Tesla was a key figure in the development of alternating-current electricity, but not the only one. The AC we have today is due to many engineers before, after and contemporary to Tesla. And the fact that the AC approach won out doesn’t subtract from the Edison legacy (+10^3 patents).

@AntonBowie 3 phase AC predates Tesla's work on it. John Hopkinson was an important engineer/inventor for that. Faraday produced AC in ~1830. Oersted is another key figure. AC didn't come from Tesla. Duchenne thought of it long before Mr T was around. So called Tesla coils date back before Tesla was born. Callan & Rumhkoff are key figures for that. The former produced 600 kV discharges in 1837 (20 years before Tesla was born). Also check out E Thomson’s work on the field prior to Tesla.

Edison was a genious. Well, he did not invent the light-bulb, rather than to make it work practichal, so to find the right materials was a challenge. The earlier bulbs lighted only a minute or so, but Edisons first lighted for 49 hours the first time, before he improved it! The light-bulbs of today I think must be made with a "certain" lifetime! A bulb that was lighted at a firestation in USA, the year 1900 or so, lighted for 100 years, (maybe still?)

He also took the credit for anything his workers made (mostly improvements on other people's inventions)while in his employ and therefore owns the patents. All he cared about was money.
