TUNE - I used to have the same copy, with the globes - of course, the story goes that when TAMLA and GORDY changed their label designs in late 1966, they still had a lot of the old label designs in some of their pressing plants - TAMLA with the globes label, and GORDY with the script label - so, if you happen to have a TAMLA or GORDY single with the older label imprint, it could be valuable!!!
This was and IS an awesome Marvelettes tune. They're my absolute favorite Motown 'girl' group. I love that the flip side of many of their hit tunes on my old '45's were just as good as the hit. Still have them all. Thanks for the post!!!!
amazing record. i love both sides of the marvelettes - they were one group with gladys on lead in the early days, then they completely changed when wanda took over. one thing stayed the same tho - the quality of their recordings. i'm glad they held out and did 'too many fish' rather than 'where did our love go'. more people should know bout this group - great to see their name up there on the corny collins show in 'Hairspray'. Recognition at last!
That song was also appeared on "A Collection of 16 Original Big Hits - Vol. 7" LP on Motown 661. One of many Motown compilation LP's ever from 1967. I had the LP, but I sold it.
This is my absolute favorite Marvelettes record! I don't know if it's the Anthology album or what. But, I have heard an unedited version through the years which contains another whole verse of song. I'm sure it was edited because it probably went over the 3 minute mark. If you have that version, could you post it? Thanks for sharing your awesome collection of Motown.
who did the uptempo cover of this track?

Beautiful ! the lyrics are insane ! I know that one from Batman Forever, but the fact it is from 67 makes it even more off beat !
