The M14 is considered a battle rifle. You can hit dinner plates @ 200 yards plus. Putting optics on a M14 is tricky. Getting clearance from the armorer and also putting together a ballistics sheet is just some of the things youd have to do with a scoped rifle. any rifle can be used as a sniper rifle. it is not the gun it is person behind the gun that makes it a sniper, not because it has a scope or a bipod. hell if you are good enough you can use a .22, you just have to do all head shots. look at the vietnam they were useing aks with iron sights, and any gun person knows that over 150 yards you have to be really good to it the target. or use other ablities any sniper should have and get close enough for a good shot

The 5.56 looses almost all of its take down force after a few hundred meters as previously mentioned. The 308/7.62 NATO has long been the caliber of choice for military snipers, after out performing the 30 -06 in almost every test.

He's saying the 5.56 has a better ballistic coefficient than M118LR because the 5.56 is the only centerfire rifle cartridge he can fire without flinching, so obviously the, let's say Mk 262 whose BC doesn't surpass .372 is better than the M118LR, which is .485 at 500+ yards. I would assume they are deploying the M14/M1A rather than the M16 due to the difference in kinetic energy and stopping power. The M14 fires the 7.62mm/308 Win round and the M16 is using the 5.56/223 Remington. After a few hundred meters the 5.56 is without a lot of stopping power which is retained by the 7.62 out to a much greater distance.

The M14 is considered a battle rifle. You can hit dinner plates @ 200 yards plus. Putting optics on a M14 is tricky. Getting clearance from the armorer and also putting together a ballistics sheet is just some of the things youd have to do with a scoped rifle. Its not just "throw on a Leaupold MK3 scope and shoot noobz"

any rifle can be used as a sniper rifle. it is not the gun it is person behind the gun that makes it a sniper, not because it has a scope or a bipod. hell if you are good enough you can use a .22, you just have to do all head shots. look at the vietnam they were useing aks with iron sights, and any gun person knows that over 150 yards you have to be really good to it the target. or use other ablities any sniper should have and get close enough for a good shot

The 5.56 looses almost all of its take down force after a few hundred meters as previously mentioned. The 308/7.62 NATO has long been the caliber of choice for military snipers, after out performing the 30 -06 in almost every test.

I would assume they are deploying the M14/M1A rather than the M16 due to the difference in kinetic energy and stopping power. The M14 fires the 7.62mm/308 Win round and the M16 is using the 5.56/223 Remington. After a few hundred meters the 5.56 is without a lot of stopping power which is retained by the 7.62 out to a much greater distance.

uh huh... too bad the math that goes into sniping is used universally. It's what keeps snipers alive. Knowing your weapon, your ammo, being able to judge distances, drop and wind IS part of being a sniper.
you have if you're lucky less than 20 seconds when your target is safe to fire on. A few mistakes and you'd kill hostages, give away your position and get fired upon. No mistakes. If YOU were sniping, you'd probably die.
