I hope the Dutch don't do what my home state of California did in the 1980s, which was to eviscerate public arts education in the name of freeing the taxpayers from their burden. Sorry, but paying taxes should be viewed as a higher responsibility and even a privilege. Civilization does not come for free. It has to be constantly earned and renewed. And arts education should be mandatory and not elective. We are only one generation from barbarity.

Everything of value is defenceless!

At the moment the Netherlands are stuck with a right-wing government, with only one seat majority in parliament, condoned by an even worse radical right populist movement which is driven by vindictiveness against everything that they do not understand. The arts are 'intellectual' and, I am not making this up, a 'left-wing hobby' and therefore have to be demolished.

We have voted them in parliament, let's vote them out the next time!

An Orchestra doesn't play notes on the page. Our music is 100% live, and is all about what musicality, style, method and interpretation we (who have previously been given to) pass on to our younger colleagues. Cut that out for a few years, the older generation leaves, and what do you have? A great unbridgeable gap. An abyss. Notes on a page.
